The summer is here, the Switch 2 is almost here, and that means it's eShop Selects time for May.
This is our very last Switch 1 edition of our monthly feature — but don't worry, things aren't changing with the release of a new console. You'll still be getting your monthly dose of eShop hidden gems that we've reviewed, but Switch 2 eShop exclusives will be ing the party too.
So, let's jump in — like previous editions, our team of writers and contributors have got together to vote for their top three games from all game releases we reviewed from May 2025. The games with the highest total scores make our top three. It really is that simple.
Honourable mentions
Let's get something out of the way, first — Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time would be eligible for this, but we're currently in the process of reviewing it. As such, because it's also coming to Switch 2 on launch day, it will be eligible for votes in our June edition. So don't panic!
Another notable release missing is Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo, a late-May release that's been reviewing extremely well. This is another one we're working on as we speak, which is why you won't spy it below.
So what have we got in the running this month? From our 7/10 eShop exclusives... there's quite a lot to choose from! Every single game got at least one vote from our writers, so here's what just missed out on a top-three spot, followed by the podium:
3rd Place - Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny
We're living in the samurai renaissance, so why shouldn't one of the most well-known video game samurais return to take the spotlight? Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny got a remaster almost 23 years after its original release, and it's still excellent, despite the aspect ratio issues.
This is largely a no-frills release of the PS2 game, with some nice quality-of-life feature like autosave, better weapon switching, and the ability to swap between new and tank controls. It's perhaps not the most popular game in the series, but we love it, scoring it an 8/10.
2nd Place - Please, Touch The Artwork 2
Ahhh, here's a Nintendo Life favourite. Please, Touch The Artwork 2 is a delightfully wacky expansion of Thomas Waterzooi's predecessor, this time focusing on a skeleton and (mostly) the artwork of James Ensor, a Belgian artist. Oh, and the skeleton is the artist himself. Yep.
That should give you an idea of what to expect from the game — it's surreal, absurd, gentle, and relaxing all in one, and for less that $5, an absolute steal. You can play it on your lunch break with a cuppa and you'll be done in under an hour. A worthy 8/10, if we say so ourselves.
1st Place - Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping
Short and sweet seems to be a theme this month, and our eShop Selects winner — and the final Switch 1-only winner — goes to a lovely little 3-hour mystery starring a recovering bread addict duck. Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping is the kind of levity we need in the world right now.
This sequel is a total delight, barmy and silly with a little bit of thought put into it. It's not the most challenging mystery, nor will many of the reveals surprise, but it never failed to make us smile. We scored Duck Detective's second case an 8/10, and we hope to see Eugene McQuacklin return.
< Nintendo eShop Selects - April 2025
Do you agree with our ranking? Tell us about your favourite eShop releases of last month by voting in our poll and sharing your thoughts in the comments.
How we decide our eShop Selects top three: As we reach the end of every month, the Nintendo Life staff vote on their favourite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month, and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select the qualifying games based on their review scores.
Staff are then asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to sit right at the very top of that list; first choice gets three points, second choice gets two points, and third choice gets one point. These votes are then tallied to create a top-three list, with the overall winner taking that month's top prize.

Apart from Pipistrello which would definitely be my pick if available as it appeals to me the most based on what I've seen/heard of it here on Nintendo Life between the articles (speaking of, looking forward to the review whenever it's ready) and comments, Duck Detective seems to be the game I'd enjoy the most so I'm voting for that - looking forward to playing both and also the previous Duck Detective when I can!
I like Duck Detective but it doesn’t take long to complete.
MONSTER TRAIN 2! Absolutely amazing game released this month, totally ignored by this site like the first game. I'd strongly encourage folk to check it out, particularly if you enjoyed Slay the Spire.
Please, Touch The Artwork 2 was scored 8/10?
I didn't buy any May games but the demo of Pipistrello was great. I'm also looking forward to Fantasy Life i once I have Switch 2.
Cato:Buttered Cat
Pipistrello and the Cursed Yo-Yo
You didn't review the right games this month 😜
Onimusha 2, finally! But... where's the physical release Capcom?
I'm surprised NL has never reviewed any of the Fuga: Melodies of Steel trilogy; the third game dropped on May 29th. They're pretty fun tactical RPG games set in the same universe as Solatorobo. CyberConnect2 is better known for their anime fighting games, but they do venture into other projects.
@Milton_Burle
There seems to be a strange unspoken bias against this game here that I haven’t been able to understand.
The first is a gem. One of the best roguelike games ever made. This one is far more complex, but it clicked and I’m hooked again.
I do wish NL would not be so stubborn and just review the game…
Monster Train 2 is truly special.
I’m glad to see it is charting so high in the digital only games chart, despite being blacklisted by NL and every other Nintendo specific site. So bizarre.
Really been enjoying American Arcadia, almost finished (I plan to tonight - a rarity for me to finish games)
Some frame rate hiccups and low resolutions at times though make me think at this time Switch 2 would have been a better target platform
Into the Restless Ruins is fantastic and is my favorite game of the month (behind Pipistella, which is one of the best indie games of the Switch 1’s life span IMO).
playing some loooong PS5 games right now, so have the 2 duck detective games on my switch for palette cleansers haha!
A late month release shouldn't affect a ranked place in this article. Pipistrello should have easily gotten #1 here. I bought and started it last night, and after a few hours of play, I can say that with absolute confidence. Even after the 10 minute demo I was hooked. I'd consider this the last absolute must-have release before the Switch 2 launches. I'm enjoying it more than most top-down Zeldas I've played, and that's saying something.
If it has to do with the fact that it needs to be reviewed first, then a game this good should have gotten higher reviewing priority. I think this will be a true hidden gem that's absolutely eclipsed by the Switch 2 hype, which will be a shame for the success of it.
Onimushi 2 is a decent time. Playing through it currently.
Please Touch the Artwork 2 is swell too.
That's it.
@GregamanX Yeah it seems silly to restrict this poll to only what NL reviewed. Allowing an "other" option is valuable because then the fans can help potentially overlooked games get more fanfare.
This list practically screams “Developers were waiting for next month to release games” to me.
I’d like to try Pipistrello though. It’s sort of an obvious omission.
@KevinLo9 Strange unspoken bias? So stubborn? Blacklisted? So bizarre?
I try to take people's oddly aggressive editorial comments on this site with a grain of salt, but you've truly outdone the others.
NL covered the release of the first: https://nintendolife.sitesunblocked.org/news/2021/08/deck-building_card_battler_monster_train_first_class_is_out_now_on_switch
And then, looky here, they went and included YOUR recommendation of the first game in a community post: https://nintendolife.sitesunblocked.org/guides/community-22-switch-games-we-missed-as-recommended-by-you
NL has also covered the sequel, twice:
https://nintendolife.sitesunblocked.org/news/2025/04/nintendo-highlights-multiple-switch-games-launching-in-may-2025
https://nintendolife.sitesunblocked.org/news/2025/05/nintendo--22nd-may-north-america
Not writing a review for the game doesn't warrant your strange hyperbole. What's even better, had they disagreed with your take on how great the game is, and reviewed it poorly, you'd probably still be foisting your odd hyperbole on us because NL paid it more attention.
Enjoy the game if you like it. Continue to sing its praises in the comment sections. The game is not any lesser for not getting a review from NL.
They haven't "covered" anything. They mentioned it is available for purchase.
Great link work, Stan.
@awp69
Another overlooked gem.
I get that they can't all be reviewed, but how many posts do we need to see about Fantasy Life i?
Haven't purchased new games for a tick but I'm plugging away at Deadly Premonition and I only have 4 more levels of Doom addons before my 2-year journey finally ends.
Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo would have to be my pick though it isn’t on this list in of reviews, but I’m glad it got mentioned. It’s such a great, challenging game that brings back that GBA nostalgia. I might have to check out Duck Detective — it sounds like an interesting, but quick game to beat in a single sitting.
I hadn't heard of Duck Detective so might check it out, sounds like a cool game
Finished Please, Touch the Artwork 2 over the weekend. Wonderful and quirky little game, I really enjoy stuff like this.
@KatiaManagan Alas, I can't let tripe go, sometimes. Great @ work.
