Creating a brand-new IP can prove risky at the best of times, yet when AI: The Somnium Files) believe in their vision.
Launching on Switch on 24th April 2025, The Hundred Line looks to combine the visual novel approach of Danganronpa with tactical gameplay that might be more akin to Into The Breach. It boasts a vast, eclectic cast that, if past works are anything to go by, will no doubt be completely expendable after they are forced to defend a school from invading creatures.
We recently caught up with both creators from Too Kyo Games via email to find out more about the project, whether Mr. Kodaka might ever return to Danganronpa, and what The Hundred Line's success means for the future of the studio.
Nintendo Life: The Hundred Line: Last Defence Academy is Too Kyo Games’ first tactical RPG. Can you talk about this approach and what kind of challenges you faced with its development?
Kazutaka Kodaka: This is our first in-house IP and is a collaborative work between myself and Uchikoshi-san. The game progression consists of multiple branching scenarios, and because the theme is war, that is why we needed to incorporate the tactical RPG into the game.
Kotaro Uchikoshi: Creating the scenario and writing is always a challenge. Additionally, we had to take care of the financial part of development and invested quite a bit to produce this game, which was challenging for us.
The creation was very unpredictable because there are so many branching scenarios that I had to take care of. It was a little bit challenging.
Which games did you look at as inspiration for the tactical gameplay?
Mr. Uchikoshi: Fire Emblem.
Mr. Kodaka: Into the Breach and also Dynasty Warriors.
The idea of people, often school kids, being forced into a dangerous situation by a mysterious entity is very reminiscent of Danganronpa, Zero Escape, and Ever17. What is it about these kinds of scenarios that attracts [you both] to them so much?
Mr. Kodakan: I know that this game is similar to Danganronpa, but it is my favorite type of game! That is why the idea is a little bit similar, but it’s not exactly the same.
Mr. Uchikoshi: Kodaka-san created the main idea behind the game, the overall plot and concept behind it. Usually I create the characters in the game I make, so I have to think about the main idea behind the game first. However, because this game was based on Kodaka-san’s idea, I had to think a lot about all the scenarios based on his idea, which was very interesting and a different way of writing scenarios.
Mr. Kodaka previously mentioned a willingness to revisit Danganronpa again in the future. Is that still the case, or is your focus now solely on The Hundred Line?
Mr. Kodaka: Danganronpa is a very memorable series for me. But right now I want to put all of my time, energy, and effort into The Hundred Line. Right now I am not thinking of returning to the series, I’m completely focused on The Hundred Line.
There are quite a lot of characters in this game. How did you approach their creation, and do you have a particular favourite?
Mr. Kodaka: When I wrote this scenario I thought that each character could be the main character. I do not have a favorite character out of them all. That was my approach to writing them, thinking about creating each character as if they can be the main character.

It’s been mentioned that Too Kyo Games fell into debt with the development of Hundred Line. How are things at the moment, and how important will the game’s success be to the studio?
Mr. Kodaka: If the game does not sell well, we may be done, so it is very important we put all our effort into the game and that it does well.
Can you talk about the decision to make Hundred Line a console exclusive for Switch? And will this be a timed exclusive like Master Detective Archives?
Mr. Kodaka: Spike Chunsoft owns the Rain Code IP so we can’t comment on that. At the moment we do not have plans to release on other platforms, but since this is our in-house IP it is something we will discuss in the future. You never know!
What are your thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2 so far? Do you have any hopes for the console in the years ahead?
Mr. Kodaka: We hope that the performance and the power of the console becomes better.
Mr. Uchikoshi: If I was a player I would assume it would be fun using different consoles. But as a creator I feel the same as Kodaka-san and hope for more performance and power.
The two of you have worked together on multiple projects over the years, including co-directing World’s End Club with your studio. How did you come to collaborate so frequently, even before Too Kyo Games, and have you changed your approach to working together at all?
Mr. Kodaka: Before we worked together at Too Kyo Games we would meet occasionally to listen to each other's ideas or ask for advice on our own projects, but after we started working together at Too Kyo Games we started collaborating on direction and writing scenarios. If I talk World End Club, I was creative director so it was nothing to do with scenarios, more like Uchikoshi-san wrote the scenarios.
The Hundred Line is our first collaborative piece together. So this is the first, and I hope it is not the last, but it is a huge milestone of the collaboration.
Mr. Uchikoshi: Before, we were good friends, but now we work together, we work on the same title, and we are also business partners. We are much closer than we were before.
This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.
Thank you to Mr. Kodaka and Mr. Uchikoshi for taking the time to speak with us. The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy will launch on Switch on 24th April 2025. Will you be picking it up? Let us know with a comment down below.

I wish I could get into these games, but I don’t like the art style.
People have said for years that Dangonrompa was a goat though… and this game does have an interesting premise!
I know this is sort of how Final Fantasy became a household name, but I feel like they’re staking A LOT on a brand new IP that’s launching as a Switch 1 exclusive.
Yikes. Why is it so do or die? Do Dangonronpa games not sell well? Zero Escape is also pretty popular from what I gather. What's going on here?
I sure hope it does go well for them, as risky as it is.
Their last couple of games have been mixed. World's End Club started really strong but quickly became a ho-hum experience. I really Liked Rain Code, but it always felt lacking despite a really good premise.
Great interview, fingers crossed this game will sell well for the sake of Too Kyo Games (I did my part by preordering a physical copy from my usual retailer) - it coming to Switch and also Steam hopefully will help!
I could be completely wrong, but I believe there's a ton of recourses that go into RPGish games, and they tend to not sell as well as other genres.
I personally love them, but they take me forever, so it usually means I'm not buying or playing them all.
I hope it does well. I respect that they're going for it!
@TerribleTerabytes I think that's a different studio, Spike Chunsoft made and funded those games and own the IP. Too Kyo games have only solely developed a few games, Master Detective Archives and Worlds End Club and a mobile game called Tribe Nine.
Already pre-ordered on Steam. Haven't really been thrilled with the Too Kyo games I've played thus far, but I'm hopeful this one will capture my attention again the way their work with Spike Chunsoft did (Danganronpa, Zero Escape, and AI: The Somnium Files are all fantastic series). If nothing else, the demo was pretty fun.
There's an extensive demo on Steam for people who are curious about the game and want to give it a shot for free.
Not super confident it's going to sell particularly well but I hope it does get enough for them to continue making whatever they want to make in the future. I've been looking forward to this one and will be picking it up day one.
The quote that influenced me to put a preorder down. I appreciate the artist, Rui Komatsuzaki. And I enjoyed the demo. I'm invested, even though my tactical rpg backlog is deeper than the Grand Canyon.
Hah.... The game seems fun, and I'm always down for a tactical RPG. The characters seem fun, and I'd totally be down for it, but I don't play M-rated games. If you do, though, you should totally go and this!
@Ralizah I'm dying for another Somnium Files game.Miss the vibe of that universe
I enjoyed the demo, and hope it'll do well. However, it does seem like a fairly niche game, so it's a risky move.
First off:
Don't threaten us, if we don't like the look or style of gameplay we aren't going to buy it!
Second, don't threaten your workforce with premature job loss.
Thirdly: stop the pity party!
This game looks cool. I’ve never played the Dangonrompa games, and I’ve never been a fan of visual novels, but I do like the stylistic art and combat seems solid. I’ll probably check it out!
Gulit tripping has never saved any game.
@TerribleTerabytes It's crazy to think that Awakening was the same thing for Fire Emblem. It went the opposite direction and it's a huge IP pillar for Nintendo now, but if it didn't sell well it would have probably been donezo.
Demo for this game has been "coming soon" for like 2 months already, where the hell is it?
The fact that they're taking a big risk sounds a bit like Vanillaware and Unicorn Overlord. Since I'm a huge tactical RPG fan, this game is definitely on my radar and seems a better choice for me than Donganronpa, since I'm not really into visual novels that much, I think... But colour me interested!
I wish them well, but it looks like it is about as far removed from what I like as possibly can, so...
I wish them well!
@Spider-Kev it’s hardly threatening you or the workforce, merely stating some facts about their current finances.
Don’t buy the game if it isn’t your thing.
Would have been great if they timed the Switch demo to release with this interview.
@UltimateOtaku91 Master Detective Archives, Worlds End Club and Tribe Nine weren't made solely by Too Kyo they were all co-developed with other studios. Kodaka even mentions the Rain Code IP belongs to Spike Chunsoft.
Uchikoshi is likely my favourite gaming auteurs but I'm less hot on Kodaka.
I also love tactical games so this will probably sit well with me but overall I kind of just feel dread for how tied up Uchikoshi's career seems to be in the success of this niche game.
I actually went on the eshop yesterday to look for this game but it doesn't seem to have a listing yet. Fingers crossed the demo comes to Switch as well to build a buzz.
Honestly it's unfortunate that they've gone in the "advance wars" direction with small little whatever units around the master units etc. Big turn-off for me - I like Fire Emblem exactly because this is never the case in those games. "Small fry" are whole units and as strong as whole units, as they should be.
The game industry really is broken when one game can kill a studio. I have a friend who worked on a big title and was laid off as soon as the game was released.
I'm not brilliant at tactical games, so I hope there's an Easy mode. I loved Danganronpa when my roomie and I played it tho and I hear the story is peak.
Is this getting a physical release on switch in the UK? I've not seen anything up on any websites regarding pre orders etc.
I hate the art style, but I love Fire Emblem and Dynasty Warriors. I'm very conflicted with this one, but if the reviews are good, I'll get it.

Yeah the reality is most companies not in the too big to fail category are always one big failure away from folding. Probably a little bit of poor planning here but playing to a niche audience in the fickle world of gaming is a risk.
Considering the genre they focus on, I'm not sure what "selling well" means from their point of view. Maybe the number they're expecting is not so high and the game is a success. I hope it is
I don't know how much of the games they collaborated in was developed by them, but they are solid games. At least, I enjoy them
I played the demo on Steam and really loved it. I'm a fan of the Danganronpa games, but always felt they were a little too light on actual gameplay. The tactical battles here were really fun and maybe just what the game needs.
I hope it's a great success for them, but as with most new games I'll likely wait until the prices comes down a little bit to buy.
Why Does Every Word Start With A Capital?
@TheExile285 I was expecting to read this article and they also say demo out today on Switch
I liked the looks of this enough to put down $5 on a preorder, and I'll be curious to give it a try someday, after I've had my fill of XCX. Hundred Line seemed like it might give me a taste of what everyone enjoys about Danganronpa, but with enough gameplay to keep me engaged.
Honestly, I feel like the market is a little bit too oversaturated of Danganronpa spiritual successors from the Danganronpa creator XD
Oh no, not another FE Awakening case. And in a similar genre too. I'll have to try out the demo on steam. Hopefully it's a good time
@iLikeUrAttitude Worked for Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive (both games literally named back in the day for being do-or-die projects and was always marketed as such before it even released).
Also on the discussion of successful “do or dies” a relatively recent example is the Atelier series. The series was projected to go under if Ryza didn’t work out.
Thighs ended up being massive success to spawn 3 successful games and now Atelier can move on to another protag series.
Oh no! Hope the game does well.
I'm definitely interested in this game. I bought all 4 Danganronpa games a few years ago on Switch when they were on sale, but only played and beat the first one. It reminds me of Digimon Survive, another game I've wanted to play, but just haven't found the time. VN's are usually pretty tedious for me, at least with JRPG's you have gameplay to break up the long cutscenes. I think not also releasing on Playstation might hurt this.
This team has proven they can make compelling and fun games. It's an easy purchase for me. Let's hope they can keep going.
Zero Escape, Somnium Files, RainCode, World's End Club, these are some of my absolute favorite games from the last 20 years. I desperately hope this studio, or at least these creators, are able to keep doing what they love as the years go on.
This is my most anticipated game from two of my favorite game developers so it's a day one for me.
I’m hoping this does well (& that we also eventually see a continuation of the Danganronpa and Zero Escape series’). It’s not yet up on the Nintendo UK eShop for Wishlisting or pre-ordering so hopefully that changes soon as we near the release date.
demo, when? I'm interested
At this point, it's clear that Kodaka does not want to come back to Spike-Chunsoft. So, yeah RIP Danganronpa for good.
I’m confused, isn’t this free to play? Seems like the wrong decision.
It’s on IOS already.
I see your threat to buy the game and raise you that I will wait until it hits the clearance bin.
Somehow I doubt the creators will lack for work if it doesn’t sell, it just won’t solely be on their own .
@Servbot_EJ
Ohhhhh, you’re totally correct. Thank you !
I’ll definitely them with this release.
And it's not even in the eShop, not available for preorder a month before release! So whose fault is that?
I will, of course, be buying but Spike are pretty niche.
I wish them the best.
@JohnnyMind Can I ask where you pre-ordered the physical?
No physical available to me locally from shops so no buy which is a real shame.
Damn, I really like the VN's that these two creators make, HUGE fan of the Zero Escape and Danganronpa games, and I absolutely hate tactical RPG's. I didn't even go for Persona 5 Tactica and I am also a huge Persona fan. I also really enjoyed Rain Code so I really hope this does well. I have it on my steam Wishlist, so I will give it a shot as I would rather take the same risk and show my for this team than see them disappear.
It's on my wishlist. I'll defo give it a strong consideration if it reviews well. I like this dev's work.
I just bought Rain Code and I love the Danganronpa games. Bought them multiple times to have them on multiple consoles because I've liked to come back to them. I really hope whoever owns Danganronpa now updates the Switch version for Switch 2 because the performance was abysmal on Switch.
@Dunan That's why I was asking around. PlayAsia has a physical European copy for £57 GBP but it says it isn't releasing until December 🤔
@Theghostofkeithmoon From my usual retailer gamesandmovies.it but yeah, if I recall correctly its release date was the end of the year there as well so most likely a placeholder - doesn't matter to me as I'm getting this game no matter when it comes out and if the physical release gets cancelled they'll refund me (it has already happened for Omori for example) and I'll just get it digitally, but of course your mileage may vary.
@JohnnyMind Thanks for replying. There's an option to get a European physical copy in December from Play Asia for £57 (which is expensive for a standard version, but maybe that price is a placeholder and will come down). I prefer physical games for (what I consider) games and I am a big fan of tactical games so I think I'll place a speculative order too
@Theghostofkeithmoon You're welcome, fingers crossed this does come out physically (I also prefer physical games whenever available here in Italy or not excessively expensive because of duties when I import them and yes, even more so in the case of " games") and I hope you'll enjoy it - glad to hear that it's also on PlayAsia!
Sorry to hear that. Game looks cool in the trailer, but visual novels do nothing for me
I love Uchikoshi's work and the Danganronpa series, Rain Code was okay, but I'm really just not at all feeling this one. I'll check out the demo and maybe that'll sell me on it but nothing I've seen so far has made me interested.
@msm2000 seems like they forgotten about europe
I really loved the demo. I'll be picking this up day one.
@TerribleTerabytes these devs, while being the creators of Danganronpa and Zero Escape, don't own the rights to either. This is their new studio they opened together, independent from Spike Chunsoft.
I really hope it does well, it looks like it could be great... But I wish they didn't stake everything on a game coming out at the end of the console's life cycle. All eyes are going to be on Switch 2 at this point, so their sales are definitely going to feel that impact unfortunately.
Apparently, murder "games" are still a thing in Japan...just watching Alice In Borderland on Netflix...don't understand the weird obsession of killing someone on purpose...like PvP killing spree...it's Japan afterall...hardly anything is non-surprising over there, right? The Limited edition on Amazon looks quite bountyfull though...
So I'm seeing articles on other sites that the demo for this is out on Switch, but when I got to the Nintendo website page for it there's no demo button yet. Has anyone else successfully gotten it?
@ozwally They took their time but the Switch demo is finally out.

@CR0J0 Maybe there was a delay between the announcement and when it went live.
I have it ing now.
@TheExile285 thanks, tried it earlier and I’m sold. I’ve preordered from Amazon
@TheExile285 so it wasn't showing on my desktop browser but the option was there when I actually got onto my switch and looked in the eshop, thank you for responding!
@Solid_Python I try the demo on steam.
@EarthShake You should try the demo on steam. It’s very well made. I expect the combat to be the same level of digimon survive, but it’s a lot better than that.
@Azura That is Tribe Nine. It’s a different game, but it has the same developer.
