The Switch 2 is out next week and ahead of this, Nintendo has rolled out a new system firmware update for the original unit.
This bumps the hybrid device up to Version 20.1.0 and includes some visual and sound updates, along with the return of general system stability improvements. There's also a notice about system transfers – if you're planning to transfer your data to Switch 2, you'll need to update your Switch to the latest firmware.
Here's the full rundown of the Version 20.1.0 update, courtesy of Nintendo's official page:
Ver. 20.1.0 (Released May 27, 2025)
Visual updates have been made to the settings.
The sound that plays when Nintendo Switch Online is launched from the HOME Menu has been changed.
General system stability improvements to enhance the 's experience.
Note: If performing a system transfer from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2 using local communication, the Nintendo Switch console will need to be updated to this latest system version to perform the transfer. See System Transfer from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2 for more information.
This latest update follows on from Version 20.0.1 at the beginning of May, which fixed an error code issue some players were encountering after the major 20.0.0 update. Version 20.0.0 went live at the end of April and added Virtual Game Cards, GameShare features, and much more.
Nintendo has also released an update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons today. You can find out more about this in the following story:
If we hear anything else significant about this update, we'll let you know. Have you ed it yet? Tell us in the comments.

One small step for features, one large leap for stability!
Another essential update I see...
So stable and I can hear the neigh from 20 horses. 🐎
This is system version number we saw when they showned Nintendo Switch 2 option for charging up to 90%!
Are you stable yet, son?
Will this also change the NSO apps to use the Nintendo Classics branding?
The update we need, but don't deserve.
OHHHHHH YEAAHHHHH
The sweet sound of stability
I love Stability and all, but at this point, I'm ready for Stability 2.
Immediately made a point of Pepsi challenging the new NSO noise with the old one. I'm kind of mixed? It's definitely more distinctive but the sound mixing feels weird, it's like noticeably louder than the other system sound effects and has kind of a weird reverb on it.
So sustabable
"...the Nintendo Switch console will need to be updated to this latest system version to perform the transfer."
Omg they locked the transfer feature behind a mandatory update! /s
I kid sorry.
Governments around the world -> Take note from Nintendo. This is what the average constituent seeks in 2025. Stability.
If only there was stability when attempting to preorder a Switch 2!
On an unrelated note, I noticed that when games are purchased that were once on your wishlist in the eShop, FINALLY they auto-remove themselves. Way long overdue.
@MeloMan I’ve noticed that too. 😁
@MeloMan this was included in the Virtual Game Cards update on April. I agree it was long overdue.
@AccessibleDaydream not yet. I guess that will be next week when the Switch 2 launches.
Is it just me or is this update not ing at all on the screen?
How does transfering game data work between Switch 1 systems? Do you get to pick and choose or is it all or nothing? Wondering about transfering data to Switch 2 for just games I'll be playing on Switch 2.
Gotta say, I like the new Nintendo Switch Online sound. The service is currently down for maintenance however.
INSERT STABLE JOKE # 21039567 HERE!
Nintendo Switch System Update 20.1.0.
The NintendoSwitch1 [Joy-Con], can be updated, but it's only the right Joy-Con.
Edit:
Also, the NintendoSwitch1 [Nintendo Switch 1 Pro Controller], can be updated.
Looks like stability's back on the menu, boys!
Super stable stability even more stabilized.
They have also added themes...
To the NSO menu, the black theme is now ed
@speed_loafer System Transfer transfers all data, because, well it's a system transfer.
You can also just transfer data on a per game base. Or just use the NSO cloud..
Surprisingly this doesn’t mention a few things:
1. The Themes section has some renames. Basic White and Basic Black become Basic Light and Basic Dark, Nintendo probably realized this was something that should have been changed a long time ago or they just don’t want anymore confusing into thinking more themes will be added at some point. Either way this confirms no other themes are being added on Switch 1 and Switch 2.
2. The Nintendo Switch Online app has also been redesigned and has some Switch 2 UI sounds, also ing dark mode now.
Did they fix it so you don’t lose the save data of everything on your SD card yet?
I mean, after serious problems that the latest two updates have brought before, joking about stability no longer makes sense.
@sanderev No dark theme for the Nintendo eShop? Well, I will continue to use Deku Deals, then.
@MrCarlos46 Huh? I just updated and my themes still say "Basic White" and "Basic Black"
I love the smell of stability in the morning.
The new NSO app is much faster compared to before!
Also am I the only person who didn't realise until recently that the NSO "Nintendo Classics" page has videos of EVERY game available to play? Also multiple screenshots. Real shame we can't see these from within the console apps themselves.
Thanks for the heads up. There’s an update for the right Joy-Con and Pro Controller, too. It’s all getting very real now guys! Exciting.
The hype is real!!
@sanderev yeah nice, need a dark-theme e-plop asap.
@Zyph You joke, but I net there were some people trying to avoid that game stuff because it wipes all your save data from the SD card, and now they're fuuuuuuuu....
@MeloMan It always annoyed me that they didn't come off the wishlist when purchased. Glad they sorted it. Thanks for sharing.
Well, today was fun. Turned on the Switch, but it said none of my joycons were charged (even got the "Battery depleted" message pop up for both sets), despite being on the charger overnight. My had an exclamation mark next to it, but that vanished when I tried to check my settings. After 2-3 reboots, it finally offered me the system update, which I did. After it was completed, the joycons were all mysteriously shown to be fully charged. Thank heavens for stability, eh?
Funnily enough I saw the article here on Nintendo Life but didn't read it, updated before playing Fitness Boxing and now I'm back to see the contents of the update - interesting changes (even more so those mentioned here in the comments) in addition of course to the classic stability and so all the related jokes, always appreciate those!
OH MY GOD, WHAT IS HAPPENING?
Just updated - besides the new opening sound, NSO app s The Basic Dark Theme now.
You guys wanted more themes on Switch, right?😎
Mine is now so stable even during an earthquake it now stands no chance of being knocked over.
@jesse_dylan Switch Save data for games is never stored on the SD card, if you mean game data... what do you mean lose it? Stop losing your SD cards.
BE CAREFUL WITH THIS UPDATE!!!
I'VE BEEN SEEING THAT IT MESSES UP THE READING OF SD CARDS!
The whole layout of the Nintendo Switch Online app has changed Or did that change in the last update - I didn't notice then, but I didn't notice now!
Aha now its so stable that i became forward compatible with Switch 2 games.
@nhSnork Could this be considered a monkey’s paw moment where they do update themes but not how we expected?
No I'm still not stable yet!!! 😳
@Suketoudara Yeah just starting to realize this name change was only done for American English settings. Either they didn’t bother changing it for the other languages or they just forgot and are working to update the names for the other languages.
My OLED is gonna be screaming.
@MrCarlos46 I don't think they forgot as there's a big infographic about it that uses the original names too and says "Basic black theme is now ed!" on NSO Switch app.
BTW did anyone notice they've basically added coloured themes to... only the NSO app?
Come on Nintendo. stop toying with us! Proper game themes in the Nintendo Today! app, even Alarmo and now colours on the NSO Switch app? Surely some kind of themes are coming for the main menu?
@Suketoudara Maybe only Nintendo of America decided to be straightforward with themes since people keep thinking there would be more due to the original naming.
Not even sure if they also changed it for Canadian French, Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.
Grabbing new icon parts is way smoother now. Though I still wish there was a way to select multiple and confirm once.
@Stormcloudlive a lot of people updated and found their save data was gone for any game they had on the sd card. Games on the system storage were not affected. Save data in the cloud was not affected, but you need switch online service to use cloud saves.
@MeloMan That would be great! I updated and checked my wishlist, and some of my purchases have been removed, while others are as they were, grayed out and listed as purchased.
Has this happened with anyone else?
I must say, I wish these "in preparation for Switch 2" updates were OPTIONAL The whole virtual game card thing on my other Switch is a total PITA. Not planning on buying Switch 2, either.
@Blast16 not sure, maybe it's not retroactive? I just know any post update purchases I've done removes it from my wish list.
Make Switch Stable Again!
Am I going to be able to sign in to my Switch 2 with my Nintendo , but not do a System Transfer? I was planning on keeping my Switch Oled and my Switch 2, and then just transfer games between the two if I want to play them on the Switch 2 and use the Cloud Save. That will work, right? Wasn't that the point of the Virtual Game Cards?
@MeloMan Oh I see. I've not bought anything since I updated today. Thanks, I'll look out for it next time!
@speed_loafer if you are just transferring games. Either go to the eshop to re- or the virtual game card system.
@Late there was a point that you could by redeeming for a complete pf icon set. But they only did it for short time.
The last update practically bricked the console, so I'm surprised this one didn't, causing people to have to the Switch 2.
@MrCarlos46 pretty much - the concept originated in more sinister contexts but does get applied more lightheartedly to many kinds of ironically jinxed cravings online these days.
@nhSnork There was a rumor saying the Switch 2 would get themes in a later update but now I’m starting to think that rumor has been debunked. From the Switch 2 leak it still showed white and black themes but now they are actually called Basic Light Mode and Basic Dark Mode, implying Nintendo is being more straightforward to show that there won’t be more themes added.
The thing that I find funny is that for all the stability updates the system has gotten, the fastest and most stable the eshop ever was was at launch.
Yes, I know that it's mostly because it wasn't written to handle an increasing number of items in the shop so it would have gotten very unstable, anyway, without updates, but still...
