We are rapidly approaching the big Switch 2 Direct on 2nd April, and Nintendo is ensuring the hype train is fully stocked and ready to leave the station as it has just shared a new image of the console via the Nintendo Today app.
Now, the vast majority of us will likely see this image tomorrow when the regional clocks tick over to the 'One Day To Go' message that the app has been counting towards in recent days, but thanks to the magic of timezones, those in Japan have already caught a glimpse of the fresh snap.
Rather than wait until our region hits the right time slot, the image was quickly shared to social media (thanks to @Stealth40k on BlueSky for this one), so we've managed to sneak a peek ahead of time.
ittedly, there's nothing particularly revolutionary about the image itself, which showcases the hybrid in its three different play modes, but after so many months of silence from Nintendo, we'll take whatever fresh info we can get. One thing that did catch our eye was the 'tabletop' mode on the right and the 'mouse mode' Joy-Con next to it. , Nintendo hasn't confirmed anything mouse-y for the time being, but the recent patents and this snap drive the likelihood ever upwards.
For those who haven't been checking out the Nintendo Today app in recent days, daily updates have been counting towards the Switch 2 Direct with a short video capped off with 'X Days To Go'. The full video for 'One Day To Go' has already been shared on Reddit (it's just a small zoom on the above image, don't worry), but it won't be long until all regions have it natively.
Is there anything else noteworthy that you've spotted in the above image? How excited are you for Wednesday? Let us know in the comments.

This console looks really nice, neat new pictures of it! Definitely seems to imply mouse controls, if it wasn’t obvious enough already.
#excited (nothing else to say at this time)
Mamma mia!
Let’s-A GO!
Really looking forward to the Direct and what Nintendo is cooking up. Not much longer now!
looks great! nice to see the mouse functionality on the right hand side featured
That counter on NLife makes it sooooo hard to wait haha. But i love it.
This picture is def proof for the Joy con/mouse as we all speculated.
(Strategie games here we come)
Also the console itself looks really smooth.
this is gonna be so epic im very hyped
Grande momento per chi tifa Nintendo, mamma mia!
Showing a joycon in a memetically speculated sideways "mouse" on April 1 of all days sure feels like a choice.😄 And might as well be one, because an alternate implication is indeed a feature limited to one mode out of three, consequently risking the implementation ratio on par with the current generation's IR camera.
@Novamii Pikmin could really take advantage of a mouse since at it's root it's an RTS. I hope we get control options for the game, so you could use mouse controls or usual joy-stick controls.
Many Nintendo series could take advantage of mouse controls, like Pikmin (as you said), Mario Maker, WarioWare, and Metroid Prime. I bet they'll make a new game specifically for this feature as well.
hope Nintendo makes up some wild nonsense for April's fool Day to rock the boats
Two days left!
...And be very cautious about tomorrow in the meantime.
I think I'm more hyped for this launch than any console since the Dreamcast.
#highexpectations
I think this is VERY strongly hinting at a 3D Mario (which we all kind of assumed was going to be there anyways) which means this is the first time a Mario game has been available at launch since...64? Could be some strong foreshadowing of a really revolutionary title. I was always bewildered why Nintendo didn't wait to launch Mario Wonder with the Switch 2 (as it would have been received incredibly well.)
The only good reason NOT to wait to launch Mario Wonder with Switch 2 would be if they had an amazing 3D title ready.
Surely this will be the case but I really hope that any game with touchscreen controls work with the mouse mode right out of the box.
@TheBoilerman More hyped than Switch 1? What’s different this time around?
I’m still hyped for the Dreamcast…
To be released in December! 😂
Jokes aside, I hope we get to play it sooner than later.
Does anyone else feel like a joycon wouldn't be comfortable to hold as a mouse for a long period? I hope I'm wrong
@bleeflooflah I think Nintendo Life super imposed Mario on to the image?
@bleeflooflah what about this is hinting at a 3D Mario??
OK can someone please explain to me how this is a picture of the Switch 2 and not a barely even pretending to be real life mock up? Where did they place this Switch 2 that the horizontal and vertical white surfaces perfectly blend into one another? Is this a rubber room inside an insane asylum?
I'm sorry, but for 2 months now people keep saying that they've "seen the Switch 2" but I have yet to see any image that looks like it's a picture of an actual real physical object, every single pic I've seen looks like CG to me.🤷♂️
@rjejr They're floating. Obviously it's all CG.
I'm hoping we'll get a built in browser this time we can use. It's always been there, only called in certain circumstances on Switch 1, but with mouse capability it would make sense as a feature. Maybe that C button stands for "content", as in media content and other stuff? Looking forward to this Direct.
Sale on original model when?
No pack in game. Just an actual sale, please.
@BTB20 I thought levitation was the new switch 2 gimmick 😂
"Showcasing the hybrid in its three different play modes"
I've still yet to see anyone use the Switch in its 'kickstand' mode in real life, only in their adverts. Maybe others have much better eyesight than me but I've never found this of mode of any use!
It's the final countdown! Here we go!
Microsoft putting Windows 11 on the next Xbox, could the Switch 2’s mouse signify a Nintendo OS? Do your taxes on Switch 2.
@Skunkfish
At the time, I felt like the Switch was gimmicky and an unknown quantity. The wii U and 3ds had failed to impress, so I was only vaguely interested in what Nintendo would do next to bury themselves.
Now I know better.
@Coversnail My grandkids play Smash all the time like that when they bring it over, rather than bringing the dock and all.
This console better have 4K or Nintendo is gonna be left in the dust
I can’t wait to see the different joycon colors (green please!!). But I am less inclined to buy as many this gen.
Lots of grey and black.
It's a Switch with mouse . I think they could of added mouse via bluetooth on the Switch and used a real mouse. But anyway. I guess it will be cool that it is more powerful?
I can't wait to see any Switch 2 exclusives in action.
Please let Bluetooth headphones be usable from day one 🤞🏻
I happen to have Wednesday off (amazingly) and will be watching the Direct LIVE so I can't wait!!!
I was so stoked for this but then I bought a PS5 Pro. Yes, I know they are totally different systems, but I already have an OLED Switch loaded with games so its gonna take some impressive graphics or some cool new innovations for me to dip into a new console. I was waiting for Metroid but can play that on the Switch 1. Will still watch with great interest but its hard to be blown away by graphics after playing the Pro (rarely play my Switch in handheld).
@WarioInAHardees Its Mario in front of a Switch 2 lol. And its SPECIFICALLY an image from Mario Odyssey. Not many caught it at the time, but Miyamoto wore a tshirt on Jimmy Falon before Switch was unveiled of Mario in his Odyssey samurai outfit. They like doing teases like that.
@Medic_alert What difference does it make?
You can't see what games look like playing - brightness, screen glare, etc, - on a CG image.
You can't get dirt, finger prints and smudges on a CG image.
You can't judge size from a CG image of an object in a white space.
You can't really tell the color and gloss of a real object from a CG image.
If you're blind and you're getting all of this info via it being read to you, I apologize, I mean no offense. It probably doesn't matter to a blind person if it's a picture of a real object or just a CG imagining.
@BTB20 Well I know that and you know that but people keep acting like they've seen photos of a real object. It's weird. No wonder we'll all lose our jobs to AI some day.😝
@bleeflooflah the folks at Nintendo Life put Mario in front of the picture themselves, not Nintendo. The official picture is seen below in the post on this page.
Right now, the “C” button obviously stands for “Chugga chugga choo choo.”
All aboard the hype train! 🚂😆
@bleeflooflah that’s not from Nintendo, that’s something Nintendo Life added
Has anyone figured out how the Nintendo Today app decides the what it does and doesn't show you on a given day? Cause I do not have that
Looking nice, I hope to see some great new features with this Switch 2.
I hope they show an alternate/lighter colour scheme. Not really a huge fan of what it has going on at the moment.
@The-Chosen-one Same on the counter! So exciting though
MARIO WITH NO CAP???
Now that is unusual. Hmmm..!
Really loving the all black sleek look. Looks pretty thin too!
@Coversnail I’ve literally just been playing my Switch in kickstand mode on the dining table while I was pumping some weights (grrrrrr!). I played a bit of Shantae in between rounds. ittedly I don’t do it often, and I could just as easily done it in handheld mode, but I do like it from time to time.
@nhSnork
"a feature limited to one mode out of three, consequently risking the implementation ratio on par with the current generation's IR camera."
I know what you are saying (and im hugely skeptical of the feature personally) but what modes would disallow use of the mouse-con? 🤔
@bleeflooflah The Mario graphic was made by nintendolife to obscure the image and get clicks on the article lol. In this particular case it's a little irritating and confusing. Although i agree with you about launching with 3D mario
I reckon we will see a Fire Emblem RTS that uses the mousecon.
@-wc-
I imagine handheld mode since tabletop mode and TV mode would work with a theoretical "mouse" mode.
though in handheld mode you would be able to use the touchscreen for anything which would require the (speculated) mouse feature.
to be fair though while its yet to be seen if the mouse mode is real i dont think the inability to use it in handheld mode would rule it out since after all not being able to use a feature in one of the modes didnt stop the touchscreen.
still only about a day or so until confirmation on whether it is a mouse.
@Mgalens
I hadnt even thought of the touchscreen, thats a good catch. though, i will say the other 's point remains: more games would the touchscreen if it werent limited to one mode of operation. (incidentally, this is also my devil's advocate argument for mouse mode: that it brings "touch" essentially to tv play... nevermind that wii already did it so well all those years ago.)
and anyway: you totally could use a mouse in handheld mode. 😂✌️
The bigger size of the joycon makes me think this will be much more comfortable to play.
That being said I hope the OG pro controller is still compatible…
@bleeflooflah The Wii U was launched with New Super Mario Bros. U
@-wc-
yeah it does feel like some games do feel like touchscreen would just be the perfect fit but oddly dont. while for the most part i preffer using buttons for menus and whatnot because im more used to it when it comes to things like creative tools such as the stage creator in smash i preffer the touch option.
if it is a mouse mode it would be good for things like Mario maker when in TV mode (since TV mode is more "social" and sometimes its fun to watch someone create or make a stage together) or something like as an option if square ends up doing something like putting FFXIV on it.
at least we will finally get more info soon.
Think of all the old school RTSs that would be so much fun on this!
Welcome back, Commander. RA2 on Switch?! Calling it now.
New XenoBlade, new Zelda and new Mario coming in the first year ...
@-wc- not disallow as much as complicate beyond pragmatic usability. Handheld mode goes without saying, but even TV mode seems rather unwieldy outside specific setups (the ones that birthed the aforediscussed functionality in the first place), and a player finding time to seat themselves before such a setup would likely take the opportunity to mop up some Steam backstead of a Switch 2 one. Touchscreen is a different beast, a staple feature since NDS that even other handhelds like Vita and Deck couldn't up on, and comfortably replaceable with stick controls nowadays when even many strategy games are benevolently grid-based (although there are a few oddballs like Severed that rely on the touch to the point of blatantly not ing TV mode)... and controller sticks obviously don't require a flat surface at hand. A more tangible argument in favour of the "mousecon" would be the SNES mouse which actually saw a decent share of (compared to the IR camera, at least😅) - but then again, it probably didn't face the same first world concerns back when the short controller cords tended to have the players perched on the floor before the TV anyway.
Honestly, what I'd rather see this whole buzz turn out to be instead is enhanced motion control tech which was already a sensible mouse alternative in the Wii days, ed on to various extents and viable for both TV and tabletop modes. No matter how many people see a mouse in the trailer's joycons sliding around like figure skating stars, awkwardly moving one along the sofa in the vicinity of your posterior is almost guaranteed to leave a less poetic impression. Take it from someone who occasionally tried to use his laptop mouse that way.😆
@Tweaknmod nothing prevents stuff like Red Alert as it is. Heck, N64 had a Command & Conquer game. And even a StarCraft port!
@nhSnork
thanks for the reply! I can safely say that we see 100% eye to eye about this, completely agree with everything youve said. 👍✌️
(I've tried playing halflife 2 on my living room tv with a mouse and keyboard enough times to know that it's not really worth it. two times.)
We’re reaching the end of the homestretch now! I have actually been wanting the Switch 2 since like, 2023 or 2024, I’m not sure since when, but we’re almost here!
It does seem to hint at the mouse functionality. Hopefully there will be more innovations like that to make it more than just a bigger and slightly stronger Switch.
@Novamii
"That singular sideways joy-con seals the deal. (...) On the subject of games that'd work great with mouse, I can't believe Pikmin never crossed my mind!"
Playing Pikmin with a Joycon 2 as a mouse would be interesting.
I loved the stylus control for Pikmin 3 on Wii U.
and luckily
no stupid joke
(I hate April Fools Day)
I love the way this new console truly seems to be a 'simple' Switch 2.
Bring it on, my wallet is ready.
AGHHHHH JUST TWO MORE DAYS TO KNOW HOW MUCH LONGER I CAN WAIT I CAN WAIT I CAN-
Did anyone else completely forget the Nintendo Today app exists?
@Medic_alert "for what was just a new picture"
But that's my whole point, it isn't a picture. 🤪
I mean I suppose it's a picture if you call everything a picture. Crayon drawing, finger painting, fine art, they'd all be "pictures" of the Switch 2. Guess I'm just used to my new hardware consoles having something actually hard involved when they show it to me.
Though I suppose I could go back and watch a lot of old new hardware presentations and see if those guys are on stage holding a picture of the new hardware. 😂
Look, I understanding marketing is going to do it's thing and we're going to get a lot of funky stuff like this, which is fine, Apple has probably mastered it, but I'd like to, at some point, see a Nintendo employee holding something that's real. After I see some people looking at a real Switch 2 they can do all the finger painting they want, but I want to see the real thing first. Two months of people talking like they've "seen a Switch 2" when it's all just been CG. 🤷♂️
Please just let me order it without having to take off work.
So excited for Wednesday!! Ahh what will I do with myself until then 😳
Wow, is it me or is the console bigger than the last time we saw it? Anyway, it just seems bigger now that we're looking at it from a distance.
Also, there have been some rumours about development kits not being avaliable for many developers yet, which suggest they must be more recent than it seemed. They also strangely don't seem to be compatible with 4K...
Right now, my only concern with the console is how powerful enough it's going to be to make it future proof at least. Consistenly updating the specs after years of internal delays make a lot of sense, and I don't really know if these "reports" are actually true. Worse than that, these rumors always seem to affect anybody's expectations going forward, it's better to forget about them and instead the basics of what to expect from a next-gen console
Now we can see just how niche Blue Sky is. The same posted it on X and it has nearly 10,000 likes. Has 300 on Blue Sky. Anyways, it's a much more mature looking Switch. I love it.
@Automated_Unit_4937 you might get banned for criticizing blue sky… 🤫 u know how they are…
So far not a fan of the size of Switch 2… it’s no longer a portable system… just imagine how much space this will take up in ur backpack or bag once you put a case around it…. It’s no longer ideal for casual portable gaming.. i kinda think Nintendo lost sight of what made the original Switch special its balance between home console & portable gaming. Switch 2 just tooooooo big.
Hopefully this doesn't happen with anouncements from the actual direct... who am I kidding? Nintendo has slipped up before, but not even they can be THAT stupid.
Is this classified as a "leak"? 🤣🤭
Seriously, I'm far more interested in features, games and a release date than the Switch 2's physical appearance. We know it's a Switch with obviously a lot more power. That part is all a yawn now. Roll on to 2 April!
Cool. This is why I don't need to the app. The entire world announces every single thing that happens in the app, I just have to check in on sites like this and save myself the trouble of sending Nintendo my data.
@Automated_Unit_4937 With Nintendo’s Today! app, Nintendo may be positioning themselves to completely pull out of X, BlueSky and all others. Makes sense as they won’t have to pay X for the checkmark and Nintendo will have full control over their media coverage. A more DIRECT mode of engagement for their fans. We don’t need FB, X, BS; at least I don’t. It’s all drama. I do like the mature look but I also hope Nintendo comes out with some nicely colored button variations of this console.
I agree with other comments about not wanting to pay $70 for a Switch 2 edition of an older game. Having said that, I think a BOTW-TOTK Switch 2 Edition bundle would be so awesome.
@Clyde_Radcliffe GameXPlain said the mockup Switch 2 JoyCon felt natural to use as a mouse
@Koda1000
I think Nintendo can afford a checkmark. Also their Switch 2 promo vid from January got like 40+ million views on X in a couple days. I really doubt they would give that up.

About the controller from Nintendo Switch 2 it is like the Nintendo 64 controller like big. Nintendo 64 had big controller. İ feel like Nintendo Switch 2 is like Nintendo 64. İt have almost the same feeling. Nintendo Switch 2 is bigger with console, dock and with the controller. Everything looks better than the Nintendo Switch 1. Now İ want to see the specs.
Im glad I'll be off. Pretty excited. Going to watch it w my six year old.
@Coversnail I use it in tabletop mode when on holiday. I use a folding stand, as the viewing angle on its own isn’t very comfortable. With the joy on grip it’s like playing on a mini tv!
Looks like two different sizes and a mini
lol, for some reason this is reappearing at the top of the site for me
