Believe it or not, when the Nintendo Switch first launched back in March 2017, those first couple of months weren't exactly packed to the rafters with new releases. Folks had The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to keep them busy, of course, but beyond that, big tentpole releases seemed few and far between.
As such, FAST Racing NEO in several ways. With crisp visuals and rock-solid 60fps performance, its F-Zero-inspired gameplay still looks and plays great over eight years later.
For the Switch 2, Shin'en is back with another launch day release: Fast Fusion. Taking the blisteringly fast gameplay from previous releases and revamping the visuals to 4K displays, Fast Fusion introduces a new core gameplay mechanic that we think just might keep us occupied for weeks on end.
We caught up with Shin'en Multimedia's CEO Manfred Linzner to discuss the title and get an exclusive first look at the teaser trailer, which you can check out at the bottom of the article.
Nintendo Life: Can you talk about what’s new about Fast Fusion? We’re particularly interested in the new Fusion mechanic.
Manfred Linzner: The Fusion mechanic was the main reason we decided to do a new FAST game, because we only wanted to do another one when we would have something really cool and fresh to add.
Here's how it works: imagine you have two vehicles that you really like, for example, the fast Cebra Genetics and the heavy Mech Guyva. With Fusion, you can now merge both vehicles into a completely new one that combines their best features. The appearance of your new creation will be a cool mix of the looks of the two vehicles, and you can also save all your creations in the Fusion History for a later rebuild.
It's really fun to make your dream vehicle and get surprised by the new looks and feels.
What kind of changes have been made to the core gameplay? Will we still be switching between two colours?
We kept the phase switching base gameplay, because this is the DNA of FAST, but added a lot of new stuff.
For instance: Hyperjumps! You can now make Hyperjumps with your vehicle at any time. These are not little hops, but rather you get thrown up about 20m into the air. This allows you to cut corners, take out your opponents, find shortcuts on the tracks, pick up otherwise unreachable collectibles, and a few more secrets.
Of course it's not super safe to make a 20m jump while driving 700kmh through a dense forest, but it's totally exciting and takes the game to a whole new level! We promise, this will make your hands sweaty!
Can you run us through the game’s various modes? Will Hero Mode return?
Sure, here we go:
Championship - This is all new. Previously you won cups and unlocked new ones, and now you need to unlock them with credits. You earn them by playing the tracks, where better ranks mean more credits. You also collect credits on the tracks and get them for various actions like boosting through opponents. With the earned credits you can buy new vehicles, new cups, and so on.
Super Hero Mode - This is for the hardcore antigrav players. Some say it's our little homage to F-Zero! You need to win a race without crashing and you must not run out of energy. Combined with the new Hyperjump mechanic, this will really make your heart pump. Plus, to give everything a new spin, all tracks are played mirrored.
Time Attack - Here you can beat our own best times. Don't try this with the default roster; you really need to experiment with the new Fusion mechanic to have a chance!
We also have a new Jukebox section where you can use your credits to unlock music from all previous FAST games.
How many courses and vehicles can players expect to see?
We will announce all tracks at a later date. However, we prepared a First-look trailer so you can see some locations for yourselves! By the way, all tracks are brand new. Only two tracks are in known locations, but those are also completely new designs.
For vehicles, you can create hundreds of different ones with the Fusion mechanic.
What kind of experience can we expect from the multiplayer? Will there be GameShare ?
We Splitscreen and GameShare. Splitscreen will be for up to four players, all running at 60fps. GameShare will be for two players. Only one player needs the game, while the other just needs a Switch 2 to .
This works locally with anyone nearby or also across the internet with GameChat.

Your website mentions performance of 60fps up to 4K resolution. Can you talk a bit more about that? Will it be possible to modify performance and reach 120fps?
We five different graphic settings for TV mode, from 1080p/60fps to 1440p/60fps and up to 4k/60fps. We even have a special 30fps/4k 'Ultra Quality' mode. We tried to make a good compromise for everyone. Everything runs in HDR which you can enjoy directly in Handheld mode or when your TV s it.
120fps is not ed, but that was mostly because making a game for launch day isn't that easy and we had to decide on a few key features. Perhaps this is something we can bring later with a patch.
How has development been for the Switch 2 compared to the original? What has the power of the new console allowed you to do?
In FAST RMX we felt like we hit a border on how good a 60fps game can look, but for Fast Fusion on Nintendo Switch 2 many discarded ideas were now possible to achieve on the new hardware.
We worked especially hard to make the lighting in the game much more dynamic. Now we are much closer to Global Illumination, with real-time reflections, light propagation, and great volumetric effects. This makes the whole world much more alive.
Another thing we were able to improve a lot were the special effects for things like explosions, rain, fog, tornadoes, and so on. We think players will love the new look of the game.
Shin'en games have historically been very well optimised. What sort of file size can we expect for Fast Fusion?
4K textures all over the place and 4K screen modes made our game grow substantially. With a lot of compression and optimisation we were still able to pack it all down to around 3.7GB. Our largest game ever, I guess!

Fast RMX launched on day one for the Switch and became a beloved launch title. How important was it for Fast Fusion to be available on day one for Switch 2?
This was our goal from the beginning of development last year.
Many Switch 2 players will have F-Zero GX to enjoy at launch along with dozens of Switch 1 games via backwards compatibility. With more competition on day one, what kind of sales expectations do you have for Fast Fusion?
I think Fast Fusion offers something very different to any other racing game currently available and we hope players will like that.
We will also offer the game at a very nice price, because people have already invested a good amount of money into the new hardware, and they should be able to see what their new system can deliver.
Speaking of F-Zero, what kind of impact has the series had on your development of Fast titles?
Since our childhood it was the main inspiration for sci-fi racing. Besides that, we think both titles play very differently. And especially for Fast Fusion, we also made sure that everyone can have fun with the game without getting stuck along the road.
What are your thoughts on the Switch 2 from what you’ve seen so far? Are you hoping to it more in the future? Could we expect any performance updates for your existing Switch games?
For us, it's a great piece of hardware and we have many ideas for it. Therefore, we already have other projects for Switch 2 in planning. Also, Switch 2 updates for our previous games like The Touryst is something we're discussing.
This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.
A huge thanks to Manfred for providing this early first look at Fast Fusion's trailer. The game will launch on day one alongside the Switch 2 on 5th June 2025.

Loved the wiiu game and the upgraded switch version! Beautiful smooth visuals, can’t wait to check this one out day 1!
Fast RMX was okay, but very iften the vehicles felt hard to control? For me. Especially in the way of trying to make tight turns.
I'm surprised that development apparently only began early last year. I would've thought they'd started it sometime after The Touryst, and The Punchuin was a stopgap release to make sure they had something to keep them going, given how polished the game looks and the more complex visuals and mechanics. Definitely says a lot about how efficient Shin'en is for such a small team, because it does not look like the quality's taken a hit anywhere. 100% going to grab this at launch (going for the $450 Switch 2 and then getting Mario Kart physically with some giftcards so I can shave that down by $30, so hopefully I don't have any issues getting a preorder in).
Great interview. I've always been really impressed with this developer and this game sounds good. Definitely one I will keep an eye on and probably pick up.
I love the original F-Zero and X.
Fast RMX and its cumbersome vehicles had not much to do with them...
I'm glad this series remains exclusive to Nintendo. Even if we don't get a new F-Zero or WipEout on Switch 2, at the very least we still had FAST Fusion. FAST Racing Neo and FAST RMX were fantastic entry on Wii U and Switch 1 so definitely going to get into this one as well.
I’m pleased for these guys to have what looks like another hit ready for launch. 5 performance modes - love this!! I’ve enjoyed every Shin’en game I’ve bought and will probs get this near to launch even if I play MKW a lot more - I want these guys to have my money. Just wish Nintendo would hand over the F-Zero keys to this team. With Ninty’s oversight and finances I think they could make an absolute beast of a game.
I am SO bad at Fast RMX. I bought it day one, and I ain't unlocked jack!!!!
Crikey, not much of a trailer, considering the proximity to release...
All sounds amazing but wish there was more to that trailer. Still don’t feel like we’ve got a proper look at the game and as mentioned in the interview, this will be competing against both MKW and F-Zero GX at launch. Need to be doing more to get it to stand out in people’s minds before launch as I’m sure it deserves it!
Day one purchase , loved the first 2
@gcunit They did tell me a proper deep dive will be on the way very soon.
A fan of the first two like I am of F-Zero GX and Wipeout series.
Insta-.
Interesting read, thank you.
Shin'en always manages to get a lot out of the hardware they make games for and this is the case with Switch 2. I'll get this one as I love futuristic racers.
I loved this game on Switch 1. But it's soo difficult that it actively discourges me from playing it. So even though I love the visuals and audio. I won't be buying it.
I Nano Assault at the Wii U launch, was the best. Wish they’d bring that one back
@sanderev Similar story for me. The games look great, but I'm yet to get the Switch game because the Wii U game had me licked, and I wasn't a huge fan of the phase switching mechanic that gets mentioned in the interview. I bought Redout 2 instead (though still sealed so untried).
RMX suffered from one thing, environmental obstacles...
The teaser above I saw giant rolling spiky balls...
These things are fine if they are predictable but there was 1 track at least on RMX that had like spinning doors, so tediously frustrating.
I hope they release a third Jett Rocket game
The thing I love about F-Zero is the tight controls, and how holding the shoulder buttons allows for sharp turning not otherwise possible. I love the FAST series but do wish it had tighter controls with shoulder buttons for sharper turning. Seems every futuristic racer that's not F-Zero makes your vehicle skid when turning sharp which doesn't feel rewarding. Nailing the timing on the shoulder buttons and pulling off a quick turn does.
All that said this will be day one.
what is the difference between the 1440p 60 mode and the 4k 60 mode?
@Rukasumi 4k is equal to 2160p so it will be better. Some TVs/monitors were made as QHD (1440p) to be middle tier between Full HD (1080p) and 4k (2160p)
@Olliemar28 any details on the "very nice price" Manfred mentioned?
i don't know when I'll get the Switch 2, but when I do, this will be day one for sure! Looks amazing.
I don't understand why Nintendo doesn't just let Shin'en take over F-Zero.
@Byaaah31 Not yet, but from what he said, it will likely be comparable to Fast RMX.
The only Shin'en games I've played were the Jett Rocket games back in the Wii days, but I know those folks have always managed to push the power of a console to its absolute limit. Looks like they're keeping that tradition alive here.
I’ll be getting this day 1. Does anyone know if there will be a physical release? Or will I have to go digital like I did with the OG switch?
@zander_dale Fast RMX had a belated physical release for Switch.
@Burning_Spear I don't understand why people assume Shin'en would want that. They have their independence, their own racing game series and full control over what to do with it. Sounds good to me!
Great interview, was already interested in giving the Fast series in general a try and even more so after reading this (should probably play RMX first also considering that I already have it even though Fusion is quite tempting considering the game itself, it ing GameShare etc.) - would be pretty cool if they eventually released Switch 2 updates for their previous games, too!
@Sahnec Same here. I bought both of them.
@zander_dale
No chance of a physical release with this one unfortunately, as a smaller indie team, they can’t justify the cost of production for physical releases in relation to the sales. To begin with at least, there’s always the possibility of a limited run down the road, but initially this will be digital only.
If they want to keep going as a company maximising profits are as important as anything else for them.
It’s in these circumstances that even I don’t mind buying digital, and I’ve always been a staunch physical first gamer.
I enjoyed Fast RMX at the Switch launch so I have hopes this will be good too! This kind of game should benefit a lot from the increased horsepower. The Fusion mechanic doesn't do much for me as a hook - I don't care much about choosing vehicles, I just want to race. It does lend itself to a catchy name, though.
I enjoyed the first game and put quite a few hours into it. I know I'm going to enjoy this too as well. Getting this day one.
"The Fusion mechanic was the main reason we decided to do a new FAST game, because we only wanted to do another one when we would have something really cool and fresh to add."
So basically, they copy F-Zero in this department as well, since Nintendo folks have said a similar thing about F-Zero and that's why we haven't gotten a proper new F-Zero in such a long time.
I appreciate the drive to do new exciting things with games, but some developers really need to embrace the idea that more of the same is not always a bad thing. All the FAST games so far have been really cool, and that's not just because they kept coming up with cool new gameplay ideas, but because the core gameplay is just really solid as it is.
That said, I'm definitely picking this game up at launch. Will absolutely be playing this, Mario Kart World, and F-Zero in that launch weekend!
I'll be looking forward to the inevitable digital foundry video on this one. The series has become a good benchmark for what a well-optimized third party game can look like on Nintendo consoles.
@Jayenkai Same. RMX looks good but it was too hard for me so I didn’t play it very much.
Until we get a new F-Zero game, this is perfect.
Loved Fast RMX, loved The Tourist and I will get this one, if the price is <25€.
Nice interview. Love how those guys are to-the-point!
I had a blast with Fast Racing Neo and Fast RMX was the only game I had to switch with Breath of the Wild. ing this one as soon as I've got my Switch 2 and MK World is installed.
No particular interest in the Fusion mechanic, but good to know where the game is getting its name from. And sure, why not. Just really into the futuristic races. I that the online was weird, but I've got Mario Kart for that. So it really doesn't matter.
The Hyperjump feature really looks like it'll make use of the improved memory, it's gonna be crazy I think. All those new modes just speak "New F-Zero features" for me though, it's a perfect example of what new innovations you could do with a new entry.
I wonder if they are using DLSS, but it actually seems they won't need it, it's looking promising.
The trailer's not looking like 4K though, in fact it looks a bit blurrier than even 1080p, but the screenshots do look high resolution. It's still looking like a tech showcase for the system already, and good to see they seemingly finally have the updated, 4K-ed dev kits, that way I'm sure they'll soon show a version closer to the final release.
It's a shame it won't 120fps at launch though, but considering how it's going to show off a lot of modes I think it could be possible there, Mario Kart World wants that too after all.
The fast series has always been the most reliable anti grav racer to match the likes of your F-Zero and Wip3out compared to the rest. It looks great and most importantly is FAST whilst giving you the feel of speed and control.
I’ll be saying it for another decade Nintendo, but just outsource the damn F-Zero IP to shinen if you have nothing new planned for it - they have demonstrated time and again to have the talent for this stuff.
The WiiU Version was good. The Switch version simply had no online gaming. It is all fake. Just set up four switch with four games and play. Let everyone say the current position and when they overtake. It will not match. The entire first round everyone is #1. You also feel collisions and do not see the overtakes right after. It is all fake.
The WiiU Version worked fine in that remark. The Switch version was just a single player experience, where the real winner was gambled out at the end.
So i would skip this one, until someone confirms the network stuff is legit.
1 second of gameplay
@JaxonH Yeah, those other games like Wipeout and Quantum Redshift are great and all, but the heavier controls ensure that they're no substitute for F-Zero, and I don't know why no one has tried to take F-Zero's approach until now.
Have you seen Aero GPX and XF Extreme Formula, though? They're both in early access on Steam, but they look very promising so far. Aero GPX, especially, seems to have perfectly nailed the ridiculously high speeds and tight controls of F-Zero.
I buy every Shin’en game day 1 without question. They
Make amazing games that are very optimised and always fun. Truly a developer from the PS2 era, in the very best way of the word.
@Yosher Why does it have to be the devs of F-Zero and FAST who have this mentality of "we need to reinvent the wheel and deliver something truly new", and not the ones who churn out Call of Duty or New Super Mario Bros. sequels rapid-fire?
It's bizarre and frustrating how some franchises (as well as genres/sub-genres) will get so many sequels and copycats, and others will sit dormant for weird reasons like this.
Is this game getting a physical I mean a game key?
@MegaVel91 it's doable, I suggest you give it another try invest, 1 hour. I guarantee you will get the nack of it. After you get somewhat familiar with the superfast racing, it easily became one of my favorite games on Switch. There's really nothing else out there like it.
@smoreon I'm not familiar with Call of Duty enough to comment on that, but at least New Super Mario Bros. lasted only 4 games. We've come out of that NSMB era, now that Wonder is out.
Though I do wonder why some devs have this weird mentality for little to no reason, as well. Makes you wonder if the FAST devs run out of new mechanics to implement, if that will mean that the series will not continue anymore either. I guess for now we can be thankful that they seem to have enough juice in them to consistently make a new release every generation since the WiiWare days!
Why Nintendo hasn't yet swooped in to purchase Shin'en and put them to work on an F-Zero sequel as a valuable 2nd party developer is among the greatesr mysteries of the last decade.
Very excited for this game! I play Grip on Xbox and it's great. Can't wait to try this.
I never understood why this studio only release their games on switch, it's not like Nintendo was paying them to do so.
I was really hoping it would have online multiplayer. I couldn’t find any info about it but this interview pretty much confirmed its split screen and game share only. I’ll still play it and enjoy it. It reminds me of Star Wars episode one racer. Great fast pace, futuristic racer but no online modes.
I would love to see their take on blur.
@Andy_Witmyer At this point I just assume they don't want to.
Nice, I like seeing a 1440p specific performance mode to match my monitor res, probably means it can put any extra resources that would've been used on 4k elsewhere to make it look a bit nicer. New mechanics sound fun, looking forward to it.
@Yosher It was a rhetorical question. I don't think anyone knows the answer! 😅
Call of Duty gets a new sequel every year, and there's not much evolution or innovation in each entry. The stories and levels are new, but the gameplay mostly stays the same.
And I mentioned New Super Mario Bros., because it's a Nintendo series that not only got 4 or 5 entries (don't forget Luigi!) in about as many years, but also reused all kinds of assets and elements between the games. It's very strange and inconsistent for Nintendo to release a bunch of Mario sequels that are little more than level packs, and then turn around and say that they can't make a new F-Zero because it needs some revolutionary new idea.
Those of us who enjoy franchises like F-Zero, Star Fox, Shenmue, Kid Icarus, Ape Escape, etc. etc., are starving here, while other games are getting more sequels than we could even keep up with or care about!
But you're right- at least Shin'en releases a new FAST game every few years on average!
Manfred is the GOAT
Honestly, the game looks pretty, but it's just not the same as when they showed the first one and everyone was impressed about the Wii U running something with those graphics.
I still don't understand why everybody keeps saying F-Zero, F-Zero, F-Zero. Fast has always been more akin to Wipeout.
@Burning_Spear either because they don't want to and already refused or because Nintendo understands that they are a small 5 people studio and wants to stay that way.
@Denoloco they never made games for the PS2. They started on GBC and GBA, before moving on to DS and Wii
I love the FAST Racing games. I have a physical Wii U copy of Fast Racing NEO, and also have RMX on the Switch, so I'm really really interested in picking this up. With that said, please for love of all that is holy, tone down the difficulty just a little - just a tad. Forget doing literally anything in Hypersonic mode, I can really only get Rank 1s in Subsonic...
Not sure about the hyper jumps. Generally, I'm against gimmicks in pure racing games. Otherwise, looking forward to it. I bought Fast RMX on day one for Switch so will likely do likewise with Fast Fusion for Switch 2.
Edit:
I agree with Mommar. This series is closer to Wipeout than F-Zero, and that's due to the sliding nature of the handling. Not a bad comparison either because Wipeout is a great series, and I'd love to see a version on Switch 2.
@JaxonH I'm the complete opposite. I find F-Zero controls almost too good and incredibly shallow.
I like weight & air-brakes. F-Zero is more about racing the pack and managing boost and damage without the addition of mastering the more complex controls of the actual vehicle itself. Definitely not my thing.
It'd be classic WipEout every day of the week for me
“Speaking of F-Zero, what kind of impact has the series had on your development of Fast titties?“ 😏
(That’s what I read. I might need a lie down.)
I assumed GameShare would allow to play the game on Switch 1 but Manfred here states that "the other just needs a Switch 2 to ". Does that mean that sharing with a Switch 1 is out, even locally? I understand sharing online requires a Switch 2 on both sides as it requires GameChat which is exclusive to Switch 2, but I would be really bummed if local GameShare on Switch 1 is not possible as I was really looking forward to that feature.
@Sebos Gameshare "Nintendo Switch systems can only receive games that are compatible with Nintendo Switch."
I'm guessing that means Switch 1 games with a Switch 2 upgrade will work, but Switch 2 exclusives won't allow gameshare on Switch 1.
@chardir I considered that but it's not consistent with the info we have about Split Fiction (a Switch 2 exclusive) being able to GameShare with a Switch 1.
https://www.ea.com/games/split-fiction/split-fiction/news/nintendo-switch-2-features
@Paulo
You didn't understand me. What I meant is they are akin to developers or how games used to be developed in the past.
Look's brilliant, have preordered already for launch day
I just don't understand why I'm trippin'. Shin'en are the BEST at making Nintendo exclusive (and first) titles. FAST Fusion looks like a flippin' PS5 Wipeout game. Clocked in at 4K HDR at 60fps with a memory size of less than 4GB? I'm most definitely gonna buy it at the eShop once I get the Nintendo Switch 2!
Can't stand the repetitive, annoying phase-switching mechanic. No other game has done this for a reason - it's obnoxious. Just give us a good racing game without a tedious, useless gimmick. It should stand on it's own like an Fzero. I would buy this Day 1 if they had finally ditched that ridiculous thing that causes cheap hits galore. But alas....
