Nintendo has announced that it is taking extra steps to prevent Switch 2 scalping in Japan by ing forces with three marketplace sites.
As announced on its official website, Nintendo states it is working with Mercari Inc, LINE Yahoo Japan Corporation, and Rakuten Group "in an effort to prevent fraudulent listings of Nintendo-related products, including the Nintendo Switch 2".
This step is just another that NCL has taken to help facilitate a smooth launch for the Switch 2. It's also released two separate models in Japan, including a higher-price multilingual option, while also implementing a lottery system for its pre-orders.
Here's Nintendo's full announcement (translated by Google):
"Nintendo Co., Ltd. has agreed to cooperate with three flea market site operators, Mercari, Inc., LINE Yahoo Japan Corporation, and Rakuten Group, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as the "Three Service Providers"), in an effort to prevent fraudulent listings of Nintendo-related products, including the Nintendo Switch 2, which will be released on June 5, 2025."
LINE Yahoo Japan is taking a particularly strict stance, announcing a complete ban on all Switch 2 listings, with those who do so facing suspensions. It hasn't specified an end date for this measure, but will announce more later. Rakuten is taking the same stance, but only until the official 5th June release date. Mercari's approach is a little softer, with the firm stating it will share relevant information with Nintendo and "strengthen measures to remove specific products that violate the Mercari guidelines".
Meanwhile, pre-orders in North America in particular caused quite a bit of havoc for customers, with sites like Walmart and Target buckling under the weight of unprecedented demand. We recently posted a poll asking whether folks in the US had managed to secure a pre-order yet, and a staggering 26% said that they were still looking.
What do you make of this move from Nintendo? Do you think this should extend to sites like eBay too? Let us know with a comment.

I honestly think Nintendo has handled the Switch 2 launch really good (wel at least here in Europe, the US is difficult because of tarrif issues)
But the Japan version of Switch 2 is literally "Region Locked", right?
@Anti-Matter There are 2 versions in Japan. A cheaper Japan-only version and an international Japanse version (same as elsewhere) which is more expensive.
@sanderev Yeah, I still can find multiple stores here that let you pre-order a Switch 2 and will delivery it on June 5th (at least that's what they say)
Seems like stock isn't an issue here
As excluding as it feels to have to pay 20,000円 more than most of my fellow Japan residents, I applaud Nintendo JPs scalper clampdown game.
*sound of middle-aged clapping *
I still think that the price of the Japan model is too low. There is more than enough demand also at a higher price.
@sanderev 100% agree with that. I was happy with how easy was it to just pre-order the Mario Kart Bundle yesterday through My Nintendo Store here in .
I guess limiting it to 1 console per (lifetime) gave everyone fair chance to get one.
@sanderev
Ah....
Glad to hear there is International version with Free Region.
Not particularly a fan of this (apart from Mercari's approach which is the most sensible one in that sense) as it could affect also legitimate stores that might sell on such sites...
@Olliemar28 There's a typo after the quote, "Mercani" instead of Mercari.
I wonder how many drop the price bores will be crawling to the scalpers on launch?
"Walmart and Target buckling under the weight of unprecedented demand." Is it really unprecedented though? The Wii, the Switch, and even the NES classic edition had pretty similar frenzies. They should have known at this point what a big Nintendo launch can be like.
It's a shame eBay don't do something. But with their so called 'buyer protection fee' they'll be making a lot of money from the scalpers sales.
"three flea market site operators"
I can just picture all the old guys w/ duck dynasty beards in their MAGA 2028 T-shirts standing around the church parking lot selling their Switch 2 to the woke hipsters.😂
Sounds like Nintendo is doing the right thing. I'm all for being able to sell anything you own at any price, but you should have to own it before you can sell it. So not letting anyone sell something they don't yet have in hand, even if they already paid for it, makes sense. Let the scalpers sweat it out, not knowing what they'll get after making their not insignificant investment. Sounds like scalpers in the EU won't be making much, may not even be worth the effort.
The more we know how hard a Switch 2 is to come by in the US the worse the scalping will be. Wii was bad for a couple of years, PS5 for a year. Not actually sure about Switch, I was always waiting for the Mario bundle which was announced near launch.
I'm still torn on Switch 2. Or maybe I'm just lazy, depressed, poor and torn on getting out of bed in the morning. So much effort when it's 50' and raining every day..😩
Let those that really want one to get one. Scalping hurts those in worse financial position and does nothing good. Scalping benefitted no one not even Nintendo if they are getting a part of that sales then by all means go for it Scalpers make sure you send part of the Scalping to Nintendo as well.
I'm sure Nintendo has an army of shinobi. They should use them against scalpers. Not for assassination, but to make scalped items magically return to the stores without refund (and assassination if they insist on scalping again).
I’m just kind of laughing at how they call Mercari a flea market. I always said eBay was like a garage sale too. lol
Anyway they need to stop the scalping in America far more than Japan. People here scalp for a living instead of work real jobs, in many cases.
@JohnnyMind I'm sure these restrictions are on only temporary. Meaning secondary and reselling stores will be able to operate normally eventually. They just need to do SOMETHING to stop scalpers.
@Metazoxan Luckily in Rakuten's case it's already confirmed to be only until the official 5th June release date but stilll, it would be nice if they used other means to try to stop scalpers like purchase limits etc. that wouldn't affect actual stores - of course, the best way to do stop scalpers would be that people had patience (there will eventually be more Switch 2 units available) and so didn't buy from them, but unfortunately there's nothing Nintendo and co. can do about that!
