declaring for bankruptcy. Things have, naturally, been pretty quiet from the series ever since, but this week, it has sprung back to mind (thanks, VGC).
That's because Nintendo has filed a new trademark for Hotel Dusk's Western title in Japan (it already holds the rights to the Japanese title, 'Wish Room'), marking the first time that the name has been legally claimed in the region. The trademark filing was submitted on 9th May and was published in Japan on 19th May.
Now, just yesterday, we clarified that trademark renewals are nothing more than business as usual for big companies like Nintendo and are no suggestion that something new could be on the horizon. New trademarks aren't all that different (they're still far from an official confirmation), but the mere fact that Nintendo would want to get the trademark out there in the first place has us brimming with speculation.
You see, as pointed out on Another Code: Recollection.
It could be a complete coincidence, but seeing Nintendo claim the 'Hotel Dusk' name in Japan has us wondering whether a similar collection could be in the pipeline for a future Switch/Switch 2 release. We're not about to get our hopes up too high, but seeing that noir duo back in a beefed-up package sure would be sweet.
Take everything above with a healthy grain of salt, of course, but let's see what the future holds, eh?
Would you like to see Hotel Dusk: Room 215 return on Switch? Let us know in the comments.

Oh my god please bring these back
A new trademark is certainly more promising than renewals for the reasons mentioned also by the article - fingers crossed we actually end up getting a rerelease of Hotel Dusk games at some point, would love to finally play them (and even more so after playing and enjoying so much the Another Code ones on Switch)!
I liked Hotel Dusk and Another Code in the DS.
Didn’t one of them have an open end? Here hoping to get more of this series.
But the best games of this kind was 1112 on iPhone. Unfortunately the devs gave up after part III.
Cool, it seems Nintendo is doing a lot of digging up older and more obscure titles. The Famicom Detective series, Another Code. My fondest hope is getting Eternal Darkness on Switch 2!
Oh yeah! I loved Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and bought it day one! The DS was home so so many great games in this style, but this one really stood out!
Here's hoping for the "Another Code Recollection" treatment!
Another one from the cold case files, looks interesting.
I played Another Code on the DS. I got the Wii one but haven't gotten around to it yet. ...It's on the to-do list.
I bought the Switch remake collection, but I felt like I wanted to play the Wii one first, so I haven't played it yet. I know it's the same story, but I know the puzzles are different in the remake version so I want to have played the original first anyway.
I started Hotel Dusk on the DS but didn't get far. I want to restart it at some point. And I bought Last Window for afterwards.
These games are fun and interesting, it would be cool to see if Nintendo is keen on making more of them. Might kickstart me into actually playing through them more expediently lol.
I just finished playing Hotel Dusk the other month and now I'm hearing there could be a remake? lol
Somewhat mixed feelings about this, but if the remake for Hotel Dusk includes the sequel like Another Code did then I'll gladly buy it!
Hotel Dusk is a great game with way better writing than I expected. Hopefully the remake doesn't take 5 years to come out!
@jimnorman the recent Arc System Works datamine also contained references to a Hotel Dusk and Last Window remake and they also did the Another Code remake and they’re made up of former Cinq staff.
I’d like to see a remake on Switch 2. I like the 2D art, characters and story but the 3D graphics and gameplay is so rough to go back to now.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!
This is important! This is the best visual novel (if it can count as one) or point and click game I have ever played and that is not a light statement. This is a masterpiece and we need another 302847 games in this universe
Please let this be real! One of the best DS games ever made. Still have my original cart. Would be bloody perfect with Switch 2 mouse controls!
Do it!!! And don't forget Last Window!!!
I played Hotel Dusk for the first time about 2 years ago, and while it had a decent story, it pretty much had no purpose being a video game. 95% or the interactive elements was just mindlessly walking around, trying to find the next person to talk to.
Sure, I understand that it's kind of a visual novel, but even for that, I thought that it had too much empty parts with you constantly going up and down the same corridors.
I haven't played Last Window yet, and I heard it's better, so we'll see I guess.
I bought this game on release after a really bad breakup and it was a bit of a life saver for me. Great game with a tinge of melancholy, perfect for a broken heart!
@JimNorman “You see, as pointed out on Reddit by BreafingBread, Nintendo took out a new trademark on the Western title for Trace Memory — Cing's other adventure series — back in 2018, and what came to Switch five years later? Another Code: Recollection, a remastered bundle that appeared in Japan under its Western title for the first time.”
This is incorrect for a couple of reasons.
First, neither ‘Trace Memory’ or ‘Another Code’ are the Western titles of the games. Trace Memory is the title in North America and Another Code is the title in Japan and Europe. The West ≠ North America.
Second, the games were always called “アナザーコード” (literally ‘Another Code’) in Japan - on the DS, the Wii, AND the Switch. Its title never changed at all. BreafingBread also didn’t claim that the Switch release “appeared in Japan under its Western title for the first time”, so it seems as if you’ve misunderstood the difference between English/Japanese and Romaji/Katakana in the Reddit post you’ve linked to.
I never played Hotel Dusk (though it does seem right up my alley and I would love to), but I'm all for Nintendo mining for old DS gems! If they dig deep enough they might finally hit Elite Beat Agents!
Yes to a Kyle Hyde Recollection, please. I'd love to play Last Window for the first time since NoA denied me the chance back on the original version, as well as re-experience Hotel Dusk/Wish Room.
Yes please! I freaking love this series and would love a recollection and a possible sequel would be amazing!
I really hope this means some sort of remake or sequel is on the way! Hotel Dusk is one of my favorite games 😚
I thought this game was already leaked a few weeks ago? The trademarks just add extra evidence to that leak
@Axecon datamined (which I guess can be considered a form of leaking) but yes. Arc sys is developing these like they did with another code.
PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASE

I may have ended up falling in love with Another Code Recollection back when I played it earlier this year (especially the second game) but I was very much under the impression it didn't end up selling particularly amazingly or anything but lo and behold: if this is what people are speculating it to be, it seems to have done well enough for Hotel Dusk to potentially get the same treatment in the near future. I actually have both of the original DS games lined up for later this year but a full-on remake to bring them to modern audiences would be amazing to see too! 🤍
@Markiemania95 Ah, looks like I got things muddled there! Thank you for pointing this out 😄
I see Nintendo was watching the latest Game Sack episode..
those games had fantastic soundtracks
Heck yeah. Hotel Dusk was awesome, and I never did play Last Window. Would love to see this happen.
I would LOVE a remaster, and a chance to play the sequel. I have fond memories of the first game.
@JimNorman It’s still incorrect though. The article still reads -
“Another Code: Recollection, a remastered bundle that appeared in Japan under its Western title for the first time.”
Which, again, is not true. The Japanese DS and Wii versions were called Another Code. The Japanese Switch version is called Another Code. It never had its name changed to a ‘Western title’, so the age above is just completely erroneous. It was always called ‘Another Code’ in Japan. The whole paragraph was, and is, just not worth including in the article.
EDIT:

Even if you can’t read katakana, you can see that the main text is the same.
Had many opportunities to pluck Hotel Dusk from the clearance bin back in the day, and ed on it every time. Learning its sequel never made it to the States kinda validated skipping out on it. I would be happy to buy a collection of the two games for my OG Switch, and this does seem like the kind of game that Nintendo would develop for the Switch 1 at this point. However it is still very unlikely.
I've heard a lot of good things about this game, so no complaints if a remake shows up. I'm always up for a good mystery VN. I never knew there was a sequel.
Oh, neat! I was hoping we'd see something like this after the Another Code re-release.
Surely DS comes to Switch Online over the next couple of years. It's next in line at least.
I’m going to do like I always do with these stories and point out that if trademarks were always a sign of something coming then we’d have like 5 Eternal Darkens sequels by now. That being said…
Please Nintendo actually do this. The world needs more Kyle Hyde!
Hotel Dusk was my first visual novel. Loved it so much. Played it at a time when there was so much uncertainty in my life. During the financial crisis, I sank a lot of brooding hours behind that miraculous dual screen, locked in my room. Those games really saved me.
@Axecon Nothing in the leaks points to Hotel Dusk. What leaked were 2 Nintendo-exclusive projects, with one called Project Watari (Cross) being built in Unreal Engine 5 that is slated as a Switch/Switch 2 release, and one called Project Life, which is intended as a small hour-long story experience designed as a showcase for the Switch 2's features, is apparently dialogue-less, and seems to be from the Recollection team
One of my favorite adventure games ever. While this could easily be nothing I'm still glad some acknowledgement was given its way.
A reminder: ASW has a Super Switch exclusive due out for November with a project codename that can connect to grizzled detectives... or Goku.
Cool! See you in 5 years then.
Last Window... I don't think that came out in NA, but I don't recall. Definitely liked Hotel Dusk: Room 215. I still need to play the follow up to Trace Memory.
Hotel dusk was a great game. I never owned the game, but my friend did. And I'd take their ds everytime I visited and played for hours.
If it happens... I just hope its better than what they did with another code. I hated the decisions made on than one.
Played it way back then and enjoyed for the most part. The artwork really stood out. Never got around to the sequel though.
I played Hotel Dusk while in college, and I absolutely loved its story and setting, and Kyle Hyde will always have a special place in my heart. I even imported a copy of Last Window sometime afterward. I'd be over the moon if this series returned!
Would definitely be interested in picking this up if it comes to Switch. I got Another Code Recollection and really enjoyed it.
I've missed this avocado green trim.
I'll be surprised if they do this given that Another Code Recollection wasn't carried by major American retailers and seems to have not broken a million. Then again, systems over goals.
