Updated with the May 2025 update. Enjoy!
Game Boy and GB Color titles first arrived on Nintendo Switch Online in February 2023, pleasing many old-school gamers in the process. The various Game Boys — the OG, Pocket, and Color — have a vast library of excellent games, the best of which hold up very well, so seeing some of those gems finally come to Switch was a real treat.
It also gives players who missed out on those Halcyon handheld days decades ago the chance to catch up. But where should you start? What are the best Game Boy games on NSO?
The following ranking of the Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy (+Color) games can point you in the right direction. It's compiled using the Nintendo Life Ratings (out of 10) given to each GB(C) game available on Switch in the West. Please note that this ranking is not set in stone and will automatically fluctuate over time depending on assigned scores and, over time, new additions to the NSO library.
Think a game deserves to place higher? Simply click on the 'star' button and score it yourself. Your personal rating could very well boost its placement in the overall ranking!
Ready to go all 8-bit? Let's take a look at the Game Boy games playable on Nintendo Switch, as ranked by you lovely people. We start at the bottom of the pile...
39. Baseball (GB)
Baseball was never a great game, but the ability to play it with friends meant it was a functional addition to any Game Boy library. Any fond memories you have of Baseball include a second player, we can assure you. Without that second player, even nostalgia won't help; this is not the game you .
You can understand the mechanical simplicity given the hardware, and a certain level of appeal given the lack of portable baseball alternatives in 1989, but this one is not worth chasing these days.
38. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (GBC)
This one was a cross-platform title that also had PlayStation, PC, and Dreamcast versions, and although the diminutive handheld probably wasn't the ideal platform for an immersive Resident Evil-inspired survival horror experience, developer Pocket Studios did an irable job downscaling the prerendered environments to display on Game Boy Color, delivering a decent approximation of the game as it existed on the far more powerful systems.
That's not to say GBC's Super Mario Land 2, then, but a long way from terrible.
37. Quest for Camelot (GBC)
An unloved game based on the unloved Warner Bros. animated film, Quest for Camelot launched on Game Boy Color in the final weeks of 1998. Its appearance as part of Nintendo's Switch Online offering may be down to the platform holder's co-publishing of the original game (along with developer and publisher Titus Interactive).
This top-down action RPG might look a little like Zelda, but this is an exceptionally dull entry in the handheld's library, even by the standards of licensed movie tie-ins.
36. Blaster Master: Enemy Below (GBC)
The mixture of old and new elements gives the amazing original. Sure, many of the same audio/visual elements have been carried over fairly unchanged, but the new bosses and open setting offer up a whole new experience for fans to enjoy.
If you never gave the Blaster Master series a chance (and Switch owners don't have much excuse considering that both this and the NES original are available with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription), this great Game Boy Color title is as good a reason as any to get stuck in.
35. Mega Man II (GB)
Mega Man II isn't the greatest entry in the Blue Bomber's library. Removed from inevitable comparisons to the NES versions of Mega Man 2 and 3, judging the game on its own clunky merits does it no favours, either. The unique content is limited to a forgettable new boss and new weapon, and perhaps the shortest Wily stage in history.
Unless you're an absolute completionist — or afflicted with the same morbid curiosity we are — there's no reason to grab this entry over the multiple good interpretations of Mega Man on Game Boy. Definitely play the others first.
34. Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge (GB)
Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge was a decent first swing at a handheld Mega Man game. It's fairly fun, but you get the feeling you're playing a watered-down version of the NES games, which will end up making you want to play them instead.
The game is over in a flash — with just six stages, it's shorter than every other game in the series. Thankfully, Capcom noted this and the remaining four Game Boy entries each have 10 or more stages and are, overall, more impressive than this first attempt. Not bad for a fresh(mega)man, though.
33. The Sword of Hope (GB)
A turn-based adventure/RPG from Kemco, a 1992 sequel which took four years to come to North America (and never made it to Europe until a Virtual Console release on 3DS).
Cards on the table: we haven't played this one. If you're after a great overview, we recommend Jeremy Parish's Game Boy World video that looks at the game, plus some Kemco history. And now it's on NSO, there's no excuse for us not to check it out.
32. Alleyway (GB)
Aside from the Mario cameos (if you pay attention when starting the game, you'll see that Mario himself jumps into the paddle and pilots it, and many of the bonus stages are shaped like Mario characters), there's not much to say about Alleyway. You bounce the ball with your paddle to break all the blocks on the screen, in time-honoured Breakout style.
At its best, it's simply Arkanoid without all the fluff. If you grew up with it or you're after some reasonably compelling block-breaking, you might get a kick out of it.
31. BurgerTime Deluxe (GB)
Quite a bit longer than Data East's original arcade game, BurgerTime Deluxe's 24 all-new levels are sure to entertain, but it won't require a lengthy investment.
You play Peter Pepper, a chef whose restaurant has been invaded by several pieces of living food, like sausages and eggs. Somehow, the only way to get rid of these pests is to create gigantic burgers by walking across the components — the buns, meat, lettuce — spread out across various platforms connected with ladders.
It might not win an award for realism, but its gameplay still holds up well today, with strategy required to outwit the burger-hatin' enemies. Suitably satisfying fast-food fodder, then.
30. Castlevania Legends (GB)
Released in the wake of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night's astonishing critical success, Castlevania Legends introduces the first mainline female hero, Sonia Belmont, who was technically, chronologically the first-ever Belmont to fight Dracula. At least she was until Koji Igarashi became the producer of the series and the game's story became non-canon.
Following the amazing Belmont's Revenge was no easy task, but Legends is an inferior outing in almost every regard, bar the fact that it came with battery backup so you could save your progress. The visuals, controls, and music are all worse than they are in Belmont's Revenge, but that hasn't stopped Legends from becoming one of the most desirable and expensive Game Boy games.
It's worth a brief look, but don't pay silly money for it, especially when it's available on NSO.
29. Kirby's Star Stacker (GB)
If you enjoy falling block puzzlers, then Kirby's Star Stacker is a fun little one of those. The Round Clear mode gives you some fixed levels to play through, after which you'll be left with high score attempts, just like most puzzlers.
It got a Japan-exclusive Super Famicom remake very late in that system's life, although it never came to the West because the mainstream market for SNES games had disappeared by 1998. All told, it's worth a look.
28. Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble (GBC)
Released in 2000 in Japan and the following year in North America, this GBC spin-off never came to PAL shores, at least not until it was added to Nintendo Switch Online in June 2023. The cartridge included a tilting sensor which enabled you to control Kirby by rolling him around levels, guiding him to the goal.
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble isn't ground-breaking, but it's a fun Kirby curio and worth playing if you can track it down. Make sure you're playing it in a regular GBC or GBA, though — the accelerometer doesn't like being held upside down in a GBA SP, and you won't get very far plugging it into a Game Boy Player, either. Thankfully, the version on Switch uses that console's gyro sensors.
27. Survival Kids (GBC)
Best described as a cross between the TV series Lost and The Legend of Zelda, Survival Kids (or Stranded Kids as it was known in Europe) was groundbreaking in how much agency it affords the player; despite looking like your typical cute and cuddly RPG, it allows you to tackle the game at your own pace and in a largely non-linear fashion.
Gameplay revolves around tracking various elements such as hunger, thirst, and tiredness, and there's even a crafting system present that enables you to create weapons and tools. Survival Kids is a standout GBC title and got a Japan-only sequel in 2000. The series would go on to inspire the Switch 2 'reimagining' for the system's launch.

As important as the original Tetris was, I find it difficult to play these days.
Not for the lack of hold-piece or hard drop, but for how hard you need to mash left/right to get the piece to move in time, and how quickly the pieces lock in. It doesn't have the finesse and motor-rhythm that modern Tetris games do.
Besides, if you've got Switch Online, you've got Tetris 99! And Puyo Puyo Tetris has a free demo with unlimited Marathon Mode, too.
Can’t wait to see what games will be added this year. Hope we can go back to 3 games monthly like when NES and SNES where new seeing how big the GB libraries are.
Links Awakening DX should be #1
I actually really enjoyed Alone In The Dark at the time. Quite limited, and a bit shonky in places, but it was rather impressive back then. I will have to re-visit it.
As a human being, I can say this list is wrong. LA should be numero uno
Everyone go play Wario Land 3 right now.
@Dr_Corndog Can't, too busy playing Warioware.
Wario land 3 is easily the best one here
"Link's Awakening" should be #1, IMO.
"Tetris" is undeniably a great and important Gameboy game, but that's more due to historical significance (It was just the perfect title for the Gameboy at its launch and definitely helped push consoles in those early times), than because of gameplay merit.
I actually really like Metroid II. Even more than Super because I am a dirty sinner with the wrong opinion.
I have fond memories of Link's Awakening, but I will stick to the remake. It's just as good and doesn't have the interface problem.
@WiiWouldLikeToPlay The Lord's home will always have a spot set aside for those who repent...
hahahhahahahahahhhahahaha
@Dizzymario Came to say the same, but you beat me to it. Might break out my 3DS to play through it again. Would love a new one in the same style of gameplay, but with Shake It's art style.
Dumb question maybe - can the NES controllers be used to play these GB games (and can SNES controllers be used for gba?)
Would also be nice to play be able to play 2-player Tetris on one switch/screen
Game & Watch Gallery sounds kinda lame, but when you start playing and get hooked on the unlockables, it's a blast to play.
My wishlist for Game Boy:
Donkey Kong '94 (arguably the best game on the entire system)
Wario Land II (color version of course)
Pokémon Pinball (with rumble )
Kid Dracula (GB version is not in the CV Anniversary collection)
Mega Man V (the best / most original GB Megaman)
Mega Man Xtreme
Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters (A game that was not even released in Japan!)
Mole Mania
Trip World
Balloon Kid
Crystalis (NES version is already in NSO)
Lufia
Harvest Moon series
Dragon Warrior series (including Dragon Warrior Monsters)
Donkey Kong Land series
Kirby has no business being above Metroid 2. The game is boring without copy abilities
Played the hell out of Mario Land 2 as a lad.
I hope we eventually get Wario Land: Mario Land 3 too. I actually prefer it to Wario Land 3.
I mostly agree with the list, though I’d put Super Mario Land 2 above Wario Land 3, and Link’s Awakening above Tetris.
@EarthboundBenjy
I believe Myths and Monsters is on the VC on 3ds.
What logic exactly did they follow when putting together these games for the service? Wario 3, Mario Land 2 and G&W 3? It seems they forgot these are sequels. I would’ve thought the numbers would make it obvious.
Alone in the Dark isn't that great, but it is pretyt impressive that they were able to cram that into a GBC cart! Technically, it's pretty cool.
@MS7000 new wario land is my biggest hope for the switch tbh
@Dizzymario I had a dream that happened, and it was glorious.
Yeah, Tetris first doesn't make sense nowadays, but other than that this list is great!
I’m so happy Wario Land 3 is one of the “launch” titles, it’s one of favorite Game Boy games. Such a fun game!
Literally the first game I loaded up was Tetris. It’s just an OG Gameboy classic pairing. Like Jenny was to Forrest, “We was like peas and carrots!”
Links Awakening is great but, I'd rather have another GB game especially because they have the Remaster on Switch and then Links Awakening on the Zelda Game and Watch.
That Alone in the Dark game is a very ambitious title indeed, the fact that Atari (Infogrames, maker of the Atari VCS) even attempted to make it as close to the console versions as they could is impressive. Knowing that Capcom attempt this same trick for their Resident Evil 1 GBC port and failed to released it while Atari did shows that Atari is not afraid to go above and beyond with their ports at the time.
Tetris is a good game but it's just... Tetris, nothing new. That's why I wouldn't put it so high on the list, but then again it's not my list and I respect any choice in that matter.
Can't wait to play Samus 2: Metro
My dads dogs, uncle’s cousin works for Nintendo and Pokémon comes to GameBoy next month
... so Tetris 8/10... Link's Awakening DX 10/10
1.Tetris
2. Link's Awakening. ???
Kids, if youve not played these games before and wondering the best order to try them out by rating... dont follow/trust NLife's order. In ALL of history, Tetris was NEVER rated anywhere near as good as Awakening!!?? Baffling!
Just finished Mario Land 2 for the Xth time. Wasn’t that laggy on my OG GB 😅
But I’m at least 25 years younger now and enjoy the good old games.
I don't have the slightest desire to play any of them in 2023. Time es and extremely old games become boring to me.
I genuinely can’t wait to play a game from 1989 that debuted on a monochromatic, 3 inch screen with 4 shades of green as its entire palette on a modern 43 inch 4K tv at 1080p upscaled.
What a time to be alive!
Yeah my main man Wario up in the top 3
@GameOtaku
I honestly think they might be going on a quality basis. Since the Switch’s life span is winding down, I have a feeling that they’re not going to put many more games on the system beyond the ones shown, and they’ll hopefully expand it next console. They’re hitting the Game Boy and GBA’s greatest hits, and Wario Land 3 and Mario Land 2 are the best games in their respective series on Game Boy.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, is one of my favorite games of all time, and my favorite 2d Mario. I only wish it was as colorful as its level design and music.
If you're thinking of playing Link's Awakening DX, just skip it and do the Switch remake instead. The additonal buttons for item control simply makes it a way superior version.
Alone in the dark inspired resident evil , not the other way around..since the franchise is four years older
Interwsting collection. Some surprises, and some really weird exeptions (mario land)
@fluggy this is actually the ranking..
@Cool-Breeze Anything can be used to play anything. Whether there's enough buttons to pull it off is obviously something that you need to consider when choosing a controller, but no matter what Nintendo controller you connect, A is going to be A.
Short answer: Yes.
@EarthboundBenjy Man, if they put Pokemon Pinball on here, I'm dead. I played that SO much as a kid. My high scores were around 2.2 billion on the blue table and 1.6 on the red. Doubt I'll ever achieve such lofty numbers again, but if I get a billion on either again I'll be happy!
@JakedaArbok
The best games? That is a matter of personal preference. I’d argue Mario Land 3: Wario Land is better than Golden Coins. Alone in the Dark GBC is one of the best games on the system? Really?!
I'm not a fan of Link's Awakening DX. I find the colorization off-putting, like a badly colorized black and white film. If you want to play the game in its original monochrome form, I recommend The Legend of Zelda Game & Watch.
I'm just hoping that with the 3DS eShop going away for good next month, that they port over all the games that are currently on there for sale.
@delt75 ALL the games? Frankly that's a ridiculous expectation. Do you think ports are something that a dev just snaps their fingers to miraculously create? Especially for games that were originally on a system with such a radically different two-screen display. Plus the touch input, any AR elements, any 3D stuff that mattered... All that ranges from difficult to impossible to port. And you're asking for that to happen for hundreds if not thousands of games.
I love ‘Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins’.
I never personally had an original Game Boy system (my first Nintendo handheld, not counting the Game & Watch, was the GBA) but both of my younger sisters had one (about 30 years ago).
[I was always spending my money on NES games instead.]
Both of them would share their Game Boys with me though - I the two games that they had that I would play the most were ‘The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle’ and ‘Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins’.
To this day, that Mario game is still on my list as one of the all-time greatest Mario games.
If the drip feed these especially GBA being in the highest band it’s a joke. They have so many in house titles on both they can give us proper regular updates.
I’m stoked alone in the dark is there. That’s awesome
@ketrac
The switch remake makes some of the jumps a lot harder. There were many places where in the original and DX I could access a lot easier.
@Bret Sorry if you were confused. This is a thread about Game Boy and GBA games, and when I said I’d like to see all of them ported over, I was referring to said Game Boy, GBA games. Haha
I'd say Link's Awakening is the best game by far, but I am very disappointed that Nintendo only made the DX version available. Feels like an oversight to me because it means you can only play the game in Gameboy Color format and the Original and Pocket filters simply don't work.
Mario 6 Golden Coins is great fun, but it's ridiculously easy to play today. I it being a fair challenge when I played it at launch(!) but I suspect a combination of age and playing many, many more Mario games since has made it easier.
It's interesting to look back at actually because it highlights the huge challenge Nintendo have with their next 2D Mario game. Especially after the Mario Maker games! Will be intriguing to see what they come up with that looks and plays well, presents a challenge, and isn't labelled more of the same.
Tetris is historically a super important game, and a great one, but Link's Awakening is one of the most refined games I ever played. Alone in the Dark, while I can see (I have eyes) that it doesn't hold up today or even in its own day remotely compared to any other version of itself, I must say it is among my favourite GBC games, and it's not an RE clone when it succeeded where RE failed: an ACTUAL GBC version, that works, was released, and impressed the hell out of me back then. I still have it complete in box.
@delt75 OH. That's different. Hahaha, sorry.
@GameOtaku
Mario Land 2 and 3 are vastly different games. When you’re marketing a console, you kinda want to have a Mario game on there.
As for Alone in the Dark, that’s kind of an exception to the rule, I can’t argue that that’s weird. I still think the selection overall is weird, I’m just trying to get into Nintendo’s head regarding this.
Please give us Fire Red, Leaf Green, Sapphire and Ruby, oh and Wario Land 4 !!!!!!!!
@Bret Hahaha! No worries!
For those complaining about the ratings, this is off of NL 's self reported game scores, averaged. If you believe Link's Awakening is a 10/10 game, then rank it as such. As of the time of this posting, Tetris is at 9.1 and Link's Awakening is 9.06. Convince others in the comment section why the game should be ranked higher instead of just saying it should be, you might convince someone to actually rank the game, or at the very least possibly change their opinion.
Great selection to start with, really. :v
I'm finally going to play Mario Land 2, and I've been meaning to complete Gargoyle's Quest since forever, so I'll get to that too!
I when the Game Boy was new and checking out the coverage of those early games in Nintendo Power. The one that stuck with me most was Gargoyle's Quest and was one of the main reasons I wanted a Game Boy. It was really hard for me at first too and I wondered if maybe I would regret it, but it did play well and I kept going back to it. It was one of my favorites on the system. Another favorite was Metroid 2. I hadn't played anything quite like it and it had me glued to my Game Boy for a while. I had no anticipation for it, but a school friend of mine got it and told me I needed to get it, so I did.
Playing Super Mario Land 2 again,
it strikes me as pretty ahead of its time in how you can play the zones in any order.
I wonder why the rankings have Link's Awakening at only a 9.06. I wonder if people have given it a 9 instead of a 10 because they're comparing it to other Zelda games when they should be comparing it to other Game Boy games.
I have never understood the acclaim that Gameboy Tetris continues to get. It by far has the worst controls of any Tetris I have played, not counting touch controls. NES Tetris is my preferred way to play pure Tetris, and Tetris 99 is the best special version of Tetris. Tetris DS is another standout.
Played the heck out of Metroid II and then Tetris. Best version of Tetris ever. Sorely missing Solar Striker and Alleyway.
I am so surprised (but very pleased) that they included Link's Awakening. Especially since they have the remake.
And Metroid II.
And Tetris!!! I played so much Tetris on my OG Game Boy way back when.
This is great!
Wario Land 3! Zelda! Mario Land 2! 3 masterpieces!
I will be extremely blunt here, as a Zelda fan. Link's Awakening DX did not age well. It carries many, MANY flaws that are frankly so minor yet so frequent that they build up to become very frustrating. Once you get to play the Oracle games, you will understand just how painful of a game it is to play Link's Awakening.
Gargoyle's Quest needs to be way higher than it is. It is a masterpiece of the OG Game Boy library. The music is phenomenal and the gameplay is * chef's kiss *
Besides that Link's Awakening of course, which was quite an achievement given the hardware. Tetris should not be on top. It's fun and loved by many, but in no way is it a game I'd play for longer than 15 minutes at a time.
@Nua Sorry for not going into detail, but there were way too many articles yesterday (and yes, I know it's a rating).
As to why I think Tetris first doesn't make sense nowadays? There are so many other, much better ways to play practically the same game on Switch and even strictly Switch Online while every other game on the list is either exclusively on GB(C) or have remakes that, while arguably better, don't completely replace them (Link's Awakening has the photos, Metroid II and Samus Returns have too many differences to list them here).
Link's Awakening was my first and, as much as I love Breath of the Wild, might still be my favourite Zelda game.
Slightly off topic - is there multiplayer or even 2 player available for Tetris on the Gameboy app???? The wife had a Gameboy back in the day, as did I... but she never played 2 player Tetris. I'd love the chance to have my a** kicked by her. She'd definitely beat me. But 2 player Tetris is so much fun, I'll put up with the whooping
I just finished Super Mario Land 2... again... I have lost track of how many times I've beaten that game. I don't know why, but it never gets old for me.
@JohnnyMind I didn't solo you out, there were just multiple people posting as if NL made the list instead of letting the averages do it.
I don't know what I would personally rate Tetris GB as, but in of importance it's up there in GameBoy history with the first Pokemon games. However, a game's legacy shouldn't impact it's review score.
@Nua I know, I just wanted to rectifiy my mistake!
@Hansmolemann There is, for Game Boy (Color) there's multiplayer locally and online (friends only) for 2 players while for Advance up to 4!
I finally got the Expansion Pak, and I'm pretty happy with the selection of games! I was a naysayer but I found a way to make it affordable for me and I like what's here. ☺️👍
ok here's the meat of the compliment sandwich: why give us links awakening DX, but not Tetris DX? I cannot understand why DX is so often overlooked. is there something y'all just don't like about that game, that I missed?
over all though very cool! glad to have some of these in my life again in a relevant way!
UPDATE 2024 i let my sub expire, and I wont be resubscribing. I was really hopeful last year that they would make something great out of this, but ultimately they did not, and I found myself not using it as much as i thought i would. whomp whomp.
Metroid II and Zelda are my tops. Apparently I need to try Gargoyle’s Quest! Can’t wait for Pokemon too!
Burgertime should be top 5!
I would love to play Kirby Tilt and Tumble, but I couldn't figure out how to make him move on the Switch! I tipped and titled and laid it down flat, but nothing doing for me. I am sure it is blindingly obvious, but couldn't get it going when I tried
i get that these articles are to boost engagement with your review/ratings system. god bless.
but, given that no one agrees with what a "7.0" means (and most completely ignore the provided legend,) a "poll style" vote would be more appropriate, here. especially since many of the reviews generated by these articles are most likely 10.0s and 0.0s in order to nudge s' favorite or most disliked games around in the rankings, thus sullying the merit of the actual review system in and of itself.
I know we are too far down this road at this point but i always think of this when reading these lists.
(plus any list that ranks alone in the dark below quest for camelot is of questionable value.)
@Mana_Knight
were you using stock joycons or a pro controller? that is my first thought.
Nice to see that the screenshots for original game boy games here mostly uses stylish monochrome instead of those garish four color palettes, that you so often see when original Gameboy games are featured.
While I’m sure that some found it exiting to actually get more than one color on the old Gameboy games when they got their Super Gameboy or Gameboy Color, these garish colors doesn’t hold up well compared to the more subdued shades of green or grey that these games were originally designed for.
I've been enjoying the Gameboy app for the last fews days. A new way to play the console with a modern screen and giant adult thumbs. Although I love my old handhelds, the hardware definitely holds me back.
@-wc- The joycons attached to The Switch in hand held. Does it not work that way?
@Mana_Knight
it ought to!
but, for example I have Hori joycons that offer alot of benefit, but lack gyro.
if you have a pro con, maybe try playing with that, docked. just for process of elimination. no idea why the joycons that your switch came with wouldnt work, though. good luck, let us know if you figure out what's going on! ✌️
@StevenH
I'd also like to see a Game and Watch gallery on switch, with many if not every G&W ever made on it, enhanced graphics (beyond gameboy style, imagine mario maker like switchable "styles" for the games for instance!) and lots of different modes. there could even be reimagined classics with 4p multiplayer, or warioware style minigame modes. 🤤
but will probably get 4 new splatoons and 15 animal crossings before we get anything that interesting out of 2020s Nintendo Corp. 🫤
@Perpetual_Change
"those garish four color palettes"
I dont pretend that the colors make these games beautiful or anything, but I really appreciated the enhanced contrast of having complimentary sprite and background colors on GBC and Super gb for alot of my old favorites ✌️
I also really liked the freedom to choose between multiple color pallettes (or not) for each game, to find the one that worked best for that game! 👍
Quest for Camelot gets way too much hate. I really enjoyed that game as a kid...
Surprised not to see Pokemon here!
I keep forgetting Gargoyle's Quest is on there. I need to play that one.
@-wc- I think that you have probably hit the nail on the head. It obviously needs joycons that can do wireless. The pair I use at the moment do not, they are fixed place only. I do have an official set too, but I got fed up of having official ones playing up with drift & disconnect. The 3rd party one I have is a third of the price and lasted three times as long so far......
I will give it a go with the official ones and see if it works! Thank you
@-wc- as a diehard Splatoon fan, I take offense to that.
@playingwithpower86 agreed
@Mana_Knight
hope that does it! glad I could help, my friend ✌️
@batmanbud2
lol I can see that, it was an offensive remark 😆 i have friends into splatoon, and I'm sure it's a fun game, just not my particular flavor of jam. ✌️
@-wc-
Yeah, I can definitely understand that it was a cool upgrade for the time. Both for the freedom to experiment with palettes and also because first, there's "no color", and then there are.
But I don't like that showing these games with four-color palettes has become the standard way of displaying imagery from the games. I don't think it does the artwork justice.
@Perpetual_Change
"I don't like that showing these games with four-color palettes has become the standard way of displaying imagery from the games. I don't think it does the artwork justice."
i can dig it. they are "monochrome games" after all. 👍
Two of my favorites, which aren't on the list are Final Fantasy Adventure (Zelda clone) and Crystalis (NES remake / Zelda clone). Elevator Action was also fun, for its time. Same goes for Final Fantasy Legends II (jrpg).
It's always very fun/funny observing the dichotomy between the review and reader score in these kinds of lists: seeing the reviewer absolutely rip into Alleyway while the reader aggregrate has it ranked higher than positively-reviewed stuff like Blast Master: Enemy Below is endlessly enjoyable to analyse XD
The Game Boy NSO library is a strange one for me as, for the most part, it's been surprisingly underwhelming. Sure, there are absolutely highlights (chief among them being Mario Land 2 and the three 2D Zelda games) and I massively respect the system from a historical standpoint....but YIKES there is not a lot of substance to most of the games on it 😅
Still hopeful we'll get something like Gen 1-2 of Pokemon though; those games getting added would make me do a complete 180 on the entire app XD
Had finished Persona 4 Golden last night and needed a palette cleanser. Thank you Nintendo with Super Mario Land - a game I couldn’t beat in my childhood! Will jump on 2 next
Just finished Mario Land 1, and I can safely say it's definitely worth playing. It ain't much, and it's nowhere near the top of the list as far as 2D Marios go, but it's got some solid level design and awesome music. There wasn't a single level that frustrated me, which, in the realm of 2D Mario, is something I can only also say about Super Mario Bros Wonder (even the handheld NSMBs had a few stinkers each).
Slightly warm take but the Oracle games are better than Link’s Awakening in every regard except for plot.
The original Link’s Awakening in monochrome is still the definitive version of that game. A lot of the colors in the DX version are garish and unpleasant, like in many re-colored game boy original games. Adding an overpowered item late in the game was also not a great idea. But that does of course not mean that the DX version is bad, in most ways it is still an excellent game.
The later remake is also very cool, but the major change in esthetics makes it into a different game altogether.
@Perpetual_Change Main reason for that is because we didn't have these newfangled backlit screens back then. Colors were harder to see unless they were this vivid.
Mario Land is incredibly nostalgic for me. Reminds me of the early 90s back when I only had two gameboy games, Mario and Tetris. Simpler times to be sure.
So V IS the best GB Mega Man. Good to know. . .
Monster Max should be in the top 5 along with Pokemon Crystal, Silver & Gold.
And yet, the mainline Pokémon games are still not part of NSO. What a waste!
I respect the original. I have fond memories playing it but after playing the Link’s Awakening remake I couldn’t go back to it. The remake is just perfection IMO.
@FatWormBlowsASparky Monster Max is an incredible game. Great call-out!
I literally just beat Super Mario Land 2 for the first time yesterday (never had it on GBA and never had original gameboy) Its a very solid platformer for the Original Gameboy its my favorite Gameboy game hands down.
My top 5:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (GBC)
2. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (GB)
3. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC)
4. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (GBC)
5. Wario Land 3 (GBC)
Shame Parodius isn't in.
@Dr_Corndog I stumbled into Wario 3 last night and was entertained until the desert level got too finicky
@cmbaum
I love you.
I really hope Super Gameboy functionality gets added to certain NSO titles because Donkey Kong GB really benefits from it.
@Perpetual_Change contrary to you im exactly the opposite
i prefer gameboy color games than gb games
cause i really dislike the monochrome black and white of gb games, i know is cause at those years they were many technical limitations regarding pocket consoles and they had those LCD sreens but i wish most of these had gotten new color DX versions when gameboy color came out like link's awakening
and the lack of color has turned me down from playing most gb games
maybe is cause i grew around the late Gameboy advance and early ds era when all the games had really vibrant and detailed sprite colors and is just a case of generational gap
Wario Land 2 > Wario Land 3
