GameCube returns next week as a Switch 2 'Nintendo Classics' exclusive and it will start life with SoulCalibur II.
These versions will include screen options – such as the ability to activate a retro CRT mode and you'll also be able to take advantage of suspend points, to save play at any time. Additionally, there's button remapping, online and local multiplayer options, and GameChat .
Nintendo has shared screenshots of each of these games on its Japanese and American websites, so here's a gallery:

As previously confirmed, Nintendo will be adding more games to the GameCube service in the future including titles like Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. If you want to enhance your experience, Nintendo will also be offering a wireless GameCube controller, which can be purchased from the My Nintendo Store.
The GameCube tier is part of the Switch Online + Expansion Pack hip which also includes other retro libraries like the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance.
Will you be checking out GameCube games on Switch 2? Let us know in the comments.

Wish games were in 16:9 though, multiple titles have patches by now.
Really looking forward to F-Zero GX. Between that and MKW, I'm going to be spending the most time I ever have playing racing games.
Wish the controller wasn't sold out. Never got the invite to shop for it early, either. Suspect it'll be a while before they don't sell out instantly, just like the N64 controllers.
I don't know why I'd wanna play wind waker on Nintendo switch 2 online when i can play it in full HD and widescreen on my Wii U as well as Twilight princess. I mean sure i won't have to break out my Wii U but I'd prefer the best looking version honestly. Don't see what's so difficult about offering a widescreen option for switch online.
Besides that they really need to consider letting us buy the games if we'd like. I mean charge 10 to 15 dollars a game and everyone is happy. Guess Nintendo doesn't want to make a few extra bucks. Oh well their loss.
Yup, those sure are Nintendo GameCube game screenshot on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for the Nintendo Switch 2 video game console.
I can't wait to play Soul Calibur 2 again. What a classic!
@Denoloco
I think F-Zero and Soulcalibur have a widescreen option you can select in game.
@Denoloco it happens but instead the games are just stretched out
I wish they’d put something good on there like animal crossing.
Yes I'll definitely be checking them out.
I only plan on buying Mario Kart to begin with (as it's part of the bundle I've ordered).... So these 3 game cube games will give me an 3 extra games that I've never played before
Well wavebird you have been summoned again…
Need to check the connection on my arcade sticks too.
Nope.
Not interested at all with gaming rental service.
I prefer playing actual GameCube games in disc on my Wii machine.
@N00BiSH I very much appreciate this simpsons deep cut reference. I suspect GameCube will be much like ‘the turkey’s a little dry’
I’m conflicted about GameCube. Wind waker and TP would be great, but as others have said, a HD remake is preferred. Which leaves just fzero gx, but honestly I’d rather play fast rmx.
GameCube probably needs some of the classics I missed like rogue squadron or metal gear twin snakes etc.
I will get the though for BotW, TotK and Kirby.
Still wish they were widescreen! Dolphin can do it properly, its possible to do!! Until then, unfortunately emulation is still the best experience
Crazy how long it took for GameCube to become “retro” for Nintendo. The N64 was prime for VC just 10 years after it’s release
@Truegamer79 Because the redone engine completely broke the cell shaded look.
Looks like the huds have been upscaled / updated.
@Anti-Matter fully agree, but I do think it's a nice option for those that don't have the original games/hardware and just want to try some of the classics without jumping through any hoops.
@eldersnake
I'm also not a fan of 1st party GameCube games as my GameCube games collection still very few and mostly 3rd party games with very few 1st party games that fit for me.
@eldersnake yes, my gamecube and n64 got destroyed in a house fire long ago and i never replaced them. Also, I may be in the minority, but I dont want a bunch of consoles and games everywhere. I prefer digital or minimum clutter so having this option on the current console is cool. I'll probably donate my switch to some local kid or school, one I see that everything moves to the switch 2 properly
@Truegamer79 absolute business mogul
@Anti-Matter cool
I'll be checking out my GameCube games on my GameCube.
I've been playing GameCube games via emulation for years on steam deck and this year on Retroid Pocket 5. Steam deck can run the Wii U HD Zelda with ease. RP5 can run it with some slowdown but it runs the original with HD textures and widescreen hacks better. I prefer RP5 as it is a little smaller than a switch lite and has an OLED screen, hall effect sticks. I'm also playing Wii, Wii U and Switch games on these devices. I own all of these games, so it is all legal, takes effort to extract the files and some tinkering but it results in a better experience than Nintendo's rental of old games and the drip drip drip. I will buy a Switch 2 as soon as they release that killer app but not to play GameCube games.
@timp29 Switch 2 upgrade for Kirby is not included in the Expansion Pack, it's just BotW and TotK
Does anyone know if the gamecube games will have the rewind feature?
Not next week… this week!! Very exciting!!
So looking forward to these GameCube games at launch and more whenever they come to NSO - most likely I'll start with SoulCalibur II or at most F-Zero GX because as much as I love Wind Waker I've already played it unlike the other two (will be great to have it ready on Switch 2 whenever I want to replay it, though)!
Still got my original copies of these I bought at the time (I'm old), but glad a new generation will have official access to them!
Looking forward to this. We take this for granted now, but you can also play these on the go.....
@presenttense eShop description only mentions save states so probably not.
@Anti-Matter
If you still have old Gamecube games at home and the possibility to play them, why would you need to use NSO Gamecube games? 🤷♂️
I, on another hand, don't have a Gamecube since ages, I don't necessarily NEED to play the games, but if I can play them for "free" with an original Gamecube controller... Why not?
Almost there guys, aaaalllllmost there.
These months in between have killed many a new magazine and website so....alllmost there! 😂
Still no option to hide the HUD though? No very OLED friendly is it?
There's a decent chance I will be spending a lot of my S2 time with the gamecube stuff at first.
I love Wind waker and F zero is amazing.
Really looking forward to these!
@Jack_Goetz any modern oled will dim the fixed hud elements. TV channels have a logo stuck on them for hours, makes no difference to the oled
Still have that always on logo...
Most of all GameCube games had native wide screen. Zelda Ww & TP, SoulCalibur, FZero, the Metroid Primes, Eternal Darkness, these had 16:9 for sure, I had a TV before LCD, a Sony Wega, that has the feature and the games had the feature, as well as progressive scan. These NSO releases should be in wide screen.
That UI is so obnoxious. Just give us the option for normal black borders Nintendo!
I am very interested, but my wife won't let me subscribe.
I still have my GameCube with a big collection of GameCube games and I’m still excited.
I own all these games already. I'll start getting more excited for a subscription to play games when the games aren't ones I've owned for years. I am a poor adult now and I stopped getting so many games midway through the Wii. So that's when I'll start caring about the games.
@SBandy1 Is that the "adjust logo brightness" setting you're referring to? Hmm, never thought of trying that if so! But wouldn't it run the risk of dimming the hud/interface etc as well?
@Koda1000 for sure. I had a widescreen 32 inch HD tv at that point with the cube. Even the NES was attached to it so I don't see having 4:3 at all. Stretched is fine.
@N00BiSH No they're not "stretched out." F-Zero GX and Soul Calibur had proper native 16:9 widescreen in the game settings which you can use on the GameCube NSO service too. People have played them on widescreen at the expos and they look great.
I love playing through old NES and SNES games once in a while, especially with the save and rewind features. But I find that older 3D games from the N64 and Gamecube eras have aged poorly. The good ones need remakes/remasters, imo.
@Suketoudara I was making a joke but okay
I hope it doesn’t take a year for the rest of the games announced to come to the service.
@Truegamer79
"I don't know why I'd wanna play wind waker on Nintendo switch 2 online when i can play it in full HD and widescreen on my Wii U as well as Twilight princess."
why would anyone argue with you on that point? 🤔
I'm anti NSO, anti subscription model as anyone, but i would speculate that there are NSO subscribers who lack the requisite hardware to take advantage of your solution. ✌️👍
changing the aspect ratio of a game just to avoid "black bars" is asinine. the game was designed for the aspect ratio of which it released!
furthermore 4:3 is better than 16:9 thank you. 🫥
I hope Nintendo Classics under NSO will carry over to the next 20 consoles. It will be a very sad day if Nintendo ever pulls the plug on it.
I never got my invite from Nintendo, but I kept checking the store for a GameCube controller and got lucky. Hopefully, it arrives soon after I get my Switch 2.
I love the GameCube. I still have my original GameCube hooked up to my 4K TV with a fantastic HD adapter that allows for scan lines.
It'll be nice to play some of my favorite games anywhere on Switch 2. I'm hoping we get some of the better 3rd party games.
@Michael0916 you can play Nintendo Switch Online games online with your Nintendo Switch.
You can’t play the GameCube games online.
And personally, I only ever have two consoles in active use; currently PlayStation 5 and Switch, soon to be Switch 2. While I do still enjoy playing retro games, I prefer to play retro games on my latest consoles. I could play Wind Waker HD in a few minutes on Wii U, but I just don’t care to play Wii U anymore. I will be playing it on Switch 2 next weekend instead.
@Koda1000 WW, TP, and Metroid Prime did not widescreen on GameCube.
Though the latter two do on the Wii ports.
Really, without exaggerating there's probably only about 5 titles that widescreen on GameCube.
Until Geist, PN03 (cough Capcom and Under The Skin for PS+ PS2 as well thanks), Cubivore or Eternal Darkness I don't care.
F Zero is nice, Chibi Robo is nice but otherwise eh. Wave Race Blue Storm I forget if was in list or not.
No interest in Pokemon but it being on there is something with how expensive it is.
I'd take something like Vexx (whatever happened with Acclaim's IPs) as well, Dr Muto (cough WB with your Midway IPs), or many others I'd like to see.
I'd take the COD games on GameCube, Activision wouldn't even bother there would they?
Give us Pitfall Lost Expedition. Won't happen, didn't for Xbox at all. Won't PS2 either I doubt.
I don't even care to use NSO anyway but I'd like to see them happen.
But plenty that could be offered on services but won't. I can Mister Mosquito, Battle Engine Aquila and more on PS2 PS+/buy digital license or want many PSP puzzle games that were never digital on PSP/Vita among many others and it won't happen so might as well physical or emulate instead. Or the DS versions of those available as well.
Actually where is Polarium for GBA on NSO? Rhythm Tengoku sure emulation can be hit and miss there but even still. They could have done official translation if possible too like they had some others released on Wii U oh well.
Unless some interesting third parties don't care. Even N64 so many 3rd parties I'd want but oh licenses, oh source code, oh those that don't care to use the IPs, might as well emulate or them physical as many third parties are too lazy to offer them.
I can’t wait to play these games in a few days. If anyone wants to play multiplayer check out my friend code on my profile page!
Now I will wait patiently for animal crossing and melee 🤞
@timp29 But this is another shortcoming of NSO: third-parties are continuing to pull back from it, and at this point I'm only expecting 85-90% first-party games, with a handful of third-party's thrown in for the novelty. Like we've seen with all the other Star Wars classics, Rogue Squadron/Leader will probably be saved for standalone ports.
And like you and other people have said, after seeing the huge difference between the HD version, I just want to play the HD remake instead. I missed out on the Wii U entirely, so I'll probably dip my toes into Wind Waker on NSO to experience it for the first time. However, I'm really only interested in the HD remakes for both Gamecube Zelda's.
Can't help but feel disappointed Nintendo is launching the Gamecube NSO app with Wind Waker, because the base version doesn't hold much value for me either. With that said, I'm excited to experience SoulCaliber II again for the nostalgia!
@Kiyata How is Wind Waker, Fire Emblem, Super Mario Sunshine, Pokemon XD, Luigi's Mansion, Pokemon Coliseum, and others not considered good enough for you?
Even though I won't be getting Switch 2 right away, hopefully by the time I do, they will add even more GCN games. Truth is, I've played all the games I wanted to play except for Skies of Arcadia Legends. It's a slim chance, but maybe Sega will find it in their hearts to allow it to appear.
Look forward to hopefully getting Wii virtual console on Switch 2. Would love to have Galaxy 2 on the system.
@Bass_X0
Good point about the ability to play Gamecube games online. 👍
3 great games.
Zelda The Wind Waker.
F-Zero GX.
SoulCalibur 2.
İ have never played The Wind Waker.
F-Zero GX is a great game İ love it but İ have only played this game by my friends home. One of my friends have this game and it was beautiful. We played multiplayer together 4 players. F-Zero X on the Nintendo 64 was great game too.
İ have little played SoulCalibur 2 by my same friend. Was great game too.
Issue is the rent system. I would have been happy to pay to own them. Not paying for some rented roms
For the most part I didn’t give a hoot about GameCube emulation… until I ed Super Monkey Ball. I would happily play that again any day of the week!
Really nice to have some gamecube stuff to play.. . controller is pre ordered as well since i just love the gc controller and purple is my favourite colour
sort of interesting they do a lot with the crt controller, sicne the GC generation is the first on which the games are not really pixel arty anymore... f-zero gx looks modern better ( i play it on my wiiu these days)...
Are there no rumours on when mario strikers comes along.. on the amsterdam switch 2 event it was already included in the app .. so i can't imagine it will be that long...
And we indeed need SMB1.. still the OG! @skippermonkey
@The_Nintend_Pedant Furthermore some of us want to experience Wind Waker as we experienced it on the GameCube 2 23 years ago as we have a great nostalgia for it.
Also I personally prefer how it looks to the Wii U version. I preferred the brighter sky and sea colours and felt the shadowy look took away from the art direction. The GameCube version looks like a moving Ghibli film.
@fabiop Well they play the same either way, whether you "rent" or buy them
@Suketoudara
I completely agree, there was no reason to change WW's look, except that it attracted some attention at the time.
@Suketoudara correct. I just dont overpriced rent systems of games which are decades old. Just sell them like everybody else.
@ItsATM I honestly do not like any of those games.
@Anti-Matter I want to play on my Gamecube but we don't have the disks! >:U
@Denoloco soul caliber has 2 a widescreen mode
That's a lot of lag man. lol I'll give it a whirl for a month with the NS0 NGC controller and see how it goes. Maybe you can cut down latency by using a Wired USB-C cable with the NSO NGC Controller? Even if it can do so by half, the total amount of latency is a bit much compared to using real NGC software & an original wired NGC Controller.
Buying a brand new/fresh wireless NSO NGC controller is tough to up. Same thing applies to all of the other NSO controllers, with the exception of the 3-button Genesis pad, thanks to it's awfully recessed D-pad.
