The updates don't end there, either. Nintendo has also rolled out multiple other updates for various other first-party Switch titles. These ones might not be quite as significant as the major upgrades here, but they're still worth checking out. You can find out more and see the full patch notes for these updates in the following story:
Will you be checking out any of these Switch 2 upgrades? Let us know in the comments.

Does any one know if the updates work with virtual game cards? Like can I transfer a game from my switch to switch 2 and use the enhanced update? If so that is gonna save me a lot of money.
@Ryu_Niiyama I never even questioned this. But it has to, right? Backwards compatibility and all that. The data (or whatever you call it) for the upgrades will just be accessible by Switch 2 but not Switch 1.
@Ryu_Niiyama all these updates are free, only zelda botw and totk are paid. If youre an NSO subscriber you also get them for free. Kirby and mario party are paid but thats because they have new content dlc
If LOZ: Link's Awakening & LOZ: Echoes of Wisdom, are locked at 60fps, HDR aside. Than that's a home run. I dropped out of LA on Switch because of how frequent those frame rate dips were. Drove me batty! I actually preferred the original, either on Super GameBoy, or the GBC version on the 3DS's Virtual Console. It's got a stable 60fps after all.
Plus, Super Mario Odyssey locked at 1080p(instead of the current 900p, which also drops as low as 720p depending on the area) and HDR will be really nice. Seaside Kingdom, I'm sure will look stunning in HDR on a QD-OLED.
I'm guessing the Smoother frame rate for SM3D World's Bowser's Fury applies to the 30fps cap in handheld mode, which should now run at 60fps on Switch 2. Also has HDR too. I haven't played much of Oddyssey or 3D World, so they're both going to be nearly brand spankin new experiences for me, and for the better on S2. Same thing applies to both Zelda's.
@speed_loafer I am hoping but the explanation on Nintendo’s FAQ seems vague so I hope perhaps someone will test and report back. I can’t use my switch 2 day 1 unfortunately. Otherwise I would test. I do hope it works as my plan is for my Switch 2 to be digital only but many of the updated games I have physically. So looking for the best way forward.
@Moonlessky Hi thank you for the response however that wasn’t my question. Sorry!
@Ryu_Niiyama ah Im sorry guess I didnt understand your question, but yes. All these updates are on the games themselves and when you load the virtual game card on a switch 2 you’ll get access to the enhancements. I plan on keeping my switch 1 so I’ll be using the virtual game cards a lot.
@NeonPizza You have yourself a hell of a launch lineup!
@Ryu_Niiyama If the goal of the virtual card system is to act like physical, then I think it's safe to assume you're good, i.e., no need to buy physical versions of titles you only have digitally for Switch 1 to play with the enhancements on Switch 2. Am I understanding your concern correctly?
Most of the updated games are ones I haven't touched in quite a while. I feel pretty spoiled for choices when it comes to Switch 2. It's a very unique launch for a Nintendo system. I'm glad I took the day off of work.
Why are they so quiet about the Xenoblades? Those would be my first choice for performance updates!
Looks like Super Mario Bros. Wonder got an update as well.
EDIT: Kirby Star Allies too. I’m guessing these are just compatibility updates.
Also:
Kirby’s Dream Buffet
Both N64 apps (to add rewind, button mapping, etc., I assume)
Pikmin 3 Deluxe
Super Mario 3D All-Stars
F-ZERO 99
Tetris 99
Favorites pinning for Echoes of Wisdom... W00t!

Favorites menu might motivate me to try giving Echoes of Wisdom another shot. Shame they didn't also add the ability to skip dialogue since the game never shutting up was my big problem with it but at least not having as tedious of menus will help.
They've made Echoes of wisdom playable?!! I can select favorites and just use those?!!! 😳🤎🤎🤎
@Lizuka I'm at the second dungeon and noped out! Maybe this will help it be a bit more fun! 🥳
And I thought it was my ADHD that made me groan at the amount of people to talk to, but you had it too?! Makes me feel better! 😂
I loved Echoes & Awakening!
Anyhoo, not sure I'll move all these across from my Switch 1. I may want to save space.
Pikmin 4?!
I'm excited to dive back into these, HDR for Odyssey and 3D World is going to be fantastic
Still hoping to see Pikmin 4 get a Switch2 edition, so that by the time I'm there on my playthrough through the entire series, I'll be enjoying it even more!
@Ryu_Niiyama if you have the physical game on Switch you would still need the physical game card to play on Switch 2. Virtual game cards are only for digital purchases.
Some of the games do not need an update as urgently!!!!! How about Bayonetta 3?!!!!!!! That’s one of the first party games that suffered super bad and Mario games were totally fine.
Wonder what the “improved image quality” means exactly.
Hope this means odyssey and 3D world in 4K!
(And if it does mean that, why did they pick NSMBU DX for this while also giving it no gameshare..?)
Sweet. Looking forward to having U Deluxe look prettier.
LOL @ GameBuilder
"As a result of improved processing speed, there may be some changes in behavior in games that were made previously on Nintendo Switch."
Time to learn how to deal with different frame rates, mini-devs
Coming soon : Multiple Screen Resolution handling!
@Znake
Bayonetta 3 runs at an unlocked framerate targeting 60fps and uses dynamic resolution scaling with a ceiling of 810p in docked and 480p in handheld.
Whilst the framerate should mostly lock to 60fps on Switch 2 with the beefier hardware, I agree it needs a resolution bump as 480p on a 1080p handheld screen/810p for docked is going to look blurry regardless of any upscaling used.
I’d like to know what the new resolutions actually are and what the frame rates will be versus a vague description “ Visuals: Optimized for the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs for improved image quality.”
finaly Nintendo added a option to favorite echoes on Echoes of Wisdom(it took these long, but at least i will not longer stress over echoes management).
It really nice that these games updated to have HDR, I think this is the reason on my tv most switch 3rd party indie games just looks worse compared to ps5 even though the resolution and framerate is the same.
I hope next is home theatre 5.1 sound update, most indie games (like shantae and the 7 sirens) only has stereo on switch while it has full 5.1 sound on ps5.
« Visuals: Optimized for the Nintendo Switch 2 display »
This is the first time we’re getting some clue about whether Switch 1 games will run natively in docked mode on the Switch 2’s handheld HD screen. And it seems that without a Switch 2 patch, they won’t. That SUXX so bad! Most Switch 1 games will just be stretched to fit the HD screen and look WORSE than on Switch 1. Nintendo… omg…
Oh yes dear, patch my switch up!
one of the games i would be interested to see get an update on switch 2 down the line is Mario maker 2 since it feels like mouse mode could in theory be good for when creating using docked mode (depending on how precise the mouse stuff is on switch 2)
Doubt I'll replay these myself anytime soon, but I'm looking forward to seeing all these improvements whenever I do so or at least watch others playing them - again, considering that these are the free upgrades they really went above and beyond (hope we'll see even more upgrades in the future no matter if free or paid although of course the former would be even better)!
@Ryu_Niiyama Yes of course, why wouldn’t you be able to?
What does this mean:
" Note: Does have local compatibility with Ver. 1.1.0. Does not have local compatibility with Ver. 1.0.0. Please be careful of the update version on each player’s system. "
Does this mean you can mess up the System/Game because N$2 updates are available on N$1?
They finally fixed the echoes menu, incredible
No nerf on Dr. Coyle? smh
What are the upgrades for botw and totk?
I must say the improvement with Pokemon Scarlet/Violet is definitely noticeable!
Super sharp resolution now and good FPS all around. No blurry stuttering mess anymore.
