Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time has completely consumed many people's free time over the past week. The game officially launched on Switch on 21st May, but with an early access period on other consoles kicking things off on the 18th, player counts have been high and word-of-mouth has been incredibly strong. And Level-5 has responded, in kind, by announcing some free DLC.
Spotted by RPG Site, Level-5 will be releasing DLC "due to popular demand" for the cost of absolutely nothing. While we know little about the DLC, including when it will be released, President and CEO Akihiro Hino has confirmed that new recipes, the ability to wield high-rarity weapons, and new content to "update the world" is coming.
Now, in reality, this DLC was probably already in the pipeline, but public reaction to the game has likely prompted an earlier announcement. Which is great! Particularly given concerns around the game prior to release.
Footage on Switch wasn't exactly looking sparkling early on, and news that the development team had to restructure and rework much after lead producer Keiji Inafune — best known for his work on Mega Man — left the company during development. But it appears that things are looking extremely bright for the game.
Plus, from what we've played so far, we're having a great time with Fantasy Life i. Check back for our review soon, and if you're on the fence, check out our video to see just how the game runs on Switch.
How are you finding Fantasy Life i? What do you want to see from the free DLC? Let us know in the comments.

I hope they bring back pets too in the future! ^^
I want to see proper multiplayer.
Saw the reviews and heard so many good things about it. The many and long delays were pretty much worth it. It helps that knowing ass-hat Keji Inafune left was a super bonus.
I'll be snagging it on the weekend.
Hey All - long-time reader/first-time poster
I'm curious if anyone knows how updates/patches work for N. America (I'm in Canada), should I purchase the JPN physical edition?
I know DLC is likely region-locked, but what of updates/patches?
Thanks!!
@Billy_Lee You should be able to just update it from the home screen like any other game. Region doesn't matter for that.
Now release a physical (outside Japan) please!
I had high expectations for the 3DS release; however, I recall the reviews were not particularly favorable. How did it ultimately perform?
@BenAV Ahhh, ok - I was kinda hoping this would be the case! (DLC not so much of a concern if I'm locked out of that)
Have you/anyone heard if due to the popularity they may reconsider ESRB physicals with a different publisher?
Love to hear that both the game is so popular and it's getting free DLC due to that - looking forward to playing it myself when my physical copy arrives (and maybe also the Switch 2 patch depending on when that comes out, it's getting more and more difficult to resist starting as soon as I have even just the game itself)!
@Clark2k I'm linking the Metacritic Critic Reviews, which are mostly favorable. It averaged out to 73 percent, but I saw plenty of 90s and 80s (out of 100) https://www.metacritic.com/game/fantasy-life/critic-reviews/?platform=3ds
I've got friends who swear by Fantasy Life being a secret gem on the 3DS. If you enjoyed the first one, then absolutely go for the sequel. Those same friends are having a great time right now.
Switch Up said the Switch port is great and I'm inclined to wait for the Switch 2 version, but it sounds like people are really enjoying it.
I'm only like five hours in but the performance on switch hasn't bothered me at all (I'm excited to get the Switch 2 and bask in the upgrade)
As a longtime Layton fan, it makes me really happy to see Level 5 having a big hit with this
@Clark2k Fantasy Life on the 3DS is awesome. I am very happy I ed it and the DLC before the 3DS eShop closed.
I did a PreOrder for the import physical to get the game.
I wanted to buy this on PC/Steam yesterday but when I discovered it has Kernel level Anti Cheat Idk what to do now. I'm all for cracking down on people who try to gain an unfair advantage over everybody else but not at the Kernel level. Such software poses a potential very serious security risk.
Now if we can just get a physical release in the States.
love how suprised they sound
@MiltonHolmes
I've seen some reviewers saying the fuzziness is causing motion sickness in players prone to that, which I am. I'd even noticed it a bit just watching Switch players on YouTube. Before I'd heard about it.
Have you noticed anything like that? If so, I'll probably get it on Steam.
@RubyCarbuncle
I didn't understand anything you wrote. Can you please explain?
EDIT: never mind. I googled it and it sounds scary.
Hopefully, we get a huge expansion dlc like the first game on 3DS.
@k8sMum I'm not prone to motion sickness so I can't speak on it. That said, it is a definitely little fuzzy at points (some tiled surfaces fizzle and shadow draw is noticeable) so if you play on PC a lot then steam is probably a better bet for the performance boost!
One other thing: the game does have some daily check-in quest type stuff which i think suits playing portable, if you've got a steam deck then you're completely sorted
What, about the Switch version? I have been playing it on my NSW LITE for a couple of hours and so far everything is perfect, the visuals, the performance etc.
I'm so happy the game turn out to be great! Just as I hoped, after the fantastic 3DS game.
I'll wait for the Switch 2 version though, it would be awesome if they released a physical edition in the West by then!
@k8sMum Yeah it's just too risky I think. I'm no cyber expert but I don't like the idea of a piece of software having full access to my PC's OS and hardware. The scary thing is some Kernel level Anti Cheat software continues to run even after you quit and close the game.
@IronMan30
Ya, as soon as I watched the switch up review I purchased the deluxe edition and plan to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as soon as that releases.
For now I can output the docked mode on my OLED handheld screen and overclock.
It’s definitely more fun than I thought it would be. Beginning of the game and I was questioning if it was a waste of money. But it quickly improved my opinion.
EDIT: Port is well done, I wish the first party 2D whatever Zelda games ran this well instead of the terrible performance.
@k8sMum Im prone to motion sickness to some degree (5 minutes of riding horse in RDR 2 in first person will do, riding subway in Star Citizen for 5 minutes will do) but have no issues with this game.
that's all nice and stuff but can we get a physical?
Thats my first Fantasy Life game and it hooked me from the beginning.
Decided on release date to buy it (for Switch) and it impressed me. Its really a quality game. I like the graphics, the music, the athmosphere. Its a fun game thats cute and funny, its brings me to laugh. It seems to be really packed with content and its a bit overwhelming for me to keep on track whats happening in which timeline. The soundtrack lives rentfree in my head.
Was really worth the waiting time👍
I have no clue what kinda game this is?
Is it something like animal crossing?
@RubyCarbuncle
I appreciate that you brought it up as I knew nothing about it and the possible risks, so thanks.
@JaxonH nice. It seems the upgrade path will be relatively low cost (maybe it won't cost anything for Westerners, but who knows). I hope you like it!
@Gorlock
I cannot play any first person games at all. I used to try watching my kids play Mario Kart and would get so nauseous I'd have to leave the room.
I watched a video by (I think) a Miss Bubbles who said the Switch version was horrible for triggering motion sickness, went on and on about it. I understand that it's going to be different for each individual, but her review had me worried as I can't afford to buy pricey games and not be able to play them.
I ed the game y'day. I played a couple hours last nite and am thankfully having no problems. I am careful about not having the camera set too fast and not swinging it around as that can trigger it.
Thanks for your input.
@k8sMum Glad to hear it!
Physical only in Japan (Switch and PS5) is a bad thing.
I would love this on a proper media. Level-5 did Snackworld, which was great and never needed any update. It is still V1 on Switch.
I hope it's free!
They already charged for DLC!
@BenAV
Not exactly true...
If there is a JPN version of a game versus a NA version of a game, cross DLC won't work.
Only actual all region games will work with all DLC.
There are only a few games like this.
Even Fantasy Life has two versions.
JPN or Asian.
Depending on which you have, you have to get the corresponding DLC.
The camera needs to be fixed!
The angle sucks!
I miss having the Dagger
@Spider-Kev They were asking about patches, not DLC.
@BenAV patches should be the same
@Spider-Kev It's not the same.
The game looks fine for switch. Reviewers need to stop playing it on Steam or PS5 etc and then review it for Switch. It totally clouds one's judgement.
had no idea this existed but gonna check it out
@undeadly ok, nevermind. just watched the trailer. not my thang
@BenAV You are correct! Patches/updates, not DLC. I appreciate you answering my original question, and also for clarifying!
