Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is home to several collectibles, and one of these is called a Star Piece! They’re scattered about the world for you to find, and you'll need as many of them as you can get in order to buy some of the best Badges in the game.

In this guide, you'll find everything you need to know about Star Pieces, including how many there are, where to spend them, and where to find all of them. So put on your red cap and get ready for a treasure hunt

What are Star Pieces?

Star Pieces are a collectible item that made their debut in the original Paper Mario. These return in the GameCube sequel and serve the same purpose — you can trade these for Badges to equip Mario.

Star Pieces have only appeared in the first two Paper Mario games so far.

How many Star Pieces are there?

There's a grand total of 100 Star Pieces to collect along your adventure. Grabbing all 100 of these is also vital for you to get 100% completion.

What do you use Star Pieces for?

You'll need Star Pieces in order to use Dazzle’s shop. He’s an NPC in the Rogueport Sewers who trades Badges for Star Pieces, and many of them are incredibly useful.

Have any Star Pieces been added to the Switch remake?

No, no Star Pieces have been added to the Nintendo Switch version of Thousand-Year Door. And all 100 Star Pieces are in the same location — only one has moved very slightly, but it's barely a few steps away.

Every Star Piece Location

We've got you covered for every single Star Piece in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Below, we've broken these down by chapter, so they should be easy for you to collect as you progress through the story.

Prologue Star Pieces

You'll be able to get six Star Pieces in the Prologue of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Location	How To Get	Image
Rogueport	Head to the east end of the map and check behind the crates to find the Star Piece.
Rogueport	Head to the very back of the central plaza and the camera will rotate. Enter the house all the way to the left and check behind the mattress to find the next Star Piece.
Rogueport	In eastern Rogueport, there’s a very normal-looking wall made of bricks right by the entrance. Walk north in the middle of it and you’ll find it’s an illusion! Follow this area around until you see some crates at the end of the area. Hop on top of the crates and you’ll find this Star Piece.
Rogueport	Head inside the inn and go upstairs. Exit through the door here and you’ll find yourself on a walkway. Follow it to the top of Zess T.’s house and you’ll find the next Star Piece.
Rogueport Sewers	A little ways into the Rogueport Sewers is a giant yellow block with an angry face. This Star Piece is hidden behind the block.
Rogueport Sewers	Head into the Rogueport Sewers from Rogueport itself and you’ll find a door that leads to the left. Enter it and check behind the pedestal to find this Star Piece.

Chapter 1 Star Pieces

17 more Star Pieces are available to collect in Chapter 1.

Location	How To Get	Image
Petal Meadows	When you enter Petal Meadows for the first time, you will see a tree near a Save Block. Hit this tree with your Hammer and the Star Piece will fall.
Petal Meadows	When you’ve entered the background to repair the bridge to Petalburg, head right after you press the blue switch and you’ll find a Star Piece on the hills.
Petal Meadows	Exit Petalburg to the east. Check the very first patch of grass here and you’ll find a Star Piece.
Petal Meadows	This one is in Petalburg in a floor next to the flower bulb character.
Petal Meadows	This Star Piece is in east Petalburg near the fence gate under a floor .
Hooktail Castle	In the room with the horizontally flipping stairs. You’ll need to stand on the big yellow block while using Koops’ shell to hit the switch. This will send the yellow block upwards while you’re standing on it, which lets you access to the Star Piece.
Hooktail Castle	In the horizontally flipping stairs room, except this time you’ll want to stand on the small purple switch at the top-right corner of the room. Do this, and you’ll be led to a door that takes you to a balcony containing a Star Piece.
Hooktail Castle	After making it to the second floor of Hooktail Castle, unlock the door and continue left to find two blue switches. Use Koops to press them both and then hop out of a nearby window. From there, head right
Hooktail Castle	In the third room of Hooktail Castle, which is the paper airplane room with the narrow walkways and broken bars. Take the yellow lift up and then carefully make your way to the other side of the room to find this Star Piece
Rogueport	After purchasing a lens for Zess T., head west and check behind the wall right in front of you. The Star Piece is hidden right behind it.
Rogueport	In the same area as the above Piece, head all the way to the left and you’ll find a trash can against the wall. Check behind the trash can.
Rogueport	In west Rogueport, check behind the tall pipe to find this Star Piece.
Rogueport	In east Rogueport, you’ll need to defeat or pay Gus to access this area. Use paper mode to slip between the walls here, and check behind the barrel.
Rogueport Sewers	After clearing Hooktail Castle, head back to the Thousand-Year Door room and slip through the bars. Jump on the spring, fly to the other side of the room in airplane mode, then slip through the bars again and enter the door to your left. The Star Piece is right behind the staircase.
Rogueport Sewers	The rest of this section’s Star Pieces are in the underground city area of the Rogueport Sewers. You can access this area by activating paper mode on a sewer grate in west Rogueport. The first Star Piece here is behind a pillar off to the right.
Rogueport Sewers	This Star Piece is behind a pillar to the left of this area near a house.
Rogueport Sewers	This Star Piece is in the room directly west of the city area. It’s behind a big platform on the lower level.

Chapter 2 Star Pieces

23 more Star Pieces are accessible during Chapter 2.

Boggly Woods	In the area to the right of the pipe that leads to the Great Tree, head through the black tree stumps and you’ll find this Star Piece at the end of the path.
Boggly Woods	Just left of the pipe that leads to Flurrie’s house is another Star Piece. It’s behind the fence.
Boggly Woods	In the third tree from the left of Flurrie's House. Give it a smack with your hammer to receive this Star Piece.
Boggly Woods	Head back to Flurrie’s house after clearing Chapter 2. Perform a ground pound in the bedroom to find a hidden Star Piece under a floor .
Great Tree	Below the twisty narrow path is a seemingly empty room with bushes and a Save Block. Inspect the bushes by the Save Block to find this Star Piece.
Great Tree	After all 101 Punies are trapped, enter the pipe to the right. When you exit, check behind this pipe to find another hidden Star Piece.
Great Tree	On your way out of the Great Tree, you’ll come across a room with a security door that needs to be unlocked and a pipe. This Star Piece is hidden in a nearby bush.
Great Tree	This Star Piece is in the room right above the first room of the Great Tree. Perform a ground pound near the pipe to find this Star Piece under a .
Great Tree	Head back to the black treasure chest where you were “cursed” with paper airplane mode. Ground pound here to reveal another Star Piece.
Great Tree	In the blue jail cell, perform a ground pound to flip over a containing this Star Piece.
Rogueport	This Star Piece is under a floor right in front of Professor Frankly’s house. Perform a ground pound to get it.
Rogueport	At the center of the map in central Rogueport, you’ll find another floor with a Star Piece hidden underneath.
Rogueport	Over at Rogueport Harbor, there is a floor against the wall with a Star Piece inside.
Rogueport	Head to central Rogueport’s back alley and then head to the right. Ground pound here to find another floor with a Star Piece in it!
Rogueport	In west Rogueport there is a floor right in front of the Pianta Parlor. Perform a Spin Jump here to get the Star Piece.
Rogueport	This floor is at the train station in western Rogueport. Perform a ground pound all the way to the left near the Orange Toad for this one.
Rogueport	This Star Piece is right behind a warp pipe (GameCube) / just right of the warp pipe (Switch) at the western Rogueport train station.
Rogueport Sewers	After visiting the Great Tree, ground pound in the room with the pipe to reveal a floor containing this Star Piece.
Rogueport Sewers	Head back to the black treasure chest where you were “cursed” with paper airplane mode. Ground pound here to reveal another Star Piece.
Rogueport Sewers	At the south end of the Thousand-Year Door room is another floor . Perform a ground pound here to find the Star Piece.
Rogueport Sewers	Near the exit pipe to Rogueport in the pit is a floor . Ground pound here for another tricky Star Piece.
Rogueport Sewers	In the city area of the sewers is a lift that slowly moves up and down. Take the lift, enter the house on the left, and perform a ground pound for another floor Star Piece.
Hooktail Castle	Head all the way back to Hooktail Castle. In the room with jail cell bars, there is a floor in the leftmost cell.

Chapter 3 Star Pieces

Only 13 more Star Pieces are accessible in Chapter 3, and most of these are in the new areas.

Glitzville	The first Star Piece in Glitzville is under a floor directly south of the landing spot.
Glitzville	The next Star Piece is behind the top-right plant heading up the stairs to the Glitz Pit.
Glitzville	At the east end of town is a juice shop. Hop behind the counter and head left to uncover this Star Piece.
Glitzville	Check behind the phone booth in the southwest corner of town for this Star Piece.
Glitzville	This one is on the roof of the juice shop, which you can access by performing a ground pound on the nearby blue switch. Then, use Koops’ shell to retrieve the Star Piece from underneath the sign.
Glitz Pit	In the lobby in the corner next to some stairs, perform a Spin Jump to flip over the and claim the Star Piece.
Glitz Pit	After getting the storage key, enter the storage room and ground pound right in front of the door to find a hidden Star Piece.
Glitz Pit	After obtaining the second storage key and destroying the big box with Super Hammer, check behind the crates for this hidden Star Piece.
Glitz Pit	After you break through the air duct and enter Grubba’s office, check behind the plant in the bottom left corner of the room to find this Star Piece.
Glitz Pit	Inspect the desk drawer of Grubba’s office to get this Piece.
Rogueport	After obtaining Yoshi as a partner, Flutter Jump over the gap in east Rogueport and hop up the crates. The Star Piece is under a near the barrels.
Rogueport	Right after you obtain the above Star Piece, use Yoshi’s Flutter Jump to go across the gap onto the roof. This Star Piece is behind the nearby chimney.
Rogueport Sewers	Slip through the grates in west Rogueport and use Yoshi to Flutter Jump across the gap. Enter the pipe and make it through this small platforming section to find this Star Piece.

Chapter 4 Star Pieces

There are only 10 more Star Pieces available in Chapter 4.

Twilight Town	This Star Piece is hidden away in some grass at the south of Twilight Town. It’s near a decayed tree.
Twilight Town	You'll find this one behind a house at the west end of Twilight Town.
Twilight Town	This Star Piece is behind a fence in the second part of Twilight Town near a tree and some barrels.
Twilight Trail	After obtaining the crouch roll ability from Twilight Town, roll under the fallen tree and check behind it to find this hidden Star Piece.
Twilight Trail	After the above Star Piece, head right, and you’ll find a tree. Use Flurrie to blow it away and then check behind the pipe to get this one!
Creepy Steeple	The first Star Piece here is behind the wall – and the wall in question is behind the Save Block shown here.
Creepy Steeple	This Star Piece is east of the main room in a floor near where the staircases appear.
Creepy Steeple	In the well by Creepy Steeple, you’ll eventually ground pound through a into the next area. Check between the windows to the right and you’ll find this Star Piece behind them.
Creepy Steeple	In the room with the parrot, ground pound the floor to find this Star Piece under a floor .
Creepy Steeple	At the beginning of Creepy Steeple is a hole in the wall. Roll inside and check behind the table to find a tricky hidden Star Piece.

Chapter 5 Star Pieces

You'll be able to get 11 more Star Pieces in Chapter 5.

Keelhaul Key	At the start of Chapter 5, you’ll be given control at the shoreline of Keelhaul Key. In this first area, head to the northeast and ground pound to find this Star Piece.
Keelhaul Key	Once you make it to the village, head out into the water and you’ll find this Star Piece lying in it,
Keelhaul Key	This Star Piece is behind the rocks on your way out the east exit of the village.
Keelhaul Key	As soon as you leave the village through the east exit, check the grass right by the beginning of this area to find another Star Piece hidden inside.
Keelhaul Key	This Star Piece is behind a big root you’ll as you climb up Keelhaul Key’s mountain area.
Keelhaul Key	After saving iral Bobbery from the embers, head into the water and check near the plant to find a hidden Star Piece.
Pirate's Grotto	Right after you drop to the lower level with the fire enemies and the small sunken ship, you can find this Star Piece in the foreground on a platform by itself.
Pirate's Grotto	This Star Piece is hidden in a floor . After the second Save Block, hop up and use Bobbery to hit the switch. This floor will be right in front of you when you enter the next room.
Pirate's Grotto	In the storage room with the red switch, use Koops’ shell to raise the platform while you’re standing on it. Then hop on the box to the left and wait for it to ascend. Head south into the open barrel to find the Star Piece.
Pirate's Grotto	In the room with all the flying Buzzy Beetles, ground pound the floor in the very center of the room. You may need to take out all three of the enemies.
Rogueport	After you return to Rogueport Harbor from Keelhaul Key, head to the right and transform into boat mode. Loop around to the left and you’ll find a small area with some furniture. Check behind the barrels.

Chapter 6 Star Pieces

Another 11 Star Pieces are available from Chapter 6.

Excess Express	Go to Cabin 004 and perform a ground pound to find a Star Piece hidden under a floor .
Excess Express	Return the stolen pot to the chef and you’ll receive a Star Piece as your reward!
Excess Express	This Star Piece is inside the nightstand drawer in Cabin 008.
Excess Express	This one is under a floor in the engine room.
Excess Express	After you catch Zip Toad, he’ll give up all the goods he stole. Give the Shell Earrings back to their owner in the car with the item shop and you’ll receive a Star Piece.
Riverside Station	In the area with the rotating gears and the nearby key, there is a Star Piece hidden behind the pedestal on the ground.
Poshley Heights	This Star Piece is hidden behind a foldable chair to the left of Poshley Heights’ first screen.
Poshley Heights	Hidden under a floor right in front of the train station is another Star Piece.
Poshley Heights	Head into the hedge fence on the right and then walk north to find another tricky Star Piece hidden inside.
Poshley Heights	Go to Poshley Heights’ second screen and check behind the nearby hedge fence for another Star Piece.
Rogueport Sewers	In the room that leads to Petal Meadows, perform a Spring Jump near the pole at the beginning of the room. Head right, enter the pipe, and then enter the house to find this Star Piece in a hammock.

Chapter 7 Star Pieces

The final 9 Star Pieces become available during Chapter 7.

Fahr Outpost	Directly west of the pipe in the very first room is a floor containing a Star Piece.
Fahr Outpost	On the second screen, you’ll find a Star Piece hidden behind a bush.
Fahr Outpost	Just as you’re headed to the village, check behind one of the walls to find a hidden Star Piece.
Fahr Outpost	Once you get to the village, you’ll find this Star Piece hiding behind another wall.
Fahr Outpost	Next to the cannon in the center of the village is a floor . Perform a ground pound to reveal the Star Piece.
Fahr Outpost	Enter the rightmost house in the village next to the cannon. Then, check behind the boxes to find the last Star Piece in Fahr Outpost.
Moon	When the X-Naut Fortress becomes visible in the background, blow up a nearby rock to find the pipe that leads there. Southeast of that pipe is a Star Piece hidden behind a smaller rock.
Moon	In the X-Naut Fortress, head to Sublevel 2 and enter the room with the test tubes and the white X-Naut. From there, Spring Jump into the top-right corner of the room and then check the southwest corner of the corridor for this hidden Star Piece.
Moon	In the X-Naut Fortress after obtaining the cog, head to the crane room and use the controls to retrieve the Star Piece.
