Update []:
Folks, don't panic — it sounds like Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster will actually allow you to toggle the encounter rate all the way to 0%.
Given previous screenshots of the game, which you can see in the original report, many assumed that the feature had been removed. However, Square Enix reps have confirmed to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier at PAX East that you will be able to set encounters to 0%.
A reply to Jason's post suggests that it's an ability you unlock at some point during the game, rather than being on the menu like the 50%, 100% (average rate) and 200% rates are. Perhaps it's a new accessory or something? We'll have to wait and see.
Other outlets have also reportedly confirmed this with Square Enix reps at PAX East, with RPGFan stating that they were told it's not available from the very start of the game.
Good news all around, then!
Original Story: Square Enix is bringing Bravely Default: Flying Fairy to the Switch 2 on the console's launch day via an HD Remaster, and we're pretty happy to see the first entry in this delightful series make the jump to home consoles. But it's being launched as a Game-Key Card game, which has definitely put a bit of an asterisk on what should be a celebration.
Now, there might be another wrinkle to contend with, as a Square Enix blog post has highlighted a number of new and returning features from the 3DS game.
The big thing that has people worried is the "Encounter Rate Settings" section, where the blog specifically states (along with a screenshot, below) that "You can set the rate of random enemy encounters at 50% intervals to anywhere from 50% to 200%."
Yet, in the Western release of Bravely Default, you could reduce the encounter rate to 0%, meaning you could turn off random encounters entirely. It was such a good feature that allowed players to customise their experience, and that appears to be entirely gone here.

There are some caveats here, of course — this remaster may well be based on the original Japanese release of the game, titled Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. The Western 3DS release is actually based on an enhanced rerelease of the game called Bravely Default: For the Sequel, which added tons of quality-of-life features.
In the original Japanese release, there was no way to amend the encounter rate at all; this was added in For the Sequel and stuck around as a feature for the follow-up, Bravely Second: End Layer. You can't turn off encounters for Bravely Default 2, but enemies are visible on the overworld, so there are no random encounters.
If this has been removed, it seems like an odd choice given its popularity, and other features such as fast forward have remained. Plus, Square Enix is adding new content in the form of two new minigames. So it's not like this is just a simple, straight port with nicer visuals.
We've reached out to Square Enix to confirm this information, and we'll let you know if there are any updates.

Wow. Went from really excited to replay this to probably never buying after seeing it was a key card release and is now missing features.
That is definitely an unusual choice that'll probably hurt the experience, though I guess I can kind of understand why because with how early you hit the level cap in the original there was virtually no reason to even bother fighting most of the endgame enemies. You were much better off just going to a lategame town, turning on encounters there to grind your classes, and otherwise just keeping them turned off except when filling out the Vampire spell list.
It already lost the best feature of having the full game on cartridge
Probably due to the build used. Happens all the time. Devs often pick a build to work off of (for various reasons) and go from there. Especially since one build becomes a global build. Still getting it so I can get closer to mothballing my 3DS.
Or it might be an original vision sort of thing. My bet is they just chose the most convenient build though.
Edit: Cool looks like they kept it for those that use it.
SquareEnix got really good at being bad
This rerelease is such a massive fumble. Then again, this is the same company that couldn’t get kingdom hearts working on switch without cloud gaming.
Removed - unconstructive
Between this, the fact this port of a 3DS game with the same models is on a game key card, and all they're adding are some mini games, plus the fact that the story was a sour point for many, I have absolutely no qualms skipping this rerelease and just trying to finish it on 3DS instead.
From the title I thought you meant Street.

@sanderev I mean, they have a good reason too. But devs have done this for a while. Now it’ll have to be d, which is pro-consumer.
might as well just play it on 3DS. I still have the 3DS version, never finished it. Might start it again one of these days. Gonna just completely ignore this version.
Sounds easy enough to patch in.
Possibly turning encounters off entirely is a separate toggle, potentially a single-button function for convenience. Then you could easily switch between 200% encounters and 0 encounters, for example.
Still not sure I’ll get this version though. I may buy it digitally, but will never buy a game-key card.
That was one of the games best features? Well, that is surprising. Never used 0%…so won’t miss it. Really excited for this one!
Well, it's a keycard game so they could probably just patch it in
@Alcea “How ba-a-a-ad can I be?”
I may still pick this up. I loved the original, always buy 100% digital, and seem to be in the minority in loving random encounters over world map enemies.
Big thing for me is what here is new enough to make me want to replay it? A small visual update and a couple of mini games likely wont be enough. Thats more of the question I am facing.
I mean the option to just remove all encounters is pretty damn broken, you can just go in and clean all dungeons off treasure for free for example.
@sanderev Here's a cool tip, no one is forcing you to read the comments.
I played the original ... and the sequel. I'm good. Hard - especially as a Game-Key Card game. Unfortunately, my suspicion is Square Enix is laying the groundwork for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to be released on a Game-Key Card as well. Not to mention any planned re-release of the unplayable cloud versions of the KH trilogy on the original Switch.
This might have been a big feature they got rid of, but the best feature they got rid of is being fully on a game card. It was a game I was interested in on Switch 2, but it instantly became a no-buy with the fake game card nonsense.
It's appalling how many Switch 2 games are going the fake game card route. I'm going to hold off on even buying a Switch 2 at all until there are enough games I want to buy for it on real game cards.
@sanderev If I had a penny for every time I’ve seen someone complain about people complaining about key cards or lack of physical releases, I’d have preordered at least two of the $39.99 amiibo with the funds.
@sanderev Based on the comments in this thread alone, I'd say you're well on your way to owning your own private island.
I agree it misses the best feature, but it's 3D.
Still wish the sequel was included, but noooooooo
Game key card = hard unless it's really cheap or the Switch 2 can be hacked easily (yes I find this digital only era annoying enough to already think about going fully free)
It might be important to point out that this port isn't being developed by the original team, but by Cattle Call.
Seems like I already own the best version of this game. No extra cash from me.
Edit: Glad the option is still in, albeit implemented differently. Still, the fact this is a game-key card release means my original post still stands.
@Pat_trick I like to read what people think of the games. But with the whining about Key-Cards that is now nearly impossible.
So..uhm…how does one finish an RPG with a random encounter rate of 0% - seems like boss fights would be a total nightmare if you can’t level up - or is that that point…to make it near impossible?
Or are the bosses also eliminated?
@GamingFan4Lyf It's basically a way to make the game a lot more difficult. Scripted fights and boss fights still happen.
Already a hobbled version with no street. It's like the Castlevania DS games and Splatoon. You can port them and freshen up the paint all you want, but there are some games that will never work as well as they did on their original hardware.
@GamingFan4Lyf You could change the encounter rate at any time. So if you had to backtrack or something, you wouldn't have to be interrupted. Or if you wanted to grind, you could pop it up to 200%.
In a game with repeated dungeon padding like this one, 0% was appreciated.
@GamingFan4Lyf
You can turn it to 0% when you can't be bothered to fight if you just want to run around and explore, and then turn encounters back on when you need to grind levels.
It's really annoying how Japanese developers wants to rerelease/remake original but inferior versions of the games. Some of them even do this on purpose. Aigis Episode for P3 remake shall be part of the base game, not a freaking 40$(!) DLC. Separate Ways for BIOHAZARD 4 remake, etc...
To be honest, the only thing that this has going for it is some lovely uprezz on the art and an escape for the phenomenal soundtrack to be listened to in much higher quality.
Otherwise I was actually expecting a BD2 style remake of 1 rather than a port/remaster.
I’ll stick with my 3DS copy, especially given it is physical (there is no reason this should be a game key card or not available on Switch 1). I do still enjoy the AR features and the 3D effect on the picture book world just a little bit more than what’s offered here.
FWIW the original games best feature was that it was entirely on a 3DS cartridge .. not this game key card crap !
People is making a fuss for something that's not a big deal, just set the encounter rate to 50% for the entire game; that should keep you away from getting tired of the combat.
Having the option certainly wouldn't be bad, but it's not something that people was going to be using unless they were planing to cheese the game.
I've technically had a score to settle with this game ever since my 3DS was stolen with Bravely Default in it. After making so much progress I just never returned to it. Now I'm battling my psychological statutes of limitations, as in, if I don't play this game sooner than later, I may give up on it entirely.
If it's based on the Japanese original version then this hasn't "removed" anything and this whole "article" is null and void.
@EarthboundBenjy i think I'll just do that anyways...this isn't worth the frustration for me since my 2ds is still brand new...
I'm hoping any kind of backlash can somehow discourage Square Enix from making every release a game key card moving forward. I'll be really discouraged from buying FF7R physical if it's also a game key card.
Removed - unconstructive
I still have the original, I'll stick with that.
I liked the original but not sure it's worth a double dip, even if Switch 2 level hd-fied. I may actually have the original ed or "archived" on my 3DS? I actually adjusted that feature quite a lot to help the experience and occassional need to grind. Never mind.
Couldn't get into this game at all. Maybe it's me but I just found it way too grindy and when that happens in a game I just get bored and lose interest.
Bought a lot of SE games on Switch 1 because they didn’t cut corners. They cut corners with this game a ton so skip from me.
I dunno why people are so surprised. The original western release had a megaton of issues along with DQ83D. S-E keeping up the trend shouldn't be much of a surprise.
how Nintendo amd Atlus thought an HD inferior version TMS#FE would be definite for Switch? Something like that i guess.
I'm only just recently playing the OG Bravely Default release here, and don't feel like purchasing a key card.
Nice to know the new features are limited to exclusions, and two minigames.
@sanderev You really trying to dismiss game ownership as mere "whining" now? Really? This is the hill you wanna die on?
Imagine if Takara Tomy or Konami had to barge into my house and take all of my TCG cards because they, say, no longer wanted to their table top games. What kind of normal gamer does not want to own what they play?
Anyone saying the encounter rate isn't a big deal - have you played the game?
If so, how long ago?
And again if so - do you the game for its random encounters? Or for all the cool boss fights that challenged you to change up your build?
BD was such a great game, IMO, because it let you cut out most of the JRPG fluff. Yeah, random battles still existed, but between fast forward and encounter rates, they were really more of their own optimization problem - how to make a party to grind through them quickly enough so that you could master the classes and then turn them off.
You can cheese dungeons with 0% encounters? So what? I can't recall a single dungeon in BD that was particularly clever or interesting. And that's OK! That's not the focus of the game, the combat was. And the combat shines during the boss battles!
The biggest hurdle in the OG game was the endgame where, without spoilers, you sort of have to repeat some content. And I've defended this moment for years against tons of people saying they dropped the game here, because the core set of fights you absolutely NEED to finish, can be rushed through in about an hour total, if you just turn encounters off and rush the bosses. But even at 50%, random encounters are going to at least double, maybe triple, that time - and it's going to add even MORE friction to people like me who actually wanted to go fight all the optional (but IMO interesting) boss fights each loop.
This is just an inferior version of the 3DS game, I'm convinced. What does this version add, some minigames? So what?

I’ve got an old 20hr save file that says lowering the encounter rate was not a good idea. I’m on my second play through and +50 seems to be the sweet spot.
It's also missing 3D, AR cards, and Street . And a proper cartridge. Stick with the superior 3DS release.
I can’t say I’m a devoted Square-Enix follower, but every now and then I’ve been interested in their announcements. However it seems they almost always find a way to pour water on people’s excitement. There’s always something.

Honestly having played it at the Switch 2 event I'd rather stick with the 3DS version. It's a low effort port that's just been blown up to HD and it looks really bad visually. Lacking the western release's QoL features is also a big miss.
Random encounters need to go. I've said it already on this site but there are absolutely no good reasons for random encounters in our day and age. I still haven't played Octopath because of them. I skipped the last Mario rpg because of the insane decision to implement random encounters in a series that did not have them. I've played bravely default though. Thanks to that feature. Just get rid of it, it's terrible, it brings nothing to the table, it's just an excuse of a design.
Nice
Even nicer.
But yeah, the QoL options introduced in Bravely Default (primarily the encounter rate and the battle speed) make going back to traditional JRPGs an absolute slog at times.
Just stirring up controversy where there is none.
I trust them to make an awesome switch version. It doesn't have to have absolutely everything the same.
You can easily achieve an encounter rate of zero by not purchasing the game.
Sounds like all the complaining works. Hopefully the complaint about it being a game key card works too.
I think I'll just turn my chances of encountering this game down to 0%.
I work full time and am approaching middle age. I approve of this.
Why did SE wait so long to correct this?
Also, sheesh, people sure are being negative about this release...
Shame it doesn't have a 100% on cart toggle.
why cant games be like 7th saga a fight every 2 seconds nothing wrong with that..i like a challenge..
Probably going to pick this up enjoyed second on the 3ds and never played the original
What a coincidence! With 0% of the game being on the cartridge, my likelihood of encountering and subsequently purchasing this game has also plummeted to 0%!
@TheExile285 That's all people do now. Negative negative negative. Also rush reporting without waiting for the facts to come out.
if you don't want to use the toggle, then don't
I'm confused, was he at PAX East? I was just there. I would have loved to bump into him. Also, did I miss a chance to check out the Switch 2?
Removed - off-topic
@johnedwin you can decide that here. It's just player preferences.
NL strikes again. You reported the opposite before you had all the information and are now backtracking after everyone already forgot.
Nice try.
Oh, excellent. Weird it wasn't shown off before but glad to hear the toggle's still there.
Also this constant performative, "Key card key card key card," flood of comments on every single third party release is getting absolutely exhausting.
@jwfurness Don't worry. The feature wasn't removed. Nintendolife just had to make an article out of speculation asap.
@IronMan30 all the negativity and ‘controversy’ is getting exhausting. Do they not like gaming any more? Nintendo? Their jobs?!
Lol Switch 2 coverage on this site has been so overly negative, finding problems where they don't exist before knowing all the facts.
I guess people who don't want to play the game can have fun now.
This is literally the most pointless remaster. It barely looks better than the original, takes out features, it's a gamekey card, and would have been a golden opportunity to bundle it with the sequel but it's only the first game.
@Axecon agreed. I still want it, because I'd love to play on an HD or 4K screen, but it's a shame they didn't include Bravely Second. By itself, it's not worth being a full-price game.
I'm going to be honest, I am really sick of hearing people complain about the game key card thing. Okay, you are disappointed. It adds nothing to any comment sections if that is the only thing you have to add. Come on guys.
@mohok Hearing that Nintendo is once again the biggest wrongdo-er here doesn't surprise me either. It's their biggest card or key card. And so every developer would be mad to go for anything but this new key card thing!
Taking away all the bonuses of digital games but just forcing us to go digital anyway... That sounds like the oldschool predator Nintendo we all knew before Reggie and Iwata stepped in!
(The one who stabbed their business partners so hard in the back it created PlayStation! 😂)
I want to buy this game physically on Switch 1 (with full game on cart).
Why is a 3DS remaster being pushed to Switch 2 (with lifeless game keys)?
I thought Square Enix had learned its lesson with abusing exclusivity over sales?
@garfreek Yeah this is very true. It's not really anything new.
This is probably my most anticipated Day 1 title on Switch 2. Disappointed it's not going to be on physical but I'll definitely be picking it up digitally.
