Like all big pop culture moments, time has done weird things to the public perception of Sonic Unleashed. What launched in HD on Xbox 360 and PS3 (and in SD on Wii and PS2) back in 2008 to the lukewarm reception of "oh, it's like Sonic only slower... and greyer" has developed into something a tad more nostalgic, particularly for those who grew up with the title.
It's not one of the games that immediately springs to mind when you think of which blue blur adventure is ripe for a remaster, but a fan-made PC port is making us see things in a new light (thanks for the heads up, Push Square). Grab your mascara and pull down your fringe, we're jonesing for Sonic Unleashed on Switch 2.

Inspired by the Zelda 64 Recompiled' project, 'Unleashed Recompiled' brings Sonic's emo phase to PC with a handful of modern tweaks like an uncapped frame rate option, ultrawide , full achievements and more. It's based on the Xbox 360 edition of the game, so you have to provide the files from a legally acquired copy of it to get the port installed and running.
While the above release trailer is far from the version of Sonic Unleashed that we Nintendo fans played on Wii back in the late 2000s, the improved resolution and frame rate have us wondering what an official facelift might look like for Sonic's moodiest adventure. Sonic Generations got the remaster treatment last year, and it sure would be a memorable way to start the Switch 2 line-up with a bang, no?
Look, are there Sonic titles that we would rather see get an official remaster on Switch 2? Yeah, there are. But if the recent change in opinion towards Unleashed is to be believed, perhaps SEGA is sitting on an untapped banger.
Would you like to see Sonic Unleashed make a return on Switch 2? Let us know in the comments.

I actually liked Unleashed. I also got the best of both worlds, having the Japanese Wii version.
Despite not looking as good as the PS3 and 360 versions, those versions had you running around hub worlds that was universally agreed to be empty and useless.
And the Japanese voice of Chip is far far less annoying.
Quite the opposite, I'm surprised they didn't start with Unleashed if they intended to remaster Colors and Generations.
Love to see that Unleashed got a PC port and I definitely wouldn't say no to an official rerelease, hopefully also on Switch 2, either!
@HammerGalladeBro
From a marketability standpoint, Colors and Generations are more fondly ed, and SEGA's strategy has been to re-release what's successful, rather than remaster what needed it most.
To this day, the Werehog segments of Unleashed still turn players away since it's so antithetical to the daytime boost levels that the series would maintain.
It's much the same way that SEGA haven't bothered with re-releases of titles like Sonic 06 or the two Wii Storybook games.
A Switch 2 port? Of a Gen 6/7 game?🤔
(pfft) Like Unleashed would even run well on a Switch 2. I can smell the system catching fire already.
I liked Unleashed the warehog parts were fun searching the levels and the normal levels worked quite well
Haven't played it, but really liked that Cool Edge water/ice themed stage. Looked great and the music was great, too.
Though still not a fan of the werehog thing, kind of hinders the speed aspect of Sonic.
Werehog levels weren't bad intrinsically, but I later in the game, they did rely a lot on sections where you walk on thin tightrope paths, which wasn't the most fun gameplay mechanic around. And Eggmanland is just too long.
If Sega ever rereleases Unleashed, they should include the 360 version and the Wii version together as a bundle. Many people played the Wii one, which was very very different.
@nhSnork
With the current tools, not possible.
They used newly developed tools called XenonRecomp and XenosRecomp to convert Xbox 360 executables into C++ code, which can then be recompiled to platforms which x86 instruction sets.
That would be your modern PCs with x64 processors, which does include the Steam Deck.
They state that their tools currently only x86 compatible platforms because of the use of x86 instrinsics, whatever that means.
@Bunkerneath same, I've never really disliked the Werehog levels either. They're a bit a long and the battle music gets samey(to the point where you can actually turn it off in the recomp), but they've never ruined the game for me.
I played the game on the Wii and thought it was an okay time. Interesting at first but then got quickly dull. My oldest who was a kid at the time seem to enjoy it for a limited time only.
Also, this NL site reviewed it at 6.5/10 themselves as "not bad". A far cry from Mania Plus and Sonic & Shadow Generations. Generally the other Switch 1 offerings have been significantly better Sonic games as well.
Having said that if they can remaster it for the Switch 2 and improve it, I'd be down.
I've got the game but never boot up the 360 anymore, so of course I had to try the port. It looks and plays so much better on PC! There are some occasional serious gameplay issues if you raise the FPS cap above 60, but hopefully the devs can iron those out in a future patch.
@RupeeClock I think that's what I'm most interested about from all of this: how this Xbox recompiler tool opens the door to so many other 360 games getting a similar treatment to Unleashed. 06, Generations, Viva Pinata...imagine the possibilites.
@N00BiSH
For Sonic 06 and Generations specifically, there is Project 06 which is a promising fan made remake of the game, whilst generations has both its original PC release and the recent re-release, both of which have ample modding already.
There's definitely a lot of meaningful 360 games out there that never got re-released in any way, though I don't know the system well. Sonic is what I know.
This is the Croc situation all over again, where a game people haven’t played since they were 6 gets requested for a remaster.
I might be a crotchety old middle aged man but most of the games I played as a kid were crap too. Leave them in the past where they belong.
While I do like Unleashed for the most part, it was the Wii/PS2 versions I liked best compared to the HD version. The 360 version just had terrible level design plus Eggman Land gave me so much frustration that I completely gave up.
@RupeeClock I'm well aware of both, but Project 06 isn't really the same as a recompile(like how the Unleashed Project isn't the same game as Unleashed) and the PC version of Generations barely functions with its flipping slowdown, you need a mod in order for it to run well - at least in my experience.
@N00BiSH The Shadow Gens version of Sonic Generations runs good on PC out of the gate.
@Orpheus79V ehhhhhhhhh I mean yeah but y'know it's like I just want there to be an option for the OG and I don't care for some of the changes in the Shadow version and I'm going to stop talking now so that I don't get lynched by of the fanbase
I seeing this game and going crazy. I wanted Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed, but the Walmart I went to only had it for 3DS (I only had an Xbox 360 then). I bought this game instead, and I only made it to the second town. I enjoyed the regular Sonic stages, and I had fun with the first couple Werehog levels, but the first Boss was a nightmare. I was so stoked when I finally beat him, and the plane level was pretty fun… and then I quickly got sick of the Werehog sections in the following area, and I quit playing. I did eventually get All Stars Racing Transformed alongside Cars 3: Driven to Win, and while I’d happily shout “kachow” for the latter, I’d quickly shout “kaboom” for the former.
Hey I’d be up for this especially if it’s the next gen version since I only ever played the PS2 version.
@EarthboundBenjy I would definitely be up for that! Except replace the Wii version with the ps2 version. 😅
Amazing "What We Do In the Shadows" reference in that subheader.
I would like a remaster, but as long as the original voice actors will be replaced with the current ones.
I thought people hated this? I it clearly at the time
@Mando44646 the standard sonic levels were great, the werehog levels……….not so great
An actual remaster would have DRM on PC, it's maybe better that the fans did it instead.
@EarthboundBenjy Both versions are too different to be just jumbled like that, even in a bundle. SEGA did ignore DS Colors when they re-released (badly) Colors. They would ignore the Wii/PS2 version too.
The bad 3D Sonic games (which is all of them except Adventure 1 and 2, Colors and Generations) should be bundled together.
Call it 'Sonic Rocks Collection'. Kids and parents will assume it's a cool name, veterans will recognize it as the evil twin to Sonic Gems Collection.
@MirrorFate2
Yeah, I suppose so. If Sega ever feel like making any more collections, Sonic Colours DS should be included in a Sonic Rush collection. Since it plays pretty much like a third Rush game.
@RupeeClock But Unleashed’s speed levels are some of the best in the series
The X360 version was also goddamn beautiful for its time, especially like the Greek inspired area.
BTW, one random observation about Sonic Unleashed that I always thought was interesting...
The two versions of Unleashed are so fundamentally different from each other that the very rules of lycanthropy are not consistent.
On Xbox 360 / PS3, Sonic changes to Werehog form based on the time of day. Eggmanland has hourglass switches that highlight this.
On Wii / PS2, however, Sonic changes to Werehog based on if he is in the light or the dark. There are the puzzle temples that involve switching forms that highlight this.
Sega can never keep Sonic lore consistent, not even within different versions of the same game.
@EarthboundBenjy The canon lore is the XBox 360/PS3 version, going by the Encyclo-speedia.
The Wii/PS2 version had to do this due to well, not being as strong as those two consoles.
Yeah, no thanks. The amount of remasters is already getting out of control, and this certainly isn’t an evergreen title that badly needs it.
I had the Wii version, to me Unleashed was the beginning of the end for Sonic.
So it's kind of bittersweet seeing this happen, I can finally play the HD version, but I'd much rather have better access to '06. Xenia cranks up my PC's resources skyhigh, while P-06 plays nothing like the original.
Played a bit of years ago and never really got into it. I’ll take a Sonic Advance Collection however.
@Erigen Am curious what the Japanese Wii version had that was different.
@squidduforeal The bashing on the Croc remaster is just pathetic, and the idea that only the good games should be revitalised and that the bad games should be left "in the past where they belong" is just closed-mindedness.
The great thing about developers revisiting sub-par games is that it gives them a chance to rectify the flaws of the original release, and this is exactly what is happening with the Croc remaster.
The team behind the Croc remaster have already revealed on their socials that the new Croc now has full analog controls, improved camera, and other QoL improvements such as 60fps and the bosses now having health bars.
I myself, was one of the folks rooting for a comeback of Croc, because I saw that Croc still had some potential providing that the developers resolve the flaws of the original release, and that is exactly what they are doing.
If you don't like certain games then that's fine, but you shouldn't push it upon others like it's universal facts, when it's just opinions on a video game.
Also @squidduforeal most people consider the music of Croc to be great; one of the strongest things about Croc. So please don't imply that the music of Croc is objectively mediocre when even people who aren't a fan of Croc agree that Croc's OST is fantastic.
@SilverBullet_35 Id rather companies made new good games that attempted to cover up the mistakes of the past.
@RadioHedgeFund I'm glad to see someone actually reasonable and pragmatic in the video game landscape.
Sonic does not have 1/20th of the production value of Mario.
