The preservation experts at Digital Eclipse have today lifted the lid on the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection for the Switch, Switch 2 and multiple other platforms. Yes, fighting game fans are finally getting a new collection in this brutal and bloody series, and it's arriving this year.
Digital Eclipse (also known for its work on Atari 50) will bring together all the "essential games" from Mortal Kombat's earlier years into one package. There'll be "over 20 different versions of legendary games" to begin with. Here are the titles confirmed so far – covering everything from the arcade, SNES generation to Game Boy Advance iterations:

- Mortal Kombat – 1992: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear
- Mortal Kombat II -1993: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, 32X
- Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES, Genesis
- Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES
- Mortal Kombat 4 – 1997: Arcade
- Mortal Kombat Advance – 2001: Game Boy Advance
- Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – 2002: Game Boy Advance
- Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition – 2003: Game Boy Advance
- ???
This Kollection includes additional modern enhancements as well such as online play and rollback netcode.
Similar to its previous collections, Digital Eclipse will use an "interactive documentary format" to also explore how Mortal Kombat has "changed the way society perceived video games". This includes exclusive interviews, and first-hand commentary from the original developers Ed Boon, John Tobias, John Vogel, and Dan Forden.
Additionally, players will be able to explore a timeline of the original series' storyline, the character histories, the secrets of the series, behind-the-scenes development, rare concept art, archival footage, and much more.
Are you excited about this collection? Let us know in the comments.

You know I never thought that WB would be working with Digital Eclispe on anything retro Midway related together, but I am glad to be proven wrong.
This is awesome. I wish they'd include Mythologies Sub Zero though. Just so people can experience it.
Genuinely never thought this would happen.
Now it's your turn with Tekken, Namco. We have classic Street Fighter, Fatal Fury/King of Fighters, and now a classic Mortal Kombat collection. No excuse to not release a classic Tekken compilation now.
Shaolin monks, should have been included.
This may be the best klassic kollection yet
Really hope in some form or other we eventually get Gold and the PS2 games. Or in a dream scenario 9 but that one seems very unlikely.
Absolutely wild that they're including Mortal Kombat Advance in this, would think they would want to deny all knowledge of that thing ever existing.
@Rpg-lover def deserves a HD remaster. Was such a nice side game.
@Lizuka it'd be like including Sonic 1 for GBA on a Sonic collection. Why even bother?
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOO, THIS IS EVERYTHING I WANTED!!!! I've been asking for an MK Kollection for what feels like forever 😭
@Zach there's a chance it might, they said there will be more games revealed before release!
The fact that they are also including the home and handheld versions of these Mortal Kombat games with online play in addition to the arcade ones is fantastic. Now we could finally play the good and bad versions of some of these game and get some behind the scene stuff too. I had to say I'm really impress in what Digital Eclipse had done so far. The fact that it's also coming to Switch 1 & 2 is nice as well. Of course I will be getting it for Switch 1 and PC.
@DarkScythe13 It's a legacy collection, they don't care if it's good or bad, it's part of the IP's legacy and it had to be included. It's like the Capcom Fighting Collection 2, while it had all the good games, it also had the crappy Capcom Fighting Evolution as well since it's part of the Capcom fighting legacy. Even some of the Sonic collection had some of Sonic's other crappy entries on there as well such as Sonic 3D Blast (always the Genesis version) and Sonic Labyrinth, they are terrible entry but since they are part of Sonic's historical legacy they had to be included.
It’s not komplete until it’s konfirmed there will be a Physical Kopy with no required. Everything on the kart…. Please and thank you.
ABACABB
I want more ports, MK Trilogy, Gold, Mythologies, Special Forces, Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon.
FINALLY, finally it’s happening! I’ve wanted this for absolute years. Arcade versions, plus the console versions, plus the awesome documentary/archive content. All handled with total TLC by the best studio imaginable for this kind of work. And I love that more games will be revealed over time. Surely that includes MK Trilogy, Mythologies and Shaolin Monks… Honestly so freakin’ happy this has been announced!
@Mjoen We all know how this will most likely go...Switch 1 will be all on the cart, Switch 2 will be a game-key.
Of course, I hope I'm wrong but somehow I doubt that.
@Serpenterror from memory Mortal Kombat Advance was basically poor port of like UMK3 rather than specifically a bad entry. Not that the MK series has a shortage of titles, nor critically panned ones. GBA port was bad it was practically unplayable with how the U player acted - and that's in a series (again) with cheap U behaviours.
@Mjoen Knowing Digital Eclipse and how they handle the TMNT Cowabunga Collection, the Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection and the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, they will probably try to announce and include as much as they could but they also can't include everything, only the ones the copyright publisher allows. a lot of those other collections were also missing some games too, the Samurai Shodown Collection is missing Samurai Shodown RPG and Samurai Shodown VI, the TMNT Cowabunga Collection is missing one Konami TMNT game, the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection is missing Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper, and Hyper Street Fighter II. My guess is that not all home ports of some games will be included.
Nice! I always liked the MK Arcade games. I sort of fell away from it when it went console-only. It's cool to include the ports - which I played back in the day, even if they didn't stand up to the arcade versions.
@DarkScythe13 The thing is the developers need more time to polish the game and work the controls but were pressure to rush the game for the 2001 holiday deadline. With no extra time, they had to do what they could and what we got is the result. Mortal Kombat Advance could definitely be an awesome entry but the rush deadline doom it from the get-go, I don't blame Virtucraft at all, the fault goes directly to Midway. They actually had some pretty unique ideas for the game too, some of the Friendships on there were quite creative different from their Ultimate MK3/MK Trilogy counterparts. Rain had a Friendship where he used an umbrella and was pick up by the wind.
@DarkScythe13 The merciless AI is a big part of it but Advance has a ton of other issues. It's missing a ton of stages, every character only has one Fatality and their Friendship with stage fatalities also cut, Sheeva was left out like the SNES and Genesis versions, the controls are a mess, and it's just insanely glitchy and busted, with it being very crash-prone, having a lot of incorrect effects and voice clips, and just all in all is really not actually in any way a functional game.
Yes!
Plus there seems to be so many MK games/versions in here I now understand why this has taken so long to happen.
If they have the Playstation version of MK Trilogy with the loading issues removed then this will be perfection.
Will be buying this on Switch 1. Can't wait.
@Lizuka That's why the game was a rush port, more stuff could definitely be added and the game could definitely be good but Midway was greedy back then and they want the game out by holiday 2001 to compete with Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival. This gave Virtucraft little time to polish and test the port so the game end up being a complete mess.
shocked that the gba games aren't mentioned here as they are also in the collection, which makes me wonder if the 3d era mk games are here
No mortal Kombat trilogy? Not interested
@SBandy1 I'd recommend giving the GOG port of Trilogy a look sometime, it's pretty much the PS1 version without the loading and it's easily the best version of Trilogy as a result. Plus it's usually dirt cheap, they only charge $10 for it at full price and it's routinely on sale for like $4.
@MysteriousMudkip It's probably from MK1-MK Deadly Alliance. The thing is perhaps maybe one console version of Deadly Alliance is included with the GBA ports. Also one thing to note is that Deadly Alliance is the first Mortal Kombat game that doesn't had an arcade entry. The Switch will probably get the GameCube version of DA while the PS4 and PS5 will get the PS2 version and Xbox Series X and S will get the Xbox version. Reason I say that was cause the GameCube version only used Nintendo's button layout whereas the PS2 used the PlayStation layout and the Xbox version used the Xbox layout. Hopefully Digital Eclipse take that into when they include DA in the collection. Other than the controller layout differences, the game is basically the same on all platform with the Xbox version having better graphics since it's the only one at the time that 720p resolution.
@Lizuka
Cheers but I'm a console only gamer. But good to know!
Cool it's got mk4 😁👍
@Lizuka GOG was really nice to put that game on sale for $2 the last I check it. That's the only time I bought the game, I however didn't really like MK Trilogy in general cause of the missing contents that should have been included. Having a Johnny Cage who can't nut punch, a Pit II where no one can fall, a ninja Sub-Zero that can't spine ripped or deep freeze, a Goro's Lair with no creeping eyes, a Kahn's Arena with nobody chained to them, and a Scorpion that can't summon the Shirai Ryu clan fatality just isn't interesting to me. Also I hate the Aggressor meter, I thought it was a lame attempt at having a super meter but it isn't even that, it's worst than that.
@JR150 Yes and add Soul Calibur to that list too. It's a crime that only Soul Calibur II is on a Nintendo console, it's even a worst crime that we never got a remastered of the first Soul Calibur game or the first game (Soul Blade/Soul Edge) in the Soul series in general.
They must have taken a look at the Capcom collections and decided they could do even better. This is a fantastic idea.
just hope they dont screw it up after mortal kombat 1 fiasco on the switch.
Day 1 for me for sure despite the fact I own the OG arcade cabinets. Absolutely love old school MK. New MK not so much. I use to compete in many MK tournaments in the 90’s and won several of them. I had about a 2 year win streak once till one unfortunate day when I was working in the local arcade. Remind me to tell you the story sometime…
Throw sub zero mythologies in and some QOL stuff like one button fatalities and I’m definitely in. And a super easy mode. When I played the arcade 1up I couldn’t even beat two fighters. How I beat all these games as a kid is beyond me.
This is awesome and as others have stated something I've been wanting for a long time. This concept of a 'Cowabunga Collection' approach to these long standing legacy series' is genius and VERY consumer friendly.
I'm hoping the same will be done to the 90's era Star Wars games. I was all over the NES, Game Boy, and most especially the SNES Super Star Wars Trilogy. All those games were like legal crack to wee little me!
@AG_Awesome Yeah those arcade AI were super cheap and unfair but since this collection is going to include the console ports too, you may want to start with those first since those will include one button fatality and Easy mode plus some more extras. Mortal Kombat 4 in the arcade doesn't include Meat, Noob Saibot and Goro as hidden playable fighter so that version despite been the more graphical and smoother version is missing a lot of contents, you may want to start with either the N64 or PS1 port first, also the Dreamcast version if we're lucky. The same deal with Ultimate MK3, while the arcade version does had plenty of fighters, the console versions for SNES and Genesis got playable Rain and Noob Saibot and the Brutality finisher plus Motaro and Shao Kahn as bonus playable characters to unlock.
Oh. My. Goodness! This is fantastic! We put lots of hours into UMK3 on my SNES back in college.
@Serpenterror What game is missing from the TMNT Cowabunga Collection? IIRC it's mostly limited to the Konami catalogue and of the games based on the 1987 cartoon.
As for the other collections, yeah it is quite annoying that the SF 30th Anniversary Collection is missing the Japanese games in the Western release, and only a few games can be played online. Also the Samurai Shodown Neogeo Collection, it really should have dropped the Neogeo label and included SS6, particularly since it was included in the less powerful PSP version.
@PKDuckman This one, of course it's not a well known TMNT game but it's from Konami and is part of the legacy of TMNT games from the 90s. It's not a console title either so perhaps that may be why Digital Eclipse skipped on it.
@Serpenterror Oh I forgot that game ever existed haha. It was developed by a company called Distinctive Software which is now part of EA Canada, so perhaps the developers didn't want to pay EA for the game's code?
Also IIRC the first two TMNT NES games also have PC ports published by Konami. Although that DOS version of the first game has a jumping bug that made a level unfinishable.
So excited to see this finally happening! I would of been perfectly content with just the Arcade versions of MK, MKII & Ultimate MKIII, but they went the extra mega mile and then some. Day one. No brainer!
MK1 & 11 by comparison just lack the overall charm, simplicity, in and out gameplay, fun factor, personality, soul and that iconic bombastic energetic SFX & music that graced 1-3. MK rocked my world and many others back in the early 90's. You just had to be there when 1-3 took the world by storm. The series had lost it's essence by the time MK4 debuted, imo.
Switch 2 has some pretty solid Faux/New Wave Retro titles on the way. Won't be getting these on Switch 1. As far as I'm concerned, anything that releases prior to June 5, regardless of being multi-platform, especially when the game is cooking 8-16-something bits and offers zero enhancements for S2, is still Switch 1.
The Capcom Fighting Collection 2 will be the the last and final title that'll buy on Nintendo Switch, and that's it, it's a NintenWrap. The last hurrah, topped with a big back log of games i still need to tackle. eek!
Glad to see this finally coming out. I hearing about it since like 2020.
Wasn't expecting any other games besides 1-3, so that's cool.
@NeonPizza Yeah if you got the Switch 2, then even more options open to you cause Street Fighter 6 and Virtua Fighter 5 EVO are also coming to that console. I believe that rumor Tekken game is still on the way too. Bandai Namco is probably saving that announcement for EVO or that June/July Nintendo Direct.
@Serpenterror
That's true, but I'd probably just get VF6 on PS5, since I only game docked. Better graphics, resolution & whatever else. Although, I can't stand the DualSense's rubbery textured detachaed-style D-pad. That new PS5 Arcade stick that was unveiled during todays State of Play could be a very cool alternative. I may just have to double dip, because ultimately I'd much(As in, above and beyond) rather lean towards the Nintendo eco-system, like I have been since GameCube.
As far as pads go, the S2 Pro controller is shaping up to be one of the greatest controllers of all time. But it's also one of the most boring and uninspired looking pads to match. It's very none nintendo like just like the Switch 1 Pro before it, and almost looks like it crawled out of the XBOX family.
The last unique 'traditional' controller Nintendo ever created was the definitely the GameCube's. I have a bit of a soft spot for the Wii Classic controller & Classic Controller Pro too. The latter feels like a 'Super' Super Nintendo Controller if there ever was one, with that Apple-esque White gloss & Clear finish.
Great news. I thought they would never do this.
This collection needs MK Trilogy, MK Mythologies Sub-Zero and MK4 Gold
I wonder what made WB change its mind though, since they flat out refused LRG when they wanted to make the Konami Animaniacs/Tiny Toons collections.
A part of me is hoping we somehow get the 3D era games included…
Can we please get the Midway Arcade Treasures collections next? This is a lovely Kollection. Midway (Atari) were such a massive part of gaming in the 80s and 90s.
Is it Komplete without that Sub Zero N64 game?
I that being hated in the day! Probably still is!
YEESSSSSSSSSS!!
I'm definitely getting this. Some of the clunkiest, most awkward fighting games ever made but still some of my fondest memories.
I wonder if they will add move lists to the older games.
It would be cool if they added old strategy guides with all the moves in including fatalities etc.
Of course adding one button fatalities is an option too.
@PKDuckman I'm told the European version fixed the level design to make it a finishable game.
If it will get a proper physical release, then it's an instant buy.
If it is "komplete", why are MK Trilogy and MK4 Gold missing?
Glad to see this collection finally arriving. I was hoping they would have console versions as well as arcade. In particular the mega drive 32x version of MK 2.
You know what I'm gonna say: this should be released physically since day one. They did it until the Tetris Forever, Llamasoft and Karateka collections... which ended up being released physically very late. I hope they didn't take the "let's release it very late in order to sell poorly after everyone owns it digitally so we can justify stop releasing physically at all" approach and was just a problem of another nature.
So anyway, we know this is going to be touchable at some point, let's hope it's the same day as the digital release.
And it will be a great opportunity for me to enter the Mortal Kombat universe from the start. I only have modern entries.
The kompletest edition? Where are the ps2 games?
@TKundNobody They hint at more games unannounced for now. Fingers crossed.
@MirrorFate2
It’s already including games up 2003 which might just be the GBA games rather than the the console DA so there’s high likelihood it won’t be “komplete”. They could include all that and there’s a ton of ports and games people will tear into this for not having someone for example will act like not including Special Forces is horrendous and make that their hill to die on.
Finally - this should've been released years ago.
Great! And Digital Eclipse is awesome, so I'm definitely going to score this one at some point. But first I need to still get the Atari 50 one from them.
Very much looking forward to playing the original GameBoy version of the very first Mortal Kombat on a big tv!!
There are like 4 big ? in the trailer and I think they relate to MK Subzero and MK Special Forces
Since they promise over 20 versions, I hope Dreamcast MK4 Gold also makes it's way!
This is the best MK related announcement since MK9. That said the GBA games suck. Hope there will be Shaolin Monks.
Oh, I really enjoyed MK4. Might pick up for that alone
DOGMAN IS HAPPY!!! DOGMAN WILL GET THIS FOR SWITCH 1!!
I'll , the best mk ever is not in (mk9), mkda is not in... shaolin monks is not in... mka is not in... mk subzero is not in ... mk Trilogy is not in ............ "complete collection"
@Zanzox This is called a legacy collection and not a complete collection. Pushsquare was the one to call it "komplete"
So glad that it's finally happening for those interested in such a Kollection (me included) and even more so considering Digital Eclipse are the ones working on it other than of course that it's coming also to Switch 1 and 2 - looking forward to seeing what other games will be included!
I want Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero
I am so freakin stoked!!!
@AG_Awesome because you were mighty as a kid that's how
@Tempestryke True. Even test your might I could chop everything in half!!! Now I’m a weak pathetic fool 💔😢
About time! The recent Mortal Kombat's have been quite good, but just like Street Fighter, nothing tops those classics.
Only the GBA versions of Deadly Alliance is weird, I have to assume the PS2/GCN/Xbox version will also be announced in the future. Same with MK Gold and the console versions of MK4.
Not surprised Mythologies SZ, Special Forces and Shaolin Monks aren't here, but not sure what other place they'd include them in. A broader Midway Adventure games kollection perhaps? I know an MK Spin-Offs Kollection won't sell much, there aren't many of them and SM is the only worthwhile game.
Instead of making an actually good Mortal Kombat game, they bring this reheated nonsense. Truly, innovation is still dead.
I read the headline, was very excited. Been wanting these on Switch for forever.
Then I read "Digital Eclipse". Burying the lede!!! That should be in the headline! Those lovingly presented history pieces are amazing!
Code in a box for sure... Edit... Kode in a box
Is it just me who would much prefer being able to buy these games via hamster ACA? But I’ll be buying it simply because it’s the only way to get it.
