Nintendo has released a new batch of Switch Online icons and the theme is focused on the 'Nintendo Classics' libraries available on Switch and coming soon to the Switch 2. Now, while it might not seem like a big deal, there's one icon that has got some fans very excited.
As you can see in the graphic below, in Wave 3 (featuring the Super Nintendo and recently announced GameCube library), there's a mouse...a Super Nintendo mouse. There's been mounting evidence about for games including this feature being added to the service, and now Nintendo is just casually showing off the accessory as part of this library.
ittedly, it's not the first time Nintendo has highlighted other devices and accessories from its extensive history as icons, but many fans are still hopeful.
"Mario Paint...actually gonna be a thing on this service," said one response on social media. Another Nintendo fan simply typed "Mario Paint confirmed" in all caps alongside an image of the game's box art, while many others were generally in disbelief Nintendo had acknowledged this particular accessory.

Of course, adding to this is the fact the Switch 2's Joy-Con 2 controllers now also have mouse capabilities - allowing you to play games with mouse-like controls. You can even swap on the fly in games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond from normal Joy-Con controls to Joy-Con mouse movement.
also included for this unique SNES accessory.
Do you think we'll see Mario Paint (and mouse for SNES games) make a return at some point in the future? Let us know in the comments.

I'm positive it'll be on NSO at some point, but I really can't see any reason why they'd ever bother to make a new one given it'd basically just be charging for stuff you can do better and cheaper on your computer.
Haha, I was thinking the same thing. Though hopefully they bring other mouse games, too, or add mouse to existing titles that it.
I could see them releasing a new one, because it could be a cool way to show off the Switch 2 mouse mode.
It HAS to.
Why bring back Mouse controls without Mario Paint?
That's like bringing back the Zapper without Duck Hunt.
@Lizuka
To be fair that's true of a lot of less gaming focused hardware. There's a lot of edutainment style and similar software on PC that's easily accessible or free. What makes Mario Paint different is that it's Nintendo themed, right down to the music maker and minigame
Also you could argue that they already released a new version of Mario Paint, Game Builder Garage
@skywake Not only Game Builder Garage, but in some sense Super Mario Maker
I'm hoping for a sequel, but oki.
It would be interesting to see if it happens, or is there is a “share” feature.
Or you know. They could be putting out a follow-up to this:
They also added a new 64DD icon for this week's icons. It wasn't there the last time they did N64 icons a while back.
But I wish icons were really telling the future lol
I do expect a Satellaview icon coming though.
@N00BiSH but Mario paint is a different tool entirely. I’ve played diy. You may only create a 3 second game.
I’ll it I haven’t played Mario paint, but don’t they happen to be entirely different concepts??
Never played this but that mouse really sucked. This could not have held up well and isn't really a game.
We still have a bunch of licensed super nintendo games that I'd like to see before this.
I’d also like Mario & Wario.
@Joeynator3000 There was one Mario Artist. It's was for the 64 DD.
Mario Paint, man I this. I drew Sonic the Hedgehog on there, badly I might add.
@MarcusIsCool DIY does share a lot of the same DNA with Mario Paint. It's not just for making microgames - it has dedicated individual art and music creation tools separate from one another. A lot of DIY's visuals are inspired by or pulled directly from Mario Paint. Creative Exercise is an easter egg in the game:
They're technically different, yes but, they're still very much alike.
@Anti-Matter but can you make music with Yoshi icons and sounds??
I mean, when the whole mouse thing was confirmed, Mario Paint seemed like a shoe in anyway, so...
Would be a good add on with Mario Maker 3
@Yoshi3
And it also have limited key notes.
It’s going to happen. My great-great-great uncle Mervgr left me a letter saying so. And uncles are never wrong.
@Anti-Matter
It's not about that. No one played Mario Paint (for long periods of time) to paint.
People played Mario Paint for three things exclusively:
1) Playing the Fly Swatter game
2) Making terrible music with dogs, cats, and baby sounds
3) Making stupid gif movies with the terrible music of dogs, cats, and baby sounds playing in the background
Are those things anyone can do these days with a regular PC/laptop/tablet/phone with ease?? ABSOLUTELY.
But are those the ONLY tools you have to work with and so it becomes either a trash heap of a creation, masterpiece of art, or a trashsterpiece? No.
Limitations breed creativity. And in of Mario Paint in 2025, it breeds memes.
@N00BiSH
Best game.
Just no Nickleback please.
Where's my N64 mouse nintendo?
It would be foolish not to make a new Mario Paint.
I'm not convinced they'd ever revive the Mario Paint series. Drawing with a mouse isn't as appealing now as it was in the early 90s, they've already made a more robust art series with Art Academy, and I think Nintendo sees Mario Maker as the modern successor to Mario Paint. If they want to put the original on NSO, or build upon the more intricate 64DD Mario Artist series, that's different, but I wouldn't expect to see Mario Paint 2 as a Switch 2 release.
Mario Paint, my beloved! I'd love to see it on NSO for Switch 2 and mouse mode seems to enable it, so why not?
it's probably gonna be part of mariomaker 3
The icon appears the same week as Switch 2 releases! Implies they might actually announce SNES, mouse game(s) for launch potentially and zero other ry icons, hmm..
SNES NSO app also updated last year to allow better for mouse games. Data miners found it
To fully understand why Mario Paint mattered then, you have to realize that in 1992 many households did not own a computer. Those that did were not using sophisticated software, with higher end home systems running on either on a 386 or 486 that topped out ~60 Mhz at a price of $2000+ USD (which was a lot more back then). It was a very different world at the consumer level.
Not sure if all this means Mario Paint, but a lot of creative games channel Mario Paint's intent: we give you a palette, go forth. Mario Maker is an obvious candidate, and it is one thing the Wii U was undisputably superior for with the interface. I'd also look at RPG Maker, or a number of games that customize experience, like rhythm games.
Not sure if the Super Nintendo mouse icon is actually suggesting anything or at least it happening anytime soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if Mario Paint eventually came to NSO now that you don't need an extra peripheral to play it thanks to Mouse Mode on Switch 2 (and would love to see it being added along with at the very least Mario & Wario) - regardless, thanks for letting me know about these icons, definitely going to get them all!
I got my start as an artist animating short films using Mario Paint for school projects and actually won some school district awards & almost always got me extra credit! 😅 I used to animate really short segments, record each clip on a VHS & string them together sequentially into larger short films (no more than 5 mins long - i didn't have a PC in the mid 90s!). I sure wish I still had those VHS tapes. I'd die to have Mario Paint on NSO!!! I'd probably start making short films with it again, maybe together with my kid this time. 😁
Pinning one's hopes on an NSO icon is a stretch to say the least, but just having mouse controls again alone is enough for someone to want Mario Paint back.
But I think it's way more likely Nintendo makes Super Mario Maker 3, a new installment from the series that's heavily inspired by it.
It's not unreasonable to hypothesize a return of a SNES mouse showcase title on another console with mouselike functionality, but then again, Hey You Pikachu never made a comeback on the mic-equipped dualscreeners.
it is 100% happening and i cannot wait
NINTENDO donkey kong 64 would be amazing. Please?

BRING BACK THE STYLUS!
I really want Nintendo to respect, and build upon, the legacy of its previous stylus hardware and software.
The top portion of the Switch, the strip that sticks up above the dock, does not have to have a flat rear that's flush with the rest of the back . A stylus slot could be incorporated there. Pleeeeeaaaaassseeeee 😭
I still own a copy, although I regret not buying a generic laser mouse for the SNES from my local Half-Price Books as the original mouse is a pain to use these days.
Mario Paint was so cool for its time.
Though, I mostly used it to play the Fly Swatter game and used the giant guidebook to make the songs that were listed.
Fun fact, there is a an unofficial online version of the music maker tool should you be so inclined to look for it.
As much as I love Mario Paint, this NSO icon is just as likely to be a timely reminder from Nintendo, emphasising that they were the first to release a mouse for consoles. Which of course many amongst the newer generations may not be aware of. A humble brag, if you will.
@skywake a Mario Paint sequel would be unsellable. The original was a novelty. Digital image manipulation wasn’t something the average person had ever encountered in the early 90s.
Things are different today.
It’ll be an NSO release if anything. Those nostalgic enough will be excited. Only to try it for 5 minutes and realise it’s totally pointless in 2025.
The amount of people who think that people play Mario Paint to paint......
All this and then it'll turn out they're going to re-release Sim City instead.
Which would be A-Okay with me since that game was fire. And occasionally on fire, thanks to Bowserzilla.
That would be cool. I being able to use the SNES mouse with Wolfenstein and Lord of the Rings too. (Of course we won't be getting either of those on NSO Classics!)
Nintendo absolutely could drop Mario Paint in the SNES NSO while also making a new title for Switch 2.
Mario Paint was a terrible game, I can't be alone in thinking this, why would I play THAT over SF2 turbo and mario world, or even sensible soccer or Super tennis?. I would even play the super scope over Mario Paint tsk
Mario Paint 99 is in the works. I can confirm this.
@Trauma_Team_Medic
Wait... I just realized something because of your name.....
BRING BACK TRAUMA TEAM WITH MOUSE CONTROLS!!
@Trauma_Team_Medic
Yes indeed. Trauma Team was the sequel (or just original - not-port) Trauma Centre game on the Wii.
