Yes, friends. We've spent the past few days pushing and pulling at our new Switch 2s as we get to figuring out just what this baby is really capable of. And, well, it seems as though it's capable of some quite twisted stuff.
Or at least a bit mixed up, as it turns out you can actually mix and match your Switch 1 and Switch 2 Joy-Con as working pairs and get stuck into playing games and browsing the Switch 2 console menus in the manner of someone wearing two completely differently-sized gloves.
There's no real point to it - unless you can't find the Joy-Con 2 you're looking for or someone else is using it. Indeed, we hadn't even thought to check until we saw the r/NintendoSwitch post hanging below this sentence:
Not wanting to simply take u/iOvercompensate's word without investigating a little further (no offence, we're just massively paranoid from existing in this timeline), we can confirm that we have achieved the same result. We were never in doubt.
In order to do the same, for whatever reason (maybe you've got relatives over and nobody is speaking anymore - a party trick might ease hostilities!), simply jump into the controller settings on Switch 2, then go to change your grip order, then press 'L' and 'R' to detect the Joy-Con you wish to mix. Ta-da!
Now. Does it work the other way, though? Can you go out and buy some fancy Switch 2 Joy-Con to use on your OG Switch?

Eh...no. No, you cannot. Silly us.
Feel like using two different Joy-Con to play games on Switch 2 so that you can refer to yourself as a 'gamer visionary' in the staff canteen/alone in the tub? Let us know in the comments!

We got FrankenJoy-Cons before GTA VI.
In any case, I hope Switch 1 controllers will continue to be ed for most Switch 2 games, especially with the amount of drifting Joy-Cons I have in my possession. 🤦🏻♂️
Cartridge taste tests, vent smelling, Joy Con adultery?! I'm afraid to see what's the next thing someone will do with the Switch 2 hardware!😮
@AllBLK Funny you shpuld say that, there's a video of one being SMASHED doing the rounds.
I'll get my coat
fancy, this is how my family will share joy con 2s equally probably until i get another pair sigh 😔
Pretty funny that this is possible even though it isn't particularly useful and recommended - you could technically do this if you're giving a Joy-Con 2 to a second person (you shouldn't give them a Joy-Con 1 with its smaller SL and SR buttons, especially without the wrist strap which alleviates that) and you don't want to use the other Joy-Con 2 sideways, but I'd say it would be better if you used both Joy-Cons 1 yourself then to avoid the discrepancy in size between hands!
Could be useful in sports if you are using the leg strap (leg strap for switch 1 joy con and switch 2 joy con in hand)
Could see myself using the right OLED joycon for MK because I prefer the triggers there for drift.
You buried this way down at the end when it should have been in the title. 😝
"Eh...no. No, you cannot. Silly us."
Haven't we known literally for months now that Switch Joycon would work on the Switch 2? This article really only needed to exist if Switch 2 Joycon also worked on Switch, 🤷♂️
I’ve experienced a nuisance with the new joy con controllers, something that bugs me slightly. And it’s the size or positioning of the analoge stick on the right joy con. It was difficult for me to do the grab in soul calibur two, which requires the B and Y. The analoge stick prevented me from doing so easily, it was in the way.
Am I the only one experiencing this?
I assume you can't actually physically connect them, though?
I finally got pink Joycons a year ago and wish I didn't have to go to boring black when I eventually get the Switch 2.
Actually, there is a point to it, as the Switch 2 joycons are pretty unergonomic, but at the moment there aren't any ergonomic third-party alternatives available yet... So if you still want to use mouse mode with one hand, you can at least have an ergonomic Switch 1 joycon alternative (like a Mobapad) in the other.
Actually, I’ve completely worn the rubber off my left joy con stick, but the right not nearly as much. So this isn’t completely useless info/idea. Don’t think I’d ever mix and match, but since you can buy joy con separately it’s not a bad feature to have
Would have been great to get a Joy-con 2 and pair to an original Switch, but highly unexpected if that were to happen. (and impressive if they'd pulled it off)
AND you can use normal old hdmi cable up to 1080 p AND you can use S1 charger connected to S2 dock to charge ( only if hdmi is diconnected from dock ) .
@rjejr This article is saying you can use a left Joy-Con 1 with a right Joy-Con 2.
Ok in itself that seems pointless, but I really appreciate to what degree they kept things compatible to Switch 1. Not having to buy multiple new controllers for the occasional multiplayer MKW is just great.
I prefer to use 1 joycon and half a pro controller.
AND you can attach jc2 upside-down AND you can flip your grip .
Thanks for the note on the switch 2 joycons on the switch 1, I was half considering buying a pair
@LinktotheFuture "use a left Joy-Con 1 with a right Joy-Con 2"
How does someone use a Joycon 1 w/ a Joycon 2? To do what? What do the two Joycon do together w/o a Switch 2?
The article says they are using a Switch 1 Joycon w/ a Switch 2, which we already knew. The Switch 2 Joycon is irrelevant unless you think it's somehow newsworthy that the Switch 2 Joycon work w/ the Switch 2? 🤷♂️
@rjejr No, the article is saying you can use a Switch 1 Joy-Con and a Switch 2 Joy-Con together.
There is no rhyme or reason to do so, but it is possible to do, just for s@#$s and giggles if nothing else.
Now this is investigative journalism!
(I’m not being facetious! Original source well credited, personally verified and written up with enough additional substance to stop the article from just being a glorified repost. Maybe not the hardest hitting news drop, but well worth reading!)
Hmmm... I was just wondering how I would play Ring Fit Adventure on Switch 2 and this article helped me answer my question. I'm sure inevitably there will be a Ring Fit Adventure 2 anyway.
