So, there you are, in the midnight launch line to collect your brand-spanking-new Nintendo Switch 2. It's been a bit of an ordeal getting your pre-order in, but none of that matters now - you're here, you've made it, you're about to get your first taste of Mario Kart World on pristine new Nintendo hardware!...
Except when you open the box you see that your hardware is less than pristine, thanks to a GameStop employee who apparently used a stapler to attach pre-order receipts directly to Switch 2 boxes, with predictable results. Oof.
As highlighted by the redoubtable Wario 64, reddit Konflick says they opened their new Switch 2 to find two neat staple marks scratched into the console's screen. Worse still, apparently they weren't alone. "At least 100" people had their receipts stapled directly to the boxes, according to a reply from Konflick.
Now, it's possible some of those Switch 2 screens escaped the scrape, but if this really is the case, it seems like this branch of GameStop is going to have plenty of returns and some upset people coming in today.
As many commenters on the thread have said, there's no need to be stapling receipts to anything — tape on the bag would do just fine! — but even if the screen weren't damaged, we'd be mighty pissed if even the console's box was punctured needlessly.
If we were being very generous to the unthinking staple-wielder, you could suggest that Nintendo placing the screen directly beneath the top of the box makes damage more likely to occur in transit. Indeed, Alex was surprised at how small the box is when he unpacked his own unit. As you can see in the pic above, the screen sits right there under the lid. Burying the tablet deeper within the box might have helped save some upset here.
You can't pin this one on Nintendo, though. Hopefully the store will have enough units to replace the damaged ones, although that seems extremely unlikely given the launch-day demand. Night. Mare.
Did this happen to you? Have you ever had your day one hardware turn up in a less-than-pristine state? Let us know in the usual place.

Taking the console of the box automatically makes it used. Ugh, I can't stand GameStop!
Yeah no, this is just GameStop being incredibly dumb - not particularly surprising considering we're talking about them, but still... fingers crossed that at least the system itself is fine for most if not hopefully all!
That’s beyond stupid… Gamestop really sh*t the bed, there. Wow… Also, maybe, just maybe… Nintendo made a poor choice with that packaging and should have either put the screen face-down towards the inside of the box, or just buried it further in. But Gamestop… 🤦🏻♂️
@ear_wig Ah, but if the screen was face down it would detract from that wow moment when you first unbox it. You'd be surprised by how much thought companies put into things like that.
Oh my God... I hate this. I also hate stickers on Amazon's physical copies of Switch games. If I want to leave my copy sealed, it's sometimes such a pain to get rid of them!
@Vordus It’s a blank screen…? The back has a S2, which is maybe cooler? Anyways, the wow I’m looking for is the console in there, undamaged.
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who cares about the condition of the box itself also. I still have my console boxes from the Game Boy Colour onward. Not only do some of them fetch a pretty penny, but they are a lot of fun to look through!
Outside Target right now. If they pull something similar off, they can expect to not expect me shopping there anymore. But yeah, screw GameStop.
Edit: Got mine already. Everything was fine, thankfully.
Seems like an honest and isolated mistake to me. Someone just trying to make the day run smoother for everyone, but perhaps should have thought about it a bit more first.
Yeah, I'm a lot more inclined to put the blame on Nintendo for packaging them this stupidly in the first place.
The shop shouldn't be doing anything to actively damage the product or its packaging if they're selling it as new. This could get pricy for GameStop in a hurry if someone decides to sue.
This could be thousands of dollars in damage just from a stapler.
I would be so mad. The anticipation around this hardware is at a boil—it would be ultra upsetting to finally open one and be greeted with a scratched screen.
That’s stupid. We just used a sticker that was easy to peel off at my stores. There is no reason to damage the boxes.
Actually that's very thoughtful of them. You see they prescratch the console, that way your own first scratch you'll make won't hurt as much. 🫢
I really don't know why people still shop at GameStop. One of the worst retail companies in the world with absolutely incompetent workers. And this is Nintendo's fault too. Why have an expensive product packaged like that? I cringed when I watched the first unboxing of the Switch 2 and saw how the console was immediately was just sitting on top, screen side up. That's asking for trouble during transit or when it's stocked to have the screen not be protected. Packages are dropped or mishandled all the time. Having the most important thing in the box be "protected" by a thin piece of cardboard is just stupid in my opinion.
I’ve got no special love for GameStop, but this is a case of a stupid employee, not some terrible top-down corporate policy.
, this is not about Gamestop... This is about a limited number of people who were not the sharpest crayons in the crayon box.
As stupid as it is to deliberately puncture the box that's absolutely terrible packaging design to have the screen protected by only a single layer of cardboard.
On one hand, I’m a bit surprised the actual Switch 2 itself is right at the top of the box like that.
On the other hand, punching holes in a box of a brand new console you’re selling to your customers is some level of hate for your own consumers I’ve never seen before.
I have to wait outside this store for another hour before getting mine...I'm now extremely paranoid...
@AllBLK I dont shop there, simply because im from a country that is not USA, thankfully on many levels 😃

@JohnnyMind this isn't even Gamestop being dumb. This is over worked, under paid employees not thinking because their hours for the launch got cut at the last minute and they were probably rushing to get stuff done. I speak as an ex manager who still has friends there and know their hours for the launch were cut by 50+ per store on Tuesday afternoon
Just stapling the box and making holes in it would piss me off enough, but to damage the unit? WTH!
Incompetent buffoons.
@MathByThePixel Yeah, I see no point in buying a brand new console in a damaged box. The box and all its contents should be in perfect condition
Alex unpacking his unit... the video we've all been waiting for.
@Xenochimp ... So still GameStop being dumb even though in a different sense (because blinded by profits in the short term, of course) by treating their employees that way - anyway, thanks for sharing your experience!
For, how long has it been, thirty years now (oh god), the scene from The Simpsons of Lisa cutting open the package of yearbooks and inadvertently slashing right through the cover of the one on top has played in my head every time I open a box.
I never expected that scene to have affected anyone else the same way, but I have generally expected people to think before taking a pointy thing to a box, particularly when the box is meant for someone else.
Think it was an intentional sabotage
This makes me feel sad.
@AllBLK To be fair, I’m not a big GameStop fan either but the preorder experience for this round of hardware releases went smoothest at GameStop in-person orders/pickup.
I showed up on 4/24 and waited in line for a couple hours until the store opened and then preordered a console. My wife went yesterday and waited in for about 30 minutes and preordered one for herself.
We went to the store at 11p last night and collected them about 90 minutes later. I commented to her that this whole experience has been surprisingly smooth.
The case in this article seems to be one or a few employees trying to make everything run smoother but making a pretty big screw up in the process.
@Grimley141
(question: meaning of "4/24")
@Lizuka I think it’s certainly valid to call out Nintendo for very questionable packaging.
However, this situation is all on GameStop. I find it hard to imagine, someone working in and around the gaming industry, aren’t aware of how valued a pristine or near to pristine game package is to some. So on that alone, a measure of common sense is not a stretch to expect.
@Mario500 Month/Day, so April 24th. (there are multiple formats for dates, in the US, we use month/day/year) 😁
Everything about GameStop is an idiot factory, however, the way Nintendo packs this console in the box is extremely concerning. Compare that with how the steam deck, for instance, is packaged when purchased from Steam… that it ships safely within its own carry case (that Nintendo makes you buy yourself for their system), and the carry case with steam deck inside is shipped inside a cardboard box as well. So why would Nintendo put their console, that costs this much, right under a flimsy cardboard lid with NO protection?? Don’t they understand that millions of people will be getting these delivered via courier services that seem to play football with their parcels considering the condition they often arrive in!
I got mine from GameStop, and the number was a sticker on the box, which bugged me but this is much worse
not all gamestops are like this the one i go too treats their customers with respect and quite helpful reason why i still get my games from them.
I never use GameStop because so often if you buy a “new” game there at full price they have already removed the shrink wrap and stuck a sticker RIGHT ON THE BOX.
Sorry but I think they are terrible and this was no surprise at all. I will walk into a store and buy my Switch 2 where I can inspect the box has nothing applied to it or been opened
And there is stock at all the big stores around me. I knew this and it’s why I didn’t pre-order. Because pre orders often get “sticker star’d”
Very stupid for Nintendo to value packaging presentation over durability, and that contributed to this mess. Then poor Gamestop training and management to not emphasize that packages shouldn’t be damaged in any way. Plenty of blame to go around here.
I just hope those units and screens don’t become e-waste, and Nintendo can replace them efficiently.
Someone’s getting fired.
The irony of this is that GameStop is the one place that should actually care about the preservation of physical media, including the boxes that that media comes in. “Sorry, we can’t give you full trade-in credit for this Switch 2 because the box has a bunch of staples in it!!!”
Glad I went with Best Buy, no issues with pre orders, went pretty smooth last night when I picked it up. I never get why people still do GameStop
"As of February 2025, the company operated 3,203 stores"
Proof that Gamestop just hires the dumbest ***** out there. I am convinced that anyone who works for Gamestop has less then a 6th grade level of education.
@nocdaes That type of honest mistake gets you fired. The systems are in short supply as it is and tape is not much slower at all compared to staple
@SpinEnDash To be fair, the students didn’t have the ticket they were given at the beginning of the year anyway. So it was all a crapshoot after that. Nelson just took over and threw them out into the crowd.
What a compete and utter numpty.... 👏
@dartmonkey Well, you can pin it on Nintendo for using cheap cardboard to pack their boxes. If it can't survive a staple without damaging the contents, how is it to do its purpose of keeping the contents secure?
But I guess cheap packaging is how everything is done these days. I guess these days packaging is meant to look nice and not to secure the contents, unlike in my day.
GameStop, more like Game STOP!
GameStop has a very specific set of skills when it comes to damaging packaging and contents with staples and permanent stickers.
Ugh. Meanwhile, my Gamestop had pre purchase at 3pm the day before, and festivities starting an hour after closing, with no staplers, and more than enough for everyone.
Free screen protectors, and prizes from events.
Hate Gamestop corporate, but adore my lovely store.
@Kiyata
To be fair people buy all kinds of electronics through couriers and the packaging varies. Ignoring the fact most online retailers put that box into secured additional box or at least use bubble wrap. I mean Phones have a very similar packaging since at least 10 years.
@Mariotag More than enough Switch 2 consoles for everyone?
The office supply store chain ‘Staples’ had a slogan; “staples, yeah we got that.”
Did GameStop steal it? 😉
Packaging the console like this may be a headscratcher choice but stapling consumer tech boxes over the use of stickers and parcel tape (whose most common use is in the name) can risk a skull scratched right through.
Fortunately nothing like this happened here, but GS still managed to make me dislike them anyway.
I was talking to the shop assistant to get my Switch 2 and this guy says that he would have added a "4 year warranty" (something that's usually 10-20€ more in any shop here and that's really useless in most cases, as we have 2 year warranty by law) and their "superfabulous screen protection film", although I was already buying a Nintendo's casse which already contained one.
Well, when he told me about the total, it was 90€ more! They wanted 60€ for the warranty and 30€ FOR A SCREEN FILM ("but, you know, it's our special one"). So I said "thanks, but no thanks, just gimme the console and the case please", paid for them and left disgusted.
@AllBLK
Because with both the Switch 1 and 2 I was able to walk in on pre-order day and get one. No scrambling online. Also, I was able to put down $50.00 USD and pay it off over the last month and a half over two pay days. I don't usually shop there, but they've yet to let me down with a console launch.
Yep you have to go to a country where the intelligence level is really low to achieve this!
Between this and some Gamestops locking their Switch 2 purchases behind accessory bundles, Pro hips, and warranty purchases, I'm glad I was able to get mine at my local Gamestop without problems.
Honestly I can't really fault gamestop for this. When I opened box and saw they pack the screen next to the slim cardboard with literally no insulation i cringed. I wonder how many damaged screens will happen just from shipping alone. Like any device with a screen is supposed to be insulated and NOT just have the screen literally 2 millimeters from the outside of the box.
Nintendo have changed the retail box size, for NintendoSwitch1V1. But, did Nintendo will made an other retail box, for NintendoSwitch2 V1?
Gamestop needs to go out of business
This comes down to poor manager. Why why?? Use rubber band or tape the receipt to the bag? They made this into a manager caused this was nothing from Nintendo or GameStop corp. This comes down to local manager that did a DS move and caused GameStop $$ loss and will cost them their job. So don't blame the employees their manager did poor job and they get blamed for it. At least news is some of them are getting replacement which is good.
@jbrodack Gamestop needs to go out of business
For what, Please explain that? You think corporation is consumer friendly think you should look at some big expanses of land in Siberia for sale.
"Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder."
@sd7232
Yup. Of all the ppl there, the store didn't run out.
