Faithful to the original, everything is basically the same bar some changes in the form of an additional tutorial, much improved lighting and effects, which are more than welcome. You can buy a badge early that allows you to enable the old music and effects "Nostalgia Badge". The only criticism is that you're working with 30fps rather than 50/60fps that we got on the GameCube versions, Europe and America respectively. It takes a good 10-15m to adjust to the new framerate, however once you do, the game is well worth your time.

Having recently revisited Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, I am reminded why this game is considered one of the best in the RPG genre (similarly to Mario RPG - if you haven’t played you need to buy this as well). Here’s my detailed review for Paper Mario though:

      What I Like:
      - Engaging Storyline: The game features a charming and captivating storyline that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The quest to uncover the secrets of the Thousand-Year Door is filled with humor, twists, and memorable characters.
      - Unique Visual Style: The paper-themed art style is both unique and visually appealing. The blend of 2D characters in a 3D world creates a whimsical and immersive experience.
      - Turn-Based Combat: The turn-based combat system is both strategic and fun. The action commands add a layer of interactivity that keeps battles engaging and rewarding.
      - Character Development: Mario is ed by a variety of interesting companions, each with their own abilities and backstories. The interactions and development of these characters add depth to the gameplay.
      - Puzzles and Exploration: The game balances combat with exploration and puzzle-solving. The paper mechanics, like turning into a plane or boat, are cleverly integrated into the puzzles and world navigation.
      - Humor and Writing: The witty writing and humorous dialogue are standout features. The game doesn’t take itself too seriously, making it enjoyable for players of all ages.

      What I Dislike:
      - Backtracking: There are moments in the game where backtracking is required, which can sometimes feel repetitive. However, this is a minor gripe considering the overall quality of the game.
      - Difficulty Spikes: Some battles and puzzles can be unexpectedly challenging. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it can be frustrating for less experienced players.

      Value for Money:
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door offers tremendous value for money. Its lengthy campaign, engaging gameplay, and replayability ensure you get hours of entertainment. Despite being an older title, it holds up remarkably well and is a must-have for any RPG fan.

      Conclusion:
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a timeless classic that excels in storytelling, gameplay, and visual design. Its unique charm and engaging mechanics make it a standout title in the RPG genre. Despite minor issues with backtracking and occasional difficulty spikes, the game’s overall experience is nothing short of fantastic.

As someone who played the original ttyd since the day I got my GameCube back in 2006/2007 and falling in pure love with it. The day this was announced I fell in love with it and was hyped up.

20 years almost later and it STILL holds up as my favorite Paper Mario game. The story is still as funny, engaging and heartfelt as before and battle system still a joy to play through.

The new coat of paint of the visuals just takes a already beautiful game and just makes it even more so with its sharp textures and drop dead gorgeous lighting.

Even if you played the original 2004 version or this your first time visiting the world of rouge port, this is a title you HAVE to add to your collection and experience.

      If I could I'd give this game 6 stars or a 11/10.

Awesome graphics especially on OLED. Great game, one of the best on Gamecube and remastered visuals are amazing, but some of the things they make you do are really annoying and a product of the time. Like having to fight 20 battles with painful repetitive cutscenes between each fight when you're in the arena. Or fetchquests, god forbid.

I played this back on gamecube and have missed playing this. I was delighted to see they were doing this remaster. The game itself is from in my opinion the best spin off of the mario series to date. It keeps you hooked for a long time. With great characters and story and puzzle solving. I love how I can now take this with me wherever I go. Something I couldn't do with the previous version. The remaster is good and crisp. They've done a great job.

The game is a very well done remake. It upholds the original very faithfully while enhancing it in the visual department with beautiful lighting and adding quality of life features that even allow returning players for a fresh playthrough.

Ordered this on a whim as I've never been a huge fan of the Mario franchise and the last one I played was Mario 3D (I'm that old), however this game is freaking great! From the graphics to the story and even the turn based battles as I've heard a lot of people don't. If you love the traditional style Mario games be aware that this is completely different but I think its still amazing!

      ! SPOILERS !
A really awesome remake for the original game, I love how many little things were added and changed.
There's a lot of things I personally noticed just during my gameplay, and I'm nearly headed to the moon at the time of writing this.
Just to name a few changes:
-Easy access to creepy steeple now via a pipe in town
-Prince mush is now a new boss you can fight, quite challenging as well. Including the little Whacka, which is now a boss after you go back to the 100 trials when you beat it. That is so cool to me, excited to properly fight them.
-More coins, even coins after boss battles, and even more coin space than before, I'm past 2k at the moment.
-Easier selling, storing and sorting. Especially giving items to NPCs, you no longer have to read the same NPC message 50 times after you give them something, like the underwear mission in glitzpit. You can just hand them all off to Jolene rapidly.
-Pipe room is now all one spot vs the walkways and lack of names they had before. A lot nicer and convenient.
-Revamped and better soundtrack for almost every area. New SFs and sounds for voicelines of characters! Only soundtrack I hated was glitzpit. I don't understand why they tried to play so much into the culture of the place. I always found the place more of a fun-fair/carnival kind of vibe, really threw off my favorite chapter for me lol
-New cutscenes and fixed typos/lines, and new interactions.
-There's this new karate lady that also helps you practice everything and gives you tips, it's super awesome if you were a new player or want to practice moves without battling.
-More hints, you can access goombella anytime to ask for help without switching partners.
-Quick wheel for changing partners. Thank god, I hated having to constantly go into my inventory for swapping.
-Enemies don't immediately charge you or tail you constantly like the piranha plant did. Piranha plant bites once then goes back to its spot. It's really nice that the enemies don't follow you the whole time, I always got stuck in fights because of that, that I didn't want to fight.
-No death room of turtle enemies in creepy steeple when you jump down a bounce pad. Gosh, I hated that room so much, thank you.
-You can now choose if you want to ride the excess express all the way to riverside or just to rogueport immediately, instead of having to ride the whole way.
-Enemies no longer wake up when you put them to sleep if you hit them. Still can wake up by the stage elements though. There was always a 50/50 chance before, I love that change.

      Regarding some disliked changes:
There's only been a few things here and there where I was sad to see it changed, such as the spring jump no longer using Mario's voice and just a sound effect. Or even when you hit a wall with super jump above and it makes a little comedic sound effect when your paper form falls. Small things I loved.
Also they somehow made the hammer throw worse-- like, it was at least decently useful at the start now it's just pointless.

Also the screaming or reacting from audiences sadly is gone, and the style moves are a bit different than the original which threw off my original timing I learned for so long. But other than some few things, honestly I find more pros with this game than any bad ones. It feels like a love letter to the fans bringing this game back and I've really enjoyed playing it all over again for old times sake.
Been a blast playing it, and will probably play it several times over for different runs after my current one. Playing currently more the OG style, nothing crazy, or cheaty-like.
