We're now less than a week out from the Switch 2 and it seems Nintendo has updated the estimated file size for Mario Kart World.
According to official online listings in the US and Japan, this new open-world entry has been reduced from 23.4GB to 21.9GB. Although the Switch 2 comes loaded with 256GB of internal storage, it's nice to see Nintendo doing its best to keep file sizes down.
It seems Mario Kart World might not be the only file size update. The Nintendo Classics GameCube app listing on the US store has jumped from 3.5GB to 5.1GB in size. Along with this, Kirby and the Forgotten Land upgrade pack is now listed as 11GB.
As previously revealed, a lot of third-party games on Switch 2 seemingly require a lot more storage. The file sizes for games like Street Fighter 6 have also been reduced. Keep in mind, file sizes are subject to change ahead of release and over time with updates.
If we hear any other updates about Switch 2 game file sizes, we'll let you know.

that makes way more sense with kirby and the forgotten land. it was funny for a while, when we thought it shrunk 100 mb on switch 2, but that is nice as well
The GCN app bump is intriguing. Something else from the April roap actually arriving at launch?
@Corrupted if I read correct the 11GB are only the upgrade. Without the game.
I can't wait till next week 😍
I just hope my normal Switch 1 games all work on Switch 2 🤞🏻
On the other hand, have anyone had e-mail that their order has been shipped? Nintendo had charged my card, but now I'm wondering if I can get it on Thursday. Do Nintendo usually deliver pre-orders on time?
Nintendo have somehow always been great with their file sizes for 1st party games.
That's why I'm in no rush to buy an SD card, I will get one eventually but 128GB will be plenty to keep me going for a while
edit sorry 256GB
My Walmart pre-order for my two pro controllers got cancelled, so I had to pre-order from Best Buy. Hopefully everything comes in on time and they don't cancel me too. Getting the bundle console from GameStop...what could go wrong...? 🤪
@CriticalHit
Thats the first thing i am going to try🤣
@Justifier When I’ve ordered stuff from the Nintendo store in the past (including consoles) they have always arrived on release day.
@Justifier
I am in , I have the tracking number for the Nintendo Switch 2 big case since last monday but it doesn't already shipped. I don't receive the shipped email.
I think it's the same situation for your order if you check the nintendo website.
Does anybody know how it's going to work with GameCube game s? As far as I can tell, whenever they add new games to one of the other Classics apps, the new games get ed automatically. That's fine when they're only a couple of hundred K each, but GameCube games are 1.5GB which could soon add up to a lot of space, especially if they have separate US and Europe versions.
@Paul12345 I’d imagine it will be the same to the other apps. GameCube games (code, art assets etc) are all different sizes, with most being much smaller than the 1.36GB ISO size when games are ripped from discs.
I really hope they allow external hard drive via the dock. With quick transfer between the hard drive and the console. Even if games can't be played off the hard drive, just being able to easily manage your library in docked mode would make such a difference. You could get away with just having the one SD Express card. As it is just now, that's not going to be possible if I want to transfer my Switch library and buy a few Switch 2 games. I'll be needing to archive games within weeks, after spending 200 dollars on a 1tb SD Express card. Without hard drive , this is going to be an annoying and expensive generation to navigate.
If only there was an extra SD card slot for our Switch 1 games, or even to store S2 games for quick transfer, it would have made such a difference. An extra tenner onto the console price would have saved us a lot of money and hassle going forward.
Nintendo have always been ok with file sizes.
But let’s be honest just look at the game assets say compared to cyberpunk on switch 2 64gb and other games on other consoles.
The game assets, basically overall visual and sound are a lot lower because they are not there in the game, making file sizes smaller.
@nhSnork They could've added a Special Edition to one of the games that they do sometimes, with cheats or stuff unlocked etc
If they have imcluded another game at launch it might be Mario Strikers as that's been available to play on it at those Switch 2 showcases
@Justifier yeah they're on the day delivery in my experience. It most probably won't arrive early, but they do charge a week in advance in general. I've been charged too.
They should really do the Gamecube games the way Rare Replay handles 360 games and just make it where you have separate s for the ones you actually want.
Honestly, the file sizes, coupled with storage issues are worrying.
Guess they've managed to further compress the games that got their sizes reduced (glad to hear that it applies also to some third-party ones like Hitman and Street Fighter 6 considering they're Game-Key Cards unlike Nintendo's) while in the case of NSO GameCube I wonder if we're getting more games at launch or at least soon after - maybe Strikers which if I recall correctly was shown as already included in the app during a Treehouse segment or something like that!
@Mariotag save up for that terra card baby! 🤣😳
I'm waiting a year, prices will probably drop now that there's more reason for express cards by the day.
256 divided by 22 is about 11.6-ish, which is pretty reasonable I think, considering that one is not likely to have more than 11 first-party games installed even over the whole lifetime of the system, unless one is a big collector. And I imagine third-party games (except for third-party AAAs) will be much smaller. So most people might not even need to buy an external storage device at all, which is great and much better than the situation with the old Switch!
@stuie1234 that’s also what I think. Game + 11GB upgrade. For physical it’s only the 11 GB
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess also has a smaller file size now, it was 11.7 GB previously but now it's 10.1
@Sylamp Capcom also putting in effort. That's great.
it's very good the game video mario kart world
Kirby Star-crossed World DLC being 11 GB is quite huge, can’t wait to hear more about the game!
Neat. More space for other junk!
@Member_the_game Isn't the base model double that size? (256GB)
@tootiefrootie
Yes you are correct, sorry it was very early in the morning when I wrote my first post 🤣
And yet Split Fiction still sits at a ridiculous 71GB.
Removed some feature and track for later DLCs?
@OorWullie I sincerely doubt dock-based external storage will ever happen. Nintendo wouldn’t want to implement storage that can be left behind when the system is taken out of the dock, and it’s likely that transfer speeds wouldn’t be acceptable either. Similar to how the PS5 won’t let you play PS5 native games from an external device but only from built in/M.2 slot storage. Especially given the faster microsd required for this gen.
The answer from Nintendo will boil down to, “what, you can’t afford a bigger card? Get a second or third job, plebe!”
Dat compression. As the kids don't say.
Well, all first party Nintendo games will be on the cartridge so really those games won’t count for very much except for any updates
Very glad to see additional file size reductions from Nintendo! Bravo!
With the high cost of memory cards on what will almost certainly be a very popular console coupled with the game key card factor, I think some better compression methods might come to fruition in the coming years.
I can easily see game key cards with 75+ GB file sizes limiting game sales, when you look at the current prices of the memory cards on the Switch 2.
That’s good. Hopefully I won’t have to get a MicroSD Express card at launch.
@dskatter I was meaning more for storage purposes, rather than playing games from it. With hard drive via dock, it would just be for storing games and letting you transfer them between the drive and the console and vice versa. It saves you having to archive games and re them and will surely be a lot quicker. With this, you could technically have your entire library ed and stored on the hard drive, and just have a few games on the console at any given time.
Lovely. Means I can coast off the internal storage for a while. I will probably only have 2 third party games on there to start (SF6 and VF 5 REVO). Mostly buying switch games this year (just needed to make sure I had the system).
@PlatinumSeraph Not to be Mr. Buzz Killington but after the space the operating system takes up and the way gigabytes are calculated the actual available free space on a new Switch 2 is reported to be 221 gigabytes. So the math would be more like 221 divided by 22 equals approximately 10. So ten games the size of Mario Kart World will be able to be stored on a Switch 2 without any external memory.
first launch game, and this game already exceed max cardridge space. so stupid by nintendo. come on nintendo 160gb cardridges nintendo!! don't act like it is expensive, it is not. you want to earn money in online
ya'll never gonna own a physical game that's for sure.
I'm all for smaller game sizes 😉
@Yydeckard "Well, all first party Nintendo games will be on the cartridge so really those games won’t count for very much except for any updates."
Except a lot of people will be buying the MKW bundle at launch, and most of those will be digital copies, so shrinking MKW, as this article is about, does help a lot of people.
Here's a list of the countries getting a physical copy of MKW in the bundle.
https://nintendosoup.com/nintendo-switch-2-mario-kart-world-set-comes-with-a-physical-copy-in-some-regions/
@OorWullie For pure storage purposes I’d be 100% fine with it. Like I said, though, I don’t see Nintendo doing this anytime soon. But it would definitely be nice to have a 1 TB HD connected to my dock to juggle games!
This is coming from someone who has an 8 TB external hooked up to his PS5 and a 4 TB external to his Series X.
@PALversusNTSC it uh…it doesn’t exceed max cartridge space. That is 64GB. MKW is 21.9. No exceeding happening.
It looks like I did the right thing by buying a sd card express. It's gonna get full in no time.
I think carts all the way is best 😁
@OorWullie I've been thinking that myself, I'm sure something will become available down the line, with the file sizes of third party games it would make sense...
I don’t plan on buying an express card for some time, (at least not until there is a Sandisk branded 512GB card available - the fact that there isn’t one yet should tell you something about the quality of the other brands cards)
The bump in internal storage is nice but still overall less than what I had in total with my Switch + 256gb microSD, which in combination were at capacity. So I will be deleting and reinstalling games for some time to come.
What would be an incredible help is if a software update came that allows us to allocate older Switch titles to a standard microSD (similar to how a PS5 will allow you to run PS4 titles from a mechanical USB hard drive)
This way I could use the card I have, with 256gb allocated to Switch 1 titles, and all the on-board memory allocated to Switch 2. That would actually last me a VERY long time, perhaps indefinitely for the entire time I own the console.
@CriticalHit Instead of hoping, just look it up. All of the incompatible games & ones with issues are listed on Nintendo's website.
@OorWullie That would be excellent, but knowing Nintendo, it's unlikely. I'm just hoping that we can play games directly off the SD Express. That would make me happy enough.
@Sebos Agreed. CD Projekt Red managed to slim Cyberpunk down significantly for this release. There's no reason Hazelight couldn't have done the same except I imagine EA didn't care to give them the necessary time to make that happen.
@Justifier I'm still waiting for the invite. : (
This storage is a problem and really sucks. I already filled my 256gb express card with my Switch 1 games and have 80gb more to re- when I get my Switch 2. And this is after deleting 100gb worth of games to make room. 1tb is the minimum the Switch 2 needs.
@MegaVel91 That's rough, man. Let's hope that everyone who wants one can get it as soon as possible.
I wonder how big the NGC app is going to be. Since GameCube games could go up to 1.5GB per game. With 20 games this could be 30GB, 30 games will be 45GB.
Have they officially announced/released 1tb Express cards yet? I've been perusing the usual outlets for a while now and the biggest I can find it 512gb
@Dan420 Thanks for correcting my maths. Well, that's still not too bad.
@Andee Only Lexar and the Gamestop branded express card come in a 1 terabyte variation at this time and they are both just under $200 at $199 and $189.
@Dan420 woof — that's a chunk of change - think I'll be okay with a 512gb for now.
